After becoming an almost immediate hit for NBC in Fall of 2006, Heroes dropped significantly in the ratings over the past couple seasons. Fans have complained about the storylines but the TV show has been one of the network’s biggest draws in the 18-49 demographic. NBC has opted to cancel it anyway.
Heroes follows a group of ordinary humans who have developed extraordinary powers that end up affecting their lives in positive and negative ways. The series’ large ensemble cast includes Adrian Pasdar, Ali Larter, Cristine Rose, Greg Grunberg, Hayden Panettiere, Jack Coleman, James Kyson Lee, Masi Oka, Milo Ventimiglia, Robert Knepper, Sendhil Ramamurthy, and Zachary Quinto.
The network had reportedly been considering three options to wrap up Heroes — a 13 episode order for mid-season, an order of four to six episodes that could be aired over a couple nights in the fall, or to just cancel the series outright.
Though Heroes still brought NBC some its better 18-49 ratings this season, the numbers just can’t justify costs with a sizable cast and special effects budget. The network has a large selection of new hour-long dramas to choose from and so, has decided to cut Heroes.
On the bright side, NBC is supposedly working on a plan to wrap up the series. Right now, it sounds like there will be a two or four hour event that will air mid-season. The details will revealed at NBC’s upfront presentation on Monday morning.
Over the past day or so, Grunberg has been tweeting and hinting that “the fat lady” was getting ready to sing. As the news broke of Heroes’ cancellation, he wrote, “I’m hearing The FAT LADY singing her ass off!!! #Heroes = Cancelled! Sad. BUT… W/bad news comes GOOD!! My Next Tweet will explain!!” Three hours later, and Grunberg still hasn’t tweeted again.
What do you think? Are you sorry to hear that Heroes has been cancelled or was it long overdue? Will you watch the wrap-up event, whenever or whatever it is?

I am upset about the cancellation!!!!! I really loved that show……
Heroes was great… kind of jumped the shark when that ugly girl and the cheerleader kissed… Blehhhh…. why do that crap? Anyways, NBC, shame on you for cancelling this show… the final event better be 4 hours long you bums.
They never kissed. They only ever held hands and hugged 😛
Maybe someone needs to open up a web site called NBC Sucks! Just when things get going some dork decides to cancel it…oh wait…they are going to start another superhero show! OOHHH GOODIE GOODIE!! Please! So you are taking saving funds by canceling one show then just moving those funds to another show…then you are going to pump more funds into the show for more special effects…then say you are going to cancel it later because it’s costing too much in special effects, casting, etc. blah blahdy blah. Sounds like insanity. You know… doing the same things over and over…… Read more »
i am devastated.
Heroes was the only show I watched on NBC since they’ve cancelled virtually every other show I watched on their network. That’s it for me .. I won’t even start watching any other NBC shows from here on out. Goodbye.
It’s no secret that it’s all about money in the long run, but who makes them the money honey? There needs to be a clause somewhere in the producer’s agreement with the networks that says, “You pull the plug, fine… but hey, you actually did have viewers that spent their time and perhaps even their well intentioned emotions on these characters that the writers put out there. We owe it to the writers, actors, staff as well as all of the VIEWERS to at least give them a decent wrap.” Although Lost had its final planned, and successfully made it… Read more »
I agree with most, bad move on NBC’s Part to put it nicely. Heroes was like the fastest hour on television. I hope NBC will conclude the show, whether they do it as a 2-3 night mini series or on the big screen, (Just an idea NBC) but don’t leave your die hard fans hanging and I am a die hard fan. never missed a show and purchased the DVD’s
Hope another network like syfi picks it up. I liked the show and wanted more. Infact I cant think o any other NBC shows that I watch. So that channel can be deleted from my favs. now. I usually watch fox and cbs anyway
I never watched HEROES, until a month ago. I saw Zachary Quinto as Mister Spock, before I saw him as Sylar…. and now I can’t watch Star Trek the same way!! i watched ALL 4 seasons on Netflix, and couldn’t stop watching. I watched the first season in 4 days, and just ran through them all in a couple weeks!! A great show, great writing, and nice back stories. It kept me interested enough to watch all four seasons so quickly! I am very sad to see that NBC canceled the series. I think too many characters was probably their… Read more »
after the writers strike the story lines did get weird but the carnival was a pretty neat addition i love heroes of all kinds but i feel that it seems like a rehash of the x men stories nuff said
Not happy about the cancellation even though the story lines were getting a bit fuzzy and too many characters being introduced. NBC should at least do us the favor of wrapping it up with a special.
NBC Sucks!! Plain and simple!! Boy cot NBC!!
NBC has a long long history of cancelling above average shows. That’s why I don’t watch anything they air till it’s available without commercials. Maybe their advertisers will get wind of that, and start taking their money to a network that isn’t comprised of lackwits. 🙂
NBC Sucks. First they shaft Conan, now they cancel Heroes? I will admit to some frustration with the 3rd season’s plot and how Claire revealed to the world that there are people with powers out there. However I also saw this as a way to refine the show. Instead of the next season being the Government hunting down super powered people, make the company investigate them. If the powered individual was a menace to society they could put them away in level 5. If they weren’t a menace to society offer them a place in the company. If they refuse… Read more »
Guys, I don’t get it You really loved Heroes?? come on…First season was awesome then season 2…was like?? ”They are getting out of the line by making it international.” In season 3 they realized it was retarded spreading story lines so they went back as season 1 but now another crap of the company…I watched until last season but in season 3 I realized it was getting so confusing that there was no sense in keep watching this.. they were getting out of the main idea…What is that with a circus in last season?? come on that became ridiculous just… Read more »
