Mike & Molly will end its run on CBS during the second half of this television season. With a 13-episode order for season six, fans will not see a seventh season.
Fans were shocked by the news of the comedy’s cancellation. The show is a fan favorite, but there are new details about the reasons behind Mike & Molly’s quick cancellation before the series even premieres season six on CBS.
Ken Levine, a veteran sitcom writer, went to his blog to share his thoughts on the cancellation of Mike & Molly recently, and he laid the facts of the situation out on the virtual television table.
He said:
MIKE & MOLLY has performed reasonably well wherever CBS has put it. And its star, Melissa McCarthy has become a legitimate movie star. You would think for that reason alone CBS would be thrilled. They’ve captured lightening in a bottle. And yet, in fairness, it’s not like McCarthy’s rise to stardom has kicked MIKE & MOLLY to a new level of popularity. It hasn’t. Neither did THE OFFICE’S ratings suddenly skyrocket when Steve Carell got hot in films.
A big consideration is economics, especially in MIKE & MOLLY’S case. Everyone initially signs a six-year deal. The six years will be up this season. This is when having a movie star as your lead becomes not such a good thing. License fees (how much the network will pay for each episode) are usually determined in advance and then putting together your cast and production crew is like an NBA franchise building a team under the salary cap. Sometimes the costs are just too prohibitive.
And still another factor – MIKE & MOLLY is not owned by CBS. It’s a Warner Brothers show. CBS has nothing to gain longterm by MIKE & MOLLY’S success. So it’s now the ugly stepchild with a foot missing.
Fans of Mike & Molly and the cast were definitely surprised by CBS pulling the plug on this series. Would you want to see this show find new life on another network? Tell us what you think.
I would watch this show wherever it goes!
I look forward to seeing the show, but certain main characters aren’t highlighted any more. For example; Carl’s grandmother ‘ Nana’ and Vince. And what about the relationship with Victoria and Carl, even the part where Mike & Molly might have a child, everything seemed to die down.
I would definitely go to another Network to watch Mike and Molly it was one of my favorites and one of the things that I look forward to watching during the week I’m saddened and shocked that it’s gone and I miss it terribly bring it back to another station if nothing else these actors are worth what they’re getting with all the other garbage on TV it’s the only show I really look forward to watching every week
Yes please I love the show. I think it is the funniest sitcom out there.
Yes. Pllease find another network for the Mike and Molly. II love that show. Every character is funny and amazing and add to the shows success much like Seinfeld. The writers are fantastic. Please please do not cancel Mike and Molly or please find another network for it.
One of the funniest shows on tv. So many of us loved this show and all of the cast. Bring it back there is a place for this show . There are not enough great shows like this one. To many really bad shows on tv. This was a winner all around.
Please find another network for Mike & Molly. I watch it every day in reruns and make my husband watch it with me just so we can crack-up together. This comedy is a gift to me. I’m so saddened that I may not see these characters again and hear the apropos hysterical dialog .It will be a huge loss for network tv and for me.Please find another network.
CBS is interested in two things & it’s not “MIKE & MOLLY”. 1.) MONEY. Since CBS doesn’t own the show, they won’t see any Residuals & have no monetary interest. 2.) DEMOGRAPHICS. CBS wants to “appeal to a younger demographic”. “MIKE & MOLLY” appeals to ALL demographics! It’s witty, charming, funny w/a diverse Cast of Characters! Chuck Lorre, call TNT or TBS!!
WE LOVE “MIKE & MOLLY”! XO
I agree with Antionette below get rid of Elementary and Super girl. Elementary is boring and I wouldn’t watch Super girl!! Mike & Molly is a very funny and enjoyable show, never boring and worth watching. Why doesn’t CBS buy Mike & Molly from Warner Bros. problem solved!!
While I did envision “MIke & Molly” having a six-season run, I did not expect any of those seasons to be abbreviated, especially the last season. Shortening seasons are a good way to screw over a god TV show. But the thing is, “Mike & Molly” is a second-tier show, and second-tier shows are usually going to run for just five or six seasons, anyway, compared to the eight-plus seasons that the top-tier shows (like “The Big Bang Theory” and “Two and a Half Men”) are going to have.
if you have to put it on another network but don’t cancel this series
Get rid of Supergirl and Elementary, gives CBS two hours open for Mike and Molly and anything else worth watching. CBS canceling Mike and Molly, not good. I hope another network picks the show up, before the cast scatters.
CBS, is losing it’s most watch network status. If they think dumb shows like Supergirl and Elementary helps their ratings, sadly mistaken. I’d rather see Two Broke Girls go away and keep Mike and Molly.
Have never missed an episode and would love to see Mike & Molly picked up by another network. Not Netflix or any of the other format not available on TV, however. This show makes me laugh out loud every episode. And, I too have been watching every re-run I can find. This program is well worth saving. Please, please bring it back to life.
I certainly hope tha Mike and Molly gets picked up by another network. It is one of the funniest, well written sitcoms on tv. The cast is superb and they work so well together. It is truly a wonderful ensemble. There are so many horrible shows on tv and the fact that a really good and intelligent comedy show gets canned proves why television has become a vast wasteland.
