Starring a pair of sitcom veterans, Melissa & Joey revolves around Mel Burke (Melissa Joan Hart) and Joe Longo (Joey Lawrence). She’s a young politico who must take in her sister’s two teenage kids (Taylor Spreitler and Nick Robinson). She hires Joe, an out-of-work commodities trader, to be the family’s new “manny” and mishaps ensue.
If the premise of Melissa & Joey seems familiar, it’s probably because it sounds a lot like Who’s the Boss?, the sitcom that ran for eight seasons on ABC. But, how will this new TV show fare? As well as its predecessor or will it be cancelled after just one season, like so many other ABC Family sitcoms?
Melissa & Joey debuted on August 17th to a 1.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 2.15 million total viewers. That marked a record for an ABC Family premiere in both total viewership and the key demo. The second half-hour performed about as well, with a 0.9 rating and 2.18 million viewers.
But, can those numbers hold up? The answer is “yes” if the second week’s numbers are any indication. In week two, the numbers held steady in the all-important demo rating. Total viewership declined a bit, to 1.92 million.
If viewership can stay at these levels, it’s a safe bet that Melissa & Joey will be renewed for a second season.
But, what do you think? Is Melissa & Joey worth watching? Would you keep it on the air or just cancel it?

I have commented on a few of these because I like sitcoms and I believe in giving them all a chance. My fear in watching anything anymore is that they will cancel without an ending. There are always a few serial killers in the bunch and I think their reason is the thrill of the kill. Power to the people. Hey watch Judge Judy. I watch, enjoy and if I don’t like it I change the channel. Hey give them a chance to grow on you like you did with your wife, husband, kids and inlaws. Were you ready to dump… Read more »
Keep It I like the show
I really like mellissa & joey. It is a refreshing change from the criminal killing evening soap-dramas and all the ridiculous reality shows that help all of us see how to hurt each others feelings. I have enjoyed having a tv show that my kids can watch with me and see that it is OK to laugh and joke and poke harmless fun without insult. I miss comedy shows like friends and seinfield. these days my family watches tons of disney channel just because they have 30 minute shows, but I am happy to finally have something to watch other… Read more »
Keep it! I think Melissa Joan Hart’s acting skills have MUCH improved since her “Sabrina” days and Joey Lawrence is great! They both have great comedic timing. I could do without the typical snotty teenage girl character… maybe have the character show her aunt some appreciation for taking her in? Other than that… like it a lot. The networks should follow suit and produce more sitcoms that are for families (it. “Family Matters” and “Step by Step” types) in addition to this one that is for an older audience. Listen up, big wigs! And try giving sitcoms a decent chance… Read more »
Geez, will someone please put this flaming pile of crap out of its misery?
KEEP IT!
Writing is awful and the acting is over done. Cancel it.
KEEP THIS SHOW IS SUPER KID FRIENDLY AND IT’S SOMETHING EVERYONE CAN ENJOY I LOVE IT AND I THINK SO WILL EVERYONE ELSE!!
Joy and Chelley are probably the same person. Stop with the yelling.
KEEP IT THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH FAMILY FRIENDLY PROGRAMS AND THIS ONE IS ADORABLE. LOVE JOEY LAWRENCE.
It may not be 1950 but what part of “teacher whose name rhymes with lunt” is family friendly?
This show is horrible. They need laugh tracks because the audience isn’t laughing at the lame jokes. If it’s a live audience, they must be laughing on the inside. It’s painfull to watch them try to set up and deliver bad jokes.
Melissa delivers a great performance, but the writing suffers and the concept is soft. Either can the current writers and hire new ones (and ditch the unnecessary character of Mel’s assistant while you’re at it!), or just put this show out of its misery.
Keep it. It is a very good show.
Keep the show!! I love it! I hate reality shows, and I’m so glad to have a proper good sitcom! It’s funny. It could use a little work but then again friends and seinfield’s first few episodes weren’t funny, and those are my favorite shows! Keep the show for sure!
I LOVE this show!!! My bf and I tune in every week. It’s entertaining. I love the dry sense of humor. But I do agree, the acting of her assistant and the kids could improve. All in all though, the chemistry is FABULOUS between Melissa and Joey and I say PLEASE DO NOT CANCEL YET ANOTHER GOOD SHOW!!! KEEP IT!!!
Good show…needs little work. BUT should KEEP! LOVE Joey! Much hotter now than in Blossom! 🙂
