This evening, FOX is airing the final episode of Lie to Me’s third season. Will the series be back for a fourth season or will it be cancelled? The answer may have a lot to do with how well the show performs tonight.
Last season, Lie to Me averaged a 2.9 rating in the all-important 18-49 demographic and 8.03 million total viewers. This season has been a different story. The series hasn’t been performing nearly as well and FOX declined to give the series an order for the back nine, leaving the season at 13 installments. That’s often a sign that the network has given up on a series and will just use up what they have left.
So far this season, Lie to Me ranks near the bottom on the list of FOX’s scripted shows, averaged a 1.9 rating in the demo and 5.75 million viewers. On January 10th, a pair of episodes averaged a 1.6 in the demo and 5.46 million viewers. Based on those numbers you could be pretty sure that the show’s fate was sealed.

But then, the next week, Lie to Me registered a 20% gain in the demo. Last week, it saw an astounding 39% gain — moving up to a 2.5 rating and 7.67 million viewers. That represents a season high for the drama. If the series can sustain that rating tonight, it could be encouraging enough for FOX execs to greenlight a fourth season.
Despite the low ratings, the producers certainly don’t feel like the network has given up on Lie to Me. In a recent interview, showrunner Alex Cary said, “Fox has been very clear with us — they know what the show is, they know what it can do. [The ratings bump] shows that people will come watch the show.”
Cary also indicated that tonight’s finale goes to the heart of Lightman and Foster and their strong emotional bond. He noted, “We’re very happy with it. We think it will make the fans only more hungry for a season four.”
What do you think? Will Lie to Me be back for season four or will it be cancelled? Will you be satisfied if this is the end?
WHEN, WHEN, WHEN will networks drop Nielsen ratings and devise an internet savvy way of evaluating a show’s profitability? Too many good shows have lost out to Nielsen ratings when fewer and fewer people care about a network’s schedule and would rather arrange their show appetite around their own schedule via Hulu or other internet access medium! I’m in my 50’s and I already know Nielsen is obsolete. You’d think network executive would be smarter than I (or maybe I need to apply for the job?)
I love “Lie to me”, where is it? This is an awesome show and I miss it. Please don’t cancel it. Whenever I have introduced someone to the show they loved it too. I’m sure the viewership would increase once people know about it and once they see it, they’ll be hooked.
The show should be cancelled. It has some good qualities, but it has always been a very mixed bag, with lots of plot silliness and weak acting. Its potential keeps getting derailed.
Cancelling this show would be a big mistake! I think it’s starting to pick up more viewers right when they are ready to give up on it. A little more adevertising like “HOUSE” wouldnt hurt too!
PLEASE don’t cancel the show! It’s great!!!
I lovvvvvve lie to me! Smart and funny. I’m sick of seeing “Charlie sheen” crud!
This show is intriguing and extremely clever, it cannot be cancelled!!!!
There is a definite reason this shows has dropped in ratings. Season 1 was interesting because it was basically a psychology class presented in a way a book never could. For people who’ve never taken psych class or people who are interested in the subject it was fascinating (which is pretty much everyone if they are honest). It however has two major flaws. The first is that Lightman isn’t likable. He stares at people like an obsessive creep. People don’t tune in to watch a creep UNLESS that creep is also humorous (even if that humor is very dark such… Read more »
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DONT CANCEL THIS! :(:(:(
I LOVE “Lie To Me”. It really will be sorely missed if canceled. I work nights so I always catch it on hulu or other websites of the like. I also want to see what they are planing on doing with the Cal, Foster relationship. And the new guy they brought in from Torres’ old neighborhood. I really hope they don’t cancel. I think Tim Roth is wonderful in this role.
Love love love this show never have seen naked woman though…But the the acting is good Dr; Lightman is hot hot hot!! and the scrips are good as is the stories…. As for the reading of facial expressions to see if someone is telling the truth..I being a mother of 5 and grandmother of 14 and great grandmother of 1..am here to tell you that definately you can tell when your child is lying by body and facial expressions.. so why not grown ups They are just big kids.. ha ha
The finest show left on TV and they talk of cancelling. I’m sorry to say that I’m not surprised, it won’t be long until there are zero quality shows left on the air. Sadly this says as much or more about the viewing public as it does about Fox or other networks.
One of the best shows on TV. DON’T CANCEL!!!
Hello,
Like most advid viewers I have grown quite fond of the show and became an advid viewer myself I wish it does stick around for a fourth season and more seasons to come, find the show to be inspiring especially for those who want to know what to look for when they feel that they might be lied to on a final not I find the story line to be interesting as are the characters involved so please KEEP it on the air
I too LOVE Lie to Me……PLease DON’T CANCEL. The only thing, however, is that it seems they tried to get ratings by showing more half naked women and thats just appauling …..families don’t want to watch that!!! But even with that it still beats out most all other shows IMO
