After becoming an almost immediate hit for NBC in Fall of 2006, Heroes dropped significantly in the ratings over the past couple seasons. Fans have complained about the storylines but the TV show has been one of the network’s biggest draws in the 18-49 demographic. NBC has opted to cancel it anyway.
Heroes follows a group of ordinary humans who have developed extraordinary powers that end up affecting their lives in positive and negative ways. The series’ large ensemble cast includes Adrian Pasdar, Ali Larter, Cristine Rose, Greg Grunberg, Hayden Panettiere, Jack Coleman, James Kyson Lee, Masi Oka, Milo Ventimiglia, Robert Knepper, Sendhil Ramamurthy, and Zachary Quinto.
The network had reportedly been considering three options to wrap up Heroes — a 13 episode order for mid-season, an order of four to six episodes that could be aired over a couple nights in the fall, or to just cancel the series outright.
Though Heroes still brought NBC some its better 18-49 ratings this season, the numbers just can’t justify costs with a sizable cast and special effects budget. The network has a large selection of new hour-long dramas to choose from and so, has decided to cut Heroes.
On the bright side, NBC is supposedly working on a plan to wrap up the series. Right now, it sounds like there will be a two or four hour event that will air mid-season. The details will revealed at NBC’s upfront presentation on Monday morning.
Over the past day or so, Grunberg has been tweeting and hinting that “the fat lady” was getting ready to sing. As the news broke of Heroes’ cancellation, he wrote, “I’m hearing The FAT LADY singing her ass off!!! #Heroes = Cancelled! Sad. BUT… W/bad news comes GOOD!! My Next Tweet will explain!!” Three hours later, and Grunberg still hasn’t tweeted again.
What do you think? Are you sorry to hear that Heroes has been cancelled or was it long overdue? Will you watch the wrap-up event, whenever or whatever it is?

heroes is a fantastic show i think it stinks that your going to cancel one of the best shows on nbc. it is one of the reasons i watch nbc.
I’ll miss Heroes, was looking forward to season 5. The only show I watched on NBC was Heroes . I found it went the same way as lost… Really good first couple seasons then people started to lose interest. I think if NBC advertised the last season, for example as what happened with lost when it was ending, they will have the more viewers for the 5th season, and hopefully satisfy the die hard fans with a decent ending season.
u should end it with a 5th season…
dont cancel it
nooooo! I love Hero’s its my favorite show ever! Please dont cancel it. I think a lot of people will watch it now that it is being threatened to be cancelled. At least give it one more season!
To Hell with heroes, after season 2 the series got STUPID anyway which is what probably killed it…………BRING BACK WINDFALL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Season 3 was not that great, however season 4 was alot better. and what is Windfall?
Man this show was the best and not see what happened to the character is sad. Please have a show that give the fans what we want a big bang of a end thanks
They needed to give Peter back his original powers. I think thats what everyone was waiting for.
Cancel ‘Heroes’ idiots. Now NBC will be playing like Fox, cancelling shows and leaving viewers and extreme fans hanging in the air.
Well considering that CBS and even Fox has gotten better, I think NBC just buried themselves once again.
At least finish the series duhheads!
Josh. I totally agree. If Chuck is cancelled as well then NBC holds absolutely no interest for me. What can you say about a network that refuses to let go of Leno after he failed miserably and break a contract with Conan. I hope Heroes finds a home on another network.
If only so many people would stop watching all this silly reality nonsense suck as Jersey shore or whatever it’s called and rediscover great scripted tv shows like Heroes.
I do not believe, in this case, that the audience was too fickle. Heroes really did change their approach. The first season had many story arcs that wound into one season long story arc. You could see it unfold during the season. The second season had that same magic, but of course the writers strike messed that up. “Thank you writers.” After that the show continued with many arcs, but failed to reign them into one overall story arc. In addition, they brought in characters just to kill them off, i.e. Authur Patrelli. They also changed characters from bad to… Read more »
I meant to say that the audience was not too fickle.
The problem is that most people DVR shows now and the ratings are not accurate … They must come up with a way for them to know what people are DVRing in order for us to keep the good shows… First Life now Heroes… wow.. this stinks !!!
It’s really sad how fickle audiences are. Heroes never changes that much, in terms of it’s story lines. People were just too daft to understand its nuanced story arc, one that had a long view of things rather than an episodic view. Really, it seems the longest running series are those that have short, self-contained stories that take place in a never-changing world, like the Simpsons, where even after 20 years Maggie, Bart, Homer, Marge, & baby what’s-her-name are still the same age they’ve always been. To me, that’s just tragic because I forgot about the Simpsons after half a… Read more »
Heroes is a great show! Cancelling it would hurt NBC! Once again awesome show and NBC will lose my support anyway if the only show I watch on NBC is cancelled.
Heroes is a great series!!!! Please don’t cancel it !
I’ve been waiting to watch Heroes in the upcoming season starting in Sept., but until I looked up on NBC website for ad that said “upcoming shows 2010”, didn’t see Heroes on the list, then I decided to do a search of the show. I was very and very disappointed and upset at NBC to cancel the show entirely. My husband and I both never missed an episode of it since the beginning. I reallly liked the show very much. I think NBC should bring back the show or at least make a long ending of the show, not just… Read more »
