Last week, FOX debuted a new game show for the holiday week called Million Dollar Money Drop. Is it a good investment for the network? Will it stick around or be cancelled?
On Million Dollar Money Drop, host Kevin Pollak starts out the game by handing over $1 million to a pair of contestants. To keep it all, they must answer seven multiple choice questions correctly. The couple can distribute their cash on more than one answer but must use it all. They lose whatever cash they put on incorrect answers and must watch as it drops out of sight through trap doors. The contestants get to keep however much cash, if any, they have after answering all seven questions.
The game show debuted last Monday to a 1.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 5.31 million total viewers. It ranked in third place for the 8pm timeslot. The second episode aired at 9pm to a 2.0 rating and 5.33 million, still in third place. On Tuesday at 8pm, the third installment registered a 2.2 rating and 7.04 million. At 9pm, opposite all repeats, it dropped down to a 2.0 rating and 5.57 million viewers. On Wednesday, Money Drop fell to a 1.6 rating in the demo and 4.79 million total viewers. Thursday’s installment, per fast affiliate ratings, fell again to a 1.3 rating and 4.54 million viewers.
So far, the show has averaged a 1.8 rating and 5.43 million viewers. That’s not great but its not too bad either. The competition wasn’t as tough last week but there were also a lot fewer people watching network television. On the positive side, Money Drop’s season average is almost as good as Fringe and Lie to Me and is much less expensive to produce than they are.
It’s unclear how many unaired episodes are left but has several more scheduled throughout the month of January. If the ratings for these installments are solid, it’s a safe bet that FOX will order more. At the very least, it could be a solid utility player and fill timeslots as needed.
A sidenote: If you’ve been following the news, you know that an answer from one of last Monday’s shows has been disputed. As a result, contestants Gabe Okoye and Brittany Mayti have been invited to play the game again on a future episode. Presumably, for them to do that, the show will have to go back into production. The pair have yet to agree to return to the game.
What do you think? Is Million Dollar Money Drop worth watching? Would you keep it or cancel it?

I did enjoy the show with my family especially during the holidays. My concern is with the negative question that was asked on Tuesday,Jan 11th. Why was there a need to have a negative question about who is hated more ? Why was there a need to ask about who hates who the most? WHY ? My family and I all feel that in our world we are to build people up and not continue to spew hatred ! Why was that necessary ? If your staff members have run out of good questions we have many family members ready… Read more »
I love the show but on the 7th question to guest should be able to split there money and not have the opportunity to lose it all. Losing it all after the 7th question is totally unacceptable. They get no money for their time and efforts. NOT FAIR, it makes the show appears to be a reap off.
The problem with this and other primetime game shows is how complicated it is to win. Did any contestant win anything? I don’t know because I didn’t watch all of the episodes. Different people can make it to the same spot no matter what the money they have with them and then lose everything on the final question. You don’t get any bonuses and can lose everything at any given point. Other contestants didn’t fare as well either. I think that they should find a better game show.
I love the show i hope fox keeps the show rolling! i would love to be on this show!
I disappointed for stopping that like this!!!!!!!!!! it was amazing!
If I am correct, the question was ‘do we think this show should be kept on’. The others who are upset about the couple, just chill. For goodness sake, it is straightened out. Guess you never made a mistake and had to correct it??? I know my vote is but one. Well, actually, it is SEVEN counting my entire household. I vote to KEEP THIS SHOW..You have to realize it does take people a bit to find some shows with so much to offer. I watched every show because it was fun. It was certainly more exciting than Jeopardy that… Read more »
Boycott until they give them the money is what I am going
to do. If they decide to give them the money I feel that their
ratings will skyrocket by doing the right thing. If they don’t give
them the money Just consider how much they pay the emcee Kevin
Pollok and “Money Drop” executive producer Jeff Apploff. How much
do they get paid by their advertisers?
I never watched the show but until I heard about the couple that guessed the right answer to the question what was invinted first: post-its the walkman and something else, before I found out the answer I guessed post-its as well. They were offered a “do-over” after the research team discovered they were wrong…the RIGHT thing to do is give them the money that they won no more no less fair is supposed to be fair. I gonna TWEET AND FACE BOOK all of my friends and family NOT to watch this show until the RIGHT thing is done. It… Read more »
Mr. R.L. Orange,
Do you not realize that the couple would have lost the money on the last question either way? So whether they had $880,000 going into the last question or $20,000 it would not have matter. Because this is a game show where you can’t stop along the way, and that you have to risk all of your money on the last question, it really doesn’t matter. THEY WOULD HAVE LOST ALL OF THERE MONEY ANWAYS, regardless of how much they lost on that question! Time to face reality!!!!
Why are you yelling, mr R.L.? It’s just a TV show, and a stupid game show at that. Do you really think anyone especially Fox, cares, if YOU never watch it again? Reality check…..
You may not think it matters but if ratings fall the show will cancel…IT DOES MATTER!!
Keep it!
