When The Closer TV show ended in 2012, fans of the Kyra Sedgwick crime drama could take some solace knowing that many of the characters would stick around via the Major Crimes spin-off. Soon, it will be time to say goodbye to that series as well.
TNT has announced that a seventh season renewal won’t be coming for Major Crimes. The sixth and final season will kick off on Halloween, October 31st, at 9pm (ET/PT). The two-episode series finale will air on Tuesday, January 16, 2018.
Here’s the press release from TNT:
TNT’s Hit Series Major Crimes Concludes with Sixth and Final Season Premiering on Oct. 31, at 9 p.m. (ET/PT)
Two-Episode Series Finale to air on Tuesday, Jan. 16, at 9 p.m. (ET/PT)
Television’s beloved squad of detectives will tackle their three final cases when TNT’s hit drama Major Crimes returns for its sixth and final season on Tuesday, Oct. 31, at 9 p.m. (ET/PT). The series, a spin-off of the critically-acclaimed hit, The Closer, features a stellar ensemble cast headed by two-time Oscar® nominee Mary McDonnell. Also starring are G.W. Bailey, Tony Denison, Michael Paul Chan, Raymond Cruz, Phillip P. Keene, Graham Patrick Martin, Kearran Giovanni, Jonathan Del Arco, Leonard Roberts, Jessica Meraz and Daniel di Tomasso. This season, the hugely popular crime drama marks its 100th episode milestone on Dec. 19 with the two-episode series finale airing on Tuesday, Jan. 16, at 9 p.m. (ET/PT).
“Major Crimes has successfully navigated the many challenges that arise with a spin-off; the primary mission of which is staying true to its core DNA while expanding into unique territory all its own,” said Sarah Aubrey, executive vice president of original programming for TNT. “From Brenda Leigh Johnson to Commander Sharon Raydor, the cast and crew have done a phenomenal job of creating enduring characters – many of whom are celebrating 200 episodes together this season.”
This year, the series takes a serialized turn as the squad struggles to solve mysteries and murders surrounded by complex political conflicts, attempting to sidestep controversial issues as they track down three lethal murderers. As Cmdr. Sharon Raydor grows accustomed to her new boss, Assistant Chief Leo Mason, the detectives find themselves questioning their faith in the rapidly changing priorities of the justice system and their ability to reason through difficult changes. The emotionally gripping season will treat fans to an array of milestones from celebrations of love to periods of loss. Finally, they must accept the necessity of risk, in all its different guises, as they prepare to face the increasingly undeniable return of Phillip Stroh (guest star Billy Burke).
“The whole company of Major Crimes is dedicated to making 2017-18 the best season yet,” said series creator, James Duff. “We will finish our long run on TNT with a finale worthy of our loyal viewers and their years of unstinting support.”
Since its chart-topping debut in 2012, Major Crimes has consistently ranked as one of cable’s most-watched drama series. In its most recent season and spring run on TNT, the series reached an average 7.7M viewers per episode across linear, VOD, and digital platforms.
In addition to the main cast, Major Crimes features recurring appearances by Jon Tenney as Deputy Chief of the Special Operations Bureau Fritz Howard, Ransford Doherty as Coroner’s Investigator Kendall, Kathe Mazur as DDA Andrea Hobbs, Rene Rosado as Gus Wallace, Dawnn Lewis as Patrice Provenza and Bill Brochtrup as LAPD psychologist, Dr. Joe Bowman.
Created by James Duff, Major Crimes is produced by The Shephard/Robin Company and Walking Entropy, Inc., in association with Warner Bros. Television. James Duff, Greer Shephard & Michael M. Robin, Adam Belanoff, Mike Berchem and Duppy Demetrius serve as executive producers.
What do you think? Are you a fan of the Major Crimes TV show? Is this the right time to end the series? Would you have watched season seven?
Of course I would watch another season of Major Crimes! But the way it ended last night was very touching. I love all the characters on the show and I look forward to seeing them in their future endeavors. While it is sad, nothing lasts forever. I won’t be bashing the network like some.
It has been the one show that I have looked forward to watching each week during the season. So sorry it is ending, seems all of the good programs end too soon and the less interesting keep going on endlessly. Will be a hard time slot to fill.
I would’ve kept watching. This is one of my favorite tv series.
From The Closer to Major Crimes. This has been an excellent show for ADULTS. There are not too many around. I am very sad to see it ending. The writing, acting and characters have been a joy to follow. Good luck to everyone leaving. You will be missed.
Sad to see it end, would love to see a seventh season. I think it is a wonderful series.
Best detective show on TV! Better than Law and Order, even. Terrific characters! High ratings! Humor! Original plots! I can’t think of a single thing I don’t like.
No wonder TNT cancelled it.
I am sad about this cancellation. Where will I get a great ensemble to fight crime?
Well no reason to watch TNT any longer, last good show it had other than Castle re-runs last year. I know TNT believes edgery is better. But umm….NCIS is #1 globally. Major Crimes was amazing even the teenagers and my twenty something son couldn’t wait for it. So it isn’t an problem attracting the right age group. Unfortunately due to the cancel and cramming final season into 12 episodes this is the only poorly written, filmed season. Characters have no connection. First you cancel it then you strip it of all the incredible qualities of a top drama. Too bad… Read more »
I can’t believe this GREAT show is being cancelled. Who ever decided to cancel this show needs their heads examined.
I enjoyed the challenges of solving the crimes. How they really had to look at different angles, and suspects lawyered up- it was such a learning experience how they sucked suspects in to confessing, the sneaky things they did (mostly legal). The intelligence of the gals to come up with such great ideas to close a case. Very educating and always kept me thinking. Looked forward to it. Rusty was OK- some good parts with him, but agree it got stale. Dang- Loved Kyra and took me a few shows to glom on to Mary McDonald (great and surprising idea… Read more »
Hate to see Major Crimes go, Can’t understand why its being cancelled. All adult shows go by the waist side, too bad
I don’t understand why Major Crimes is being cancelled, if it is doing well in the ratings and has such a strong following??? It makes no sense to me, and I’ve watched this show since The Closer began. Why take something off that is really good and viewers still watch faithfully? Dumb decision!
I will never understand why ANY network would cancel their highest rated show. I watched the Kyra Sedgwick show that led to Major Crimes when she left to act in other things and direct. The show is well rounded, handles episodes with sexual violence tastefully combine humor and drama with occasional sarcasm, and the entire cast is talented. The newer police or procedural dramas that even TNT is settling for are stupidly unrealistic, so.o.o.o cheesy, with the main two characters (partners) chasing each other through the episodes in a sex romp. I’m surprised they even manage to catch the bad… Read more »
I never missed any of major crimes from the first day of showing. Bith my sister and I are big fans. Please don’t cancel this shiw. Too many good ones are being cancelled and more violent ones replacing tgem.
Unlike , Ncis all characters have stayed except the lead , and we have grown to enjoy Mary very much . As other people have commented I am given up Tv except for basic local station , they keep on putting the most ridiculous programs in place of good dramas and only a few good comedy’s , in other words TV stinks and I guess this goes with the intelligence of the new generation .Dumbo the elephant had more brains than our future so called wonderful people
