In July, production on NBC’s Parenthood was delayed due to Maura Tierney becoming ill. She eventually had to drop out of the project and Lauren Graham stepped in.
Because of the backstage issues, NBC delayed Parenthood’s Fall premiere and replaced it with a series that was scheduled for midseason, Mercy. Some wondered if having two new medical series might cause one to suffer. It turns out, Mercy and Trauma are both in critical condition.
Mercy follows the lives of three very different nurses at Mercy Hospital in Jersey City. The cast includes Taylor Schilling, Jaime Lee Kirchner, Michelle Trachtenberg, James Tupper, Diego Klattenhoff, Guillermo Diaz, James LeGros, James Van Der Beek, and Delroy Lindo.
The series got off to a mediocre start on September 23, 2009. The premiere attracted a 2.3 rating in the all-important 18-49 demographic and 8.25 million total viewers. That put the debut in fourth place for the demo and in second place for total viewers.
The second episode fell to a 2.1 rating and 7.35 million. The third installment dropped again to a 1.8 rating in the demo and 7.29 million viewers. Not good.
Though the show’s ratings could hardly be called strong, NBC gave Mercy a full season order in October. The rest of the network’s schedule was performing poorly and the order likely had most to do with the fact that NBC just needed original programming. It didn’t hurt that the series is a co-production of NBC’s corporate sister, Universal Media Studios.
Meanwhile, Trauma struggled from the very beginning and NBC pulled the plug after 13 episodes. But then, based on the need for more programming, the network ordered seven more installments. That show returns on March 8th but is a big longshot for renewal.
While Mercy was initially the better performer, the show’s ratings have now reached Trauma-like levels. The most recent episode of Mercy hit a series low with a dismal 1.4 rating in the demo and just 5.86 million viewers.
NBC’s Primetime Entertainment President Angela Bromstad recently said that she still loves the drama creatively, but she also noted that the show’s ratings need to rise for it to survive. She made that statement before Mercy fell to its most recent low.
The network has commissioned 18 pilots for the 2010-11 season and Bromstad has acknowledged that they’ll have to essentially rebuild their schedule from scratch.
With the ratings as poor as they are, it’s highly likely that Mercy will be cancelled and won’t survive to see a second year.
What do you think? Would you be sorry to see Mercy cancelled? Is it worth watching? Is there a reason that more viewers aren’t tuning in?

Please dont cancel mercy, i am a nurse and love the way the women on the show perform both in the hospital and out, they really do have some real life problems that people have and figure ways to deal with it. I love everyone on this show and it is very popular, the problem these days are the DVR’s, life is so busy we dont have time to sit and watch shows when they come on so we record and watch later, there should be a way to count that even when they are recorded.
PLEASE.PLEASE,PLEASE keep it on..
i LOVE mercy!! i would hate 2 see it go!!!
PLEASE DO NOT CANCEL THIS SHOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I like the show, Mercy! I hardly watch anything on tv because most of it’s reality and it sucks! These girls play characters that are the same age as me (30 +/-) and I thought that was cool. It’s got this quirkiness to it that made me watch it weekly. The only OTHER show I watch is Friday Night Lights and NBC has tried to dump it several times. They’re both GOOD TV!
Mercy is the best.
Please don’t cancel it!
i liked mercy and trauma too bad yall taking them off what are we to watch now? at least we should know how it ended instead of them going off like they did we should have happy endings at least instead of wondering what happened at the end
I want Mercy back!! I love the show and always looked forward to seeing it on Wednesday nights. I cant believe that NBC canceled it!! I have written a letter to Mr. Jeff Gaspin who is the Chairman of NBC and told him to please bring it back. If everyone can please send some snail mail to Mr. Jeff Gaspin, NBC/Chairman at 3000 West Alameda, Burbank, California 91523. Why is it that all of the good shows have to go?? Why cant they get rid of that new game show called “Win it to lose it”??
I agree with most ppl! The time of the programing is wrong and maybe not enough publicity to start off with.. i just happened to see the series premier by chance and stuck with it.. i love this show and i hope it see’s at least another season.. it’s a great comedy-drama show and i find that lately there’s been a lack of that on tv…
fingers crossed for a next season!
Mercy was the best show! But I think the problem was at the end, the show was on at the same time as Idol and some other big shows that may have stollen ratings. Because of my husband I had to DVR Mercy and watch it at 10pm. I bet the number of people who may have DVR’d the show is not counted as part of the ratings. I think they just need to find a new time slot and day for it. It is much better than most of the reality crap out there!
Wow, if they keep using that 18-49 demographic, NOTHING with any intelligence or substance will survive! They Need something for us to watch that is NOT a reality TV show!
MERCY IS MY FAVORITE SHOW!!!
I like it! Give it another season at least.
I love, love, love Mercy. I hate hospital shows, it’s the only one I would ever watch. I don’t watch anything else on NBC.
i love mercy and would hate to see it go. i know i dont catch it when its on but i record it and watch it later that night. I think the problem with Mercy is the day it is shown on. there are a lot of good shows on like criminal minds and modern family. You should find a good day and time slot and wath the ratings go up. Please dont take Mercy from me i will be very urt
This is a great show. But like most hour long dramas about women, it did not last. Men have control over the t.v. remote.
