A little over a month after the full first season premiered, Amazon has cancelled its Jean-Claude Van Johnson TV show. Because it originally debuted as part of Amazon’s viewer-influenced pilot season, the first episode premiered back in August of 2016, but season one of Jean-Claude Van Johnson just officially kicked off on December 15, 2017.
An Amazon scripted spy comedy, Jean-Claude Van Johnson stars Jean-Claude Van Damme, Kat Foster, Moises Arias, Bar Paly, Tim Peper, Phylicia Rashad, Deren Tadlock, Winston James Francis, Filip Van Damme, and Carlo Rota. While the world knows Jean-Claude Van Damme (Van Damme) as a movie star and martial arts expert, he’s actually a secret agent — who is pulled out of retirement to face his fiercest foe — himself.
Today, Amazon also cancelled Tig Notaro’s One Mississippi and Kevin Bacon’s I Love Dick. On the upside, earlier today, they renewed The Tick for season two. Deadline reports:
Amazon is doing more clearing the decks with the cancellation of three comedy series: Tig Notaro’s One Mississippi, Jill Soloway’s I Love Dick and Jean-Claude Van Damme’s Jean-Claude Van Johnson.

“This is part of a move towards bigger, wider-audience series,” an Amazon insider told Deadline.

The cancellation for Van Damme’s Jean-Claude Van Johnson was very swift, coming only a month after the satire was released.
Amazon, which is on the hunt for big, broad drama hits, has dramatically pared down its comedy series slate, once populated heavily of quirky, underrated half-hour shows. Besides Globe-winning Transparent, Mozart in the Jungle and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and just-renewed freshman hit The Tick, all other existing comedy series have been canceled, and the streaming platform also recently opted not to pick up any of the three comedy pilots from its most recent fall pilot season.
What do you think? Have you watched the first and only season of the Jean-Claude Van Johnson TV series? Did this Amazon TV show deserve to be cancelled or renewed for a second season? Sound off, in comments.
Literally every show Beso’s dream team of dunces cancelled was extremely worthy of renewal. They have completely ignored what their viewer’s preferences are! Reeled into the first season and then leave us all hanging. LAME!
Finally ran across this show. Brilliant! And of course cancelled by some genius. Interesting choice. The Tick over JCVJ. Another excellent show bites the dust.
Surprisingly entertaining show and loved the mix of serious moments and humor.
I hope they have a change of heart in the future
and have another season. The characters were well played by all the actors. Have never really watched any Jean Claude movies, but will now.
Maybe ‘Timecop’ can pay a visit to the Executives and help influence them to continue the show.
Kick boxer and bloodsport
Gutted they disnt make a second season. This was highly entertaining show. Big mistake cancelling. But then again more of the best shows do get cancelled its crazy. The ratings on IMDB are high. Someone pick it up.
I was really enjoying Jean claude van Johnson on point comidy gutted its been cancelled i really hope this gets picked back up
Loved Jean-Claude van Johnson and One Mississippi, wish they wouldn’t cancel those. Need some more quirky comedies these days.
Great show! Mistake cancelling season 2!!
i loved it , its funny and some actions … i like it , shame they have cancelled it ..
I really wish that even after 3 years they will continue.
Seeing Jean-Claude van Damme in such a good comedy is a breath of fresh air. He played fenomenale, really didn’t expect that.
Such BS! With so much crap that is still airing, they cancelled season 2?! As the song goes, “Suck my d!ck! Suck my mothe®****£n d!ck!”
What a shame that it has been cancelled. I can’t believe it but Van Damme can Actually act……. well maybe just in this niche role. And I can assure you all that I never watch his films. In this he was fabulous. It was so original and left me with a smile. I guess in this modern world of ours it just has to be processed, packaged and bland to be suitable for all.
Well done Amazon. At least we had one series to enjoy.
The Jean Claude Van Johnson series was a breath of fresh air. Shortsighted to cancel it Netflix!
I really found this show to be a wonderful satire full of classic JCVD homages through endearing self-deprecation. When I was a boy, we did not have sleepovers without either Kickboxer, Lionheart, or Bloodsport on hand (No Retreat No Surrender, anyone?). Sorry JC…Timecop was never one of my favorites. Now Looper on the other hand, have you seen that one?? Love you, JC. Justin
I am so bummed! I love this show, so innovative and funny. JCVD has such a great sense of humor and plays deadpan so well. I was very surprised by his talent and versatility. Great supporting cast and very well written. It’s one of those unseen perfect storms, that if watched is loved. Unfortunately, it wasn’t watched enough.
too bad season 2 was cancelled. It was a great show and fresh also !
