Last May, CBS announced a bold move, to take their hit The Big Bang Theory off of the Monday night schedule and shift it to Thursdays, to take on NBC’s traditional night of comedy. In its place, the programmers put another show co-created by Chuck Lorre, the creator of Two and a Half Men. On paper, it sounds like a brilliant move. Now that the Mike & Molly’s premiered, how do things look?
Mike & Molly follows Officer Mike Biggs (Billy Gardell) and Molly Flynn (Melissa McCarthy), a fourth grade teacher. They meet at an Overeaters Anonymous meeting and soon fall for one another. Others in the cast are Reno Wilson, Nyambi Nyambi, Katy Mixon, and Swoosie Kurtz.
The new sitcom debuted to a 3.9 rating in the prized 18-49 demographic and 12.2 million total viewers. That was enough to tie with NBC’s The Event for second place in the demo and have the second most number of viewers.

Historically, the CBS sitcoms who get the post-Two and a Half Men timeslot have done very well. CBS has high expectations however and has ended up cancelling several sitcoms that performed okay on this night. While the sitcom has good initial numbers, it’s not a positive sign that Mike & Molly lost 20% of the lead-in’s demo audience. Last year, Big Bang Theory was building on the lead-in and frequently outperformed Men in the demo.
There was a loss of about 7% of the audience midway through the Mike & Molly first episode so its seems likely those people won’t be back next week. It remains to be seen how many people will. This is a show whose fate will likely be decided over the next several weeks. Right now, things could go either way. Some critics and viewers have wondered how long it will be before the show runs out of material.
What do you think? Is Mike & Molly worth watching? Did you find the fat jokes offensive? Would you cancel or keep it?

Such a sleazy way to poke fun at us hefty people. Get rid of this abomination fast and bring TBBT back to Mondays.
I agree with most people that it’s REALLY a fun show about people many can relate to and it did keep us laughing, BUT we wish Molly had a room mate or work buddies instead of the mom and sister. They are alittle over the top and take away from the Mike and Molly characters. So….keep the show but drop her family!
Funny show!! I have laughed out loud during each episode. The supporting cast is a bit strange, but funny too. I look forward to the Monday line-up! Good job!
I thought this show was good for the most part. I like Melissa (I was a fan of hers when she was on gilmore girls), however I think in order for this show to work they need to reamp the supporting cast. It really lacks. The sister is to much of a nut case and all. So really work on supporting cast and then I believe you will have more of a fan base
This is the best show ever..my son works nights and i taped it for him and we all love til we cry,we cant wait to see what happens next week..its good clean fun for a change…Real live people, with real situations….please keep this show!!!
I love this show and the tow main characters, but I honestly DON’T like the co-stars. Wish they could do a little remodeling of the show with a different setting. It’s nice to finally have a show about real people, not calendar models, and glad it paints an honest picture of life for those of us who are less than perfect. Also (no pun intended) a BIG PLUS for portraying an overweight man as something besides a lazy unemployed couch potato. (Although I kind of wonder how Mike managed to pass the physical tests required for becoming a cop. So… Read more »
Keep the show!! Seriously funny. I was mad because I dozed off during the last show(big mistake watching it in bed after getting up at 4:15 a.m.), so I watched it online afterwards. I love the characters!
This show is hilarious. My husband and I love it and it is hard to find a sitcom he likes. The jokes are not offensive and we laugh till we cry. Chuck Loree has another hit on his hands!!! KEEP THIS SHOW!!
Mike & Molly is refreshingly funny! It’s real & you can relate to it. They are doing great with keeping it real & honest.
Love the show – Please keep it. Good new sitcom. I can’t wait to see what they come up with next week!
Keep this show!!! My husband and I both love it!! The 10/4/2010 episode was funny. Give “NANA” more lines, she is hilarious. Great show!
Keep this show. I loved it! Finally a show with main characters who look and act like real people instead of generic plastic Barbie imitations. ( It seems to me that most other shows have interchangeable beautiful people– boring.) I haven’t seen a show this smart and funny since Roseanne. If Molly’s mom and sister characters can get beyond shallow, inane stereotypes, it’ll be the best show of the season. JJ
This is the BEST sit-com on this year! Melissa McCarthy is hillarious. I Tevo’d the episode “The First Date” episode and show it to everyone who walks into my house! Everyone in the show plays off one another – PERFECTION!!! YOU MUST KEEP THIS SHOW GOING!
HOW REFRESHING!!! My husband and I LOVE this show! We have laughed our butts off with each episode we’ve seen, it’s just an honest, really life, funny show! We look forward to it seeing it every week! It’s not offensive at all…….you gotta keep this one!
We love it!!! It keeps us laughing! We’ve loved Melissa McCarthy from Gilmore Girls and are glad that she is back on tv! We really enjoy this comedy and hope it stays around for many seasons to come!
I think this is a great show, not at all offensive to fat people. It’s no different than making fun of Charlie for being a drunk, Alan for being a freeloader and Jake as stupid. People need to loosen up and just take it for what it is, a joke done by fat people about themselves. I laughed until my sides hurt, I’m fat and found most of it to be exactly how I feel and act.
