ITV has cancelled its Jekyll and Hyde TV show, after just one season of ten episodes, leaving fans with no in-story closure. Today, creator Charlie Higson made the cancellation public on Twitter. Thus far, ITV has not commented publicly, on the status of Jekyll and Hyde.
Set in London, this 1930s period drama stars Tom Bateman as the grandson of the original Dr. Jekyll, as he tries to understand the awful legacy inherited from his grandfather. The cast also includes Donald Sumpter, Stephanie Hyam, Tom Rhys Harries, Natalie Gumede, Michael Karim, Richard E. Grant, Phil McKee, and Oliver Gilbert.
Here are some of Higson’s tweets regarding the cancellation of Jekyll and Hyde:
Sad day today as ITV announce they don’t want any more #JekyllandHyde Ah well, I tried. It was a grand adventure while it lasted.

When a fan expressed dismay, complaining the series did not get a proper ending, Higson provided grim, instant closure.

Broadcast reports the production team has been told there will be no second series (season):
Broadcast understands that the production team on the 10-part ITV Studios show have been told that there will be no second series, despite some pre-production work being done in preperation [sic] for a recommission.
Charlie Higson’s reimagining of Robert Louis Stevenson’s iconic story made an explosive start in October, attracting 4.3m (18.9%) viewers and a blaze of publicity.
The first episode generated more than 800 complaints and a flurry of headlines for depicting violence and potentially disturbing scenes ahead of the 9pm watershed.
The programme remains under investigation from Ofcom and the media regulator is expected to make a ruling early this year.
But it appears that interest in the show waned and its consolidated ratings decreased to a low of 1.8m (7.6%) for its final episode on 27 December. Overall, Jekyll and Hyde averaged 2.6m (10.8%) viewers.
What do you think? Did you like the Jekyll and Hyde TV show? Do you think it should have been cancelled, or could the ratings problem have been fixed with a scheduling change? Would you have watched a second season?
Jekyll and Hyde was such a great show, I really loved it. I’m quite disappointed they had this show cancelled, it had a lot of potential. I hope they try to make a season 2 again, or move it to Netflix.
I really liked it. The sets were amazing, so were the actors. Can’t believe you make such good tv then just dump it for trash tv.
I love the show! The walking dead is a little scarey but JEKYLL & HYDE REALLY!! Let Fox or AMC pick it up!! Im so disappionted!!
Yes season 2 please or at least finish with a tv movie to answer all the questions we have 2
.6 million viewers against 800 complaints PLEASE GIVE US A BREAK !! Do the math.
Great show…great shame it was cancelled… maybe another network could pick it up.
Why do stations always cancel the best shows!? It’s exceedingly frustrating to find a grand series, such as Jekyll and Hyde, and then have to stripped away from you without a conclusion. This was one of the best written, stylized, interesting, compelling shows on tele and these idiots have decided that it’s not of value for whatever incomprehensible reason, leaving the viewers to suffer. They’ll probably replace it with some wanted rubbish and just loose the audience J&H was able to gather and retain effortlessly with their fantastic writing, acting, directing, and outstanding special effects. Tragic. Tragic and sadly typical… Read more »
It was absolutely fantastic… Funnily enough, I preferred Hyde to Jekyll! Such a shame it ended this way!
I loved this series and for them to leave it on a cliff hanger like that and know will never know to me is very disappointing
It really is too bad. I really enjoyed this series and was waiting for it to come back on, here in Canada.
What really annoys me about new series they always end on a cliffhanger and expect automatically they are going to be renewed but aren’t. So please if a new tv series is commissioned make sure it ends correctly just in case of a cancellation and if a 2nd season is commissioned then feel free to have a series finale cliffhanger as by then the series would have an audience such as Dr Who or Star Trek. But never have a cliffhanger after just one series.
I watched Jekyll and Hyde around Christmas time and loved it, had to watch it all again! I do thick if it had a later showing time more people would have watched it. Such a cliffhanger at the end and I want to know what happens next, with just 10 episodes they can’t have cut such a good programme that short. Certain people shouldn’t have whinged about the violence in this as I’m sure there are other to programmes and a lot of movies with a lot more distressing scenes within them.
I have just watched the whole of series one from Now TV… it took me all of about 3 days! lol. I am desperate to know what would have happened in series 2…Such a cliffhanger!! 🙁
hi i’m Elizabeth, i live in new Zealand and i loved the Jekyll and Hyde. I’ve been looking forward to find out what happens in season 2 to find out that there will be no more… i am so gutted… please make more seasons.. i like the mysteries and the suspense through out the season… its the best I’ve seen.
Just crying why why was really looking forward on a second season. There most be more to it.
Probably revealing too much secret!
To Violent!??!! What? This show was absolutely amazing. I hope someone picks it up because it really was wonderful.
