At the start of the season, we wondered which new NBC medical drama had the best chance at survival — Mercy or Trauma. It was hard to decide but now, they’ve both been cancelled anyway.
Mercy follows the lives of three very different nurses at Mercy Hospital in Jersey City. The cast includes Taylor Schilling, Jaime Lee Kirchner, Michelle Trachtenberg, James Tupper, Diego Klattenhoff, Guillermo Diaz, James LeGros, James Van Der Beek, and Delroy Lindo.
The medical drama got off to a pretty poor start last September, attracting a 2.3 rating in the all-important 18-49 demographic and 8.25 million total viewers. Unfortunately, viewership fell even lower from there.
Despite the ratings, NBC ordered a full season of episodes, likely because the network needed the original programming. Though NBC’s Primetime Entertainment President Angela Bromstad said she liked the show creatively, she noted that the show’s ratings had to improve for it to survive.
The ratings didn’t improve. The most recent episode attracted only a 1.1 rating in the demo and 4.01 million viewers.
To no surprise, the Mercy TV show’s now been cancelled. The 22nd and final episode aired last Wednesday, May 12th. Unfortunately, it wasn’t intended to be a series finale and didn’t wrap up the show.
What do you think? Are you sorry to hear that Mercy won’t be back for season two? What would you have liked to have seen happen?

I think the network failed Mercy. If ratings were poor maybe they should have moved it to a different spot. So sad that it didn’t wrap, now I am left wondering how it finishes. I think NBC has total garbage for programming now. I hear funny things about 30 Rock and The Office, but have never, not once watched those shows. I guess I will just watch ABC from now on. Brothers and Sisters, the Bachelor and Bachelorette, Dancing with the Stars, Castle, Greys, and Private Practice.
I really hope that another channel picks up Mercy. Even the primetime entertainment president said she liked it creatively. The writing was great! I am very disappointed about this.
I really loved this show and watched it live faithfully the whole season…I hope at least the show could be brought back for a reduced-show second season to be able to give the fans some closure, a new network picks it up, or better yet…IS SAVED!!!
This really sucks…it was a good show far better than allot of the crap on these days.
Should have put it into a nine or ten o’clock time slot..8pm was too early for people to get sitting down for some good TV,,,
whoever did this needs to rethink it
I am crushed!!!! I am hoping that CBC, ABC or one of the cable channels will pick it up if possible. It has only been a few days and I miss Mercy already. NBC seems to care too much about ratings and not enough about good television.
Thank you, Jenna! Well put!
I am so upset about this! I stared watching on the first episode then I stopped I recently tried it again and My and my husband were hooked. NBC is really making it hard for me to watch anything on their network and to tell you the truth NBC use to be my favorite. The only show I watch on NBC is Days I use to be all NBC but I am now ABC I wonder why! I am sooooo disappointed. I really hope someone else picks up this series. I believe you should always have 2 seasons give the… Read more »
We’re so disappointed that Mercy got cancelled. Now we’re left hanging since there was quite a cliffhanger on the season finale. Could the writers at least let us know what they had in mind for season 2?
I am just sick to hear that Mercy has been canceled. The final show just left you wanting to see more!!!!!! I hope something will happen that makes NBC to return it along with Trauma too. they were two of my favorite shows, and when I couldn’t watch them I recorded them so I wouldn’t miss a show. Please bring them back………………
I’m really upset that this show was taken off. Mercy is one of the best shows out there. It’s very realistic and exciting, etc. Please bring it back. There has to be a network out there that would be willing to give this show a Season 2. Wednesday will be a bust without Mercy.
WHY!!!!!! this was the best show on TV!!!
I am very upset about this! I really liked this show and like Ashley had to DVR the show as I work at Hospice on that night and was unable to watch as it was being aired. This show was worth watching and I am very sad about the departure.
I really enjoyed Taylor Schilling. Thought the network didn’t give it time to develop.
I hope another network picks it up. It beats so much of the other crap being offered these days. The three gals are worth keeping another season.
I am very upset that Mercy got canceled. I love that show. I am really mad because they left it hanging for a season 2. It would have been nice not to leave it hanging like that if it was being canceled. I think it is BS. I think they should give it another chance. I will tell everyone I know to watch it….
This is so disappointing! This was THE only NBC show me and my friends watch, and we are all in the oh-so-important demographic. The network really needs to account for DVRs! Everyone I know at the hospital where I work watches this! What a shame NBC. Mercy please find another network just like Conan did!!!!!!!!!!!!!
