Earlier this year, ABC introduced a thriller series called The River. It wasn’t a ratings success and will surely be cancelled later this month. Now, the network is trying an action show called Missing. Will this one fare any differently?
Missing follows Becca Winstone (Ashley Judd), a former CIA operative who’s made a new life for her herself as a single mother and a florist. She agrees to let her son Michael (Nick Eversman) study abroad but, a few weeks into his trip, he disappears and she suspects foul play. Becca arrives in Rome and begins piecing together the clues and it isn’t long before the kidnappers realize they’ve picked a fight with the wrong woman. The cast also includes Cliff Curtis, Tereza Voriskova, Adriano Giannini, and Sean Bean.
The series debuted on March 15th and attracted a 2.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 10.6 million total viewers. That wasn’t a bad performance considering that Missing was airing opposite American Idol and the hyped return on NBC’s Community. CBS was airing a low-rated NCAA Basketball game instead of their usual sitcoms.
In week two, Missing dropped a whopping 24% in the demo and dropped to fourth place in the timeslot (beaten by Idol, Community, and more basketball) with a 1.6 rating and 8.81 million. In week three, the demo dropped another 6% and the show remained in fourth place.
Over the course of this season, Missing’s ratings have slowly dwindled further downward. In fact, the show’s demo numbers have never risen.

Last night’s installment of Missing dropped another 14%, to a new series low, with a 1.2 in the demo and 6.32 million total viewers. It’s demo rating was tied for fourth place in the timeslot — with The CW’s Vampire Diaries.
When a series on a major network ties (or is beaten) by something airing on The CW, you know there’s a major problem.
Missing is currently ranked 21st out of 22 scripted ABC shows this season. It currently has a “D” grade on our ABC Ratings Report Card and is only outperforming Charlie’s Angels average — that was the remake that occupied the same timeslot and was cancelled last November.
Though ABC hasn’t said as much, there’s no chance that Missing will be renewed for a second season. The ratings are just too low — and they keep going lower.
On the positive side, there are only two episodes left in the season so it seems very likely that the network will let them both air before cancelling the show.
But, what do you think? Are you enjoying Missing? Is it worth renewing or should it have been cancelled awhile ago?

I love this show I have DVR so I was able to record it and Idolat the same time.It is by far best show on TV in a long time. Bring on Season 2.
Everytime I get into a really good show, it gets cancelled, i.e. Studio 7 on the Sunset Strip. This is my favortie show, very exciting and unpredictable. Are you kidding? There are so many lousy shows on ABC and they cancel this one.
PLEASE……. NO MORE REALITY SHOWS. Missing is the best new show on this season. Just as exciting as “24” was. Most people are just now getting into it but boy are they addicted. My group meets every week at happy hour to discuss and catch up. We Love this show.
They need to continue with another season, they definitely intended on airing the second season, but when the network changed the time and day to thursday at 8 pm, the show lost all of the ratings! If they put the show back on wednesday nights at 10 pm (the original time) then the ratings will be up again!
I love missing. It can’t be over it’s so good! I can’t believe it got low ratings, it’s the best show I’ve seen in years.
No WAY! How can they cancel this show?! I personally think it has a great plot and great characters. I’ll be honest at first I was a little impatient that the son was still not found however, I do feel that every episode added to the drama/ mystery very well. I will be very upset if they cancel this show! ESPECIALLY after watching the latest episode! Please do not cancel this SHOW!!!!
This is the only show that I make time to watch! Love the story line and twists. Of course when it’s up against American Idol and basketball it’s ratings are not going to be high. I, for one, stopped watching Idol and watched Missing instead. Even my 11-year-old son watches it with me. It is my favorite show and it should stay on for another seasong. Maybe another day and time would be better. Keep it on!!
They can’t cancle missing it’s one of the best shows ABC’s had
I have really enjoyed watching Missing this spring. There are no other shows I watch on ABC so if it’s canceled I doubt If I’ll be watching anything else on their network.
Here in canada we absolutely love and adore the show Missing. I am very disappointed that the network would even consider cancelling it instead of looking for another time slot. To be truthful, I am sick of seeing most of the networks concentrating on those godforsaken shows like American Idol and the X factor just to name a couple. Finally theres a show that has an amazing story line and its not even give a second chance. Maybe beside the time slot they could try starting it at the beginning of a season and not towards the end when other… Read more »
This is the most awsome show. And to not be renewed with such a cliffhangr would be very unfortunate. I want this show back for a second season.
also, why would debut a BRAND NEW show up against college basketball??? March was terrible time to debut this new show with March madness…
I think Missing should be a keeper! It is an awesome show. I think you should find a different time-slot. The show didn’t start until the middle of Marchave and put it up against American Idol that was in the middle of the season already, you won’t have people switching to a tv show while they are in a middle of a show. Give Missing a chance and put it at a different time slot in September.
I can’t wait week to week to see what happens next….Don’t Cancel….
We all love watching Missing. My family of seven all watch the show. Maybe if this new show wasn’t given a time slot which put it up against favorites such as American Idol, it would have had a better chance. I feel it was for that reason that more people didn’t watch Missing and if they would have I am sure they would have loved it too. In my opinion, Missing is a well written show that is fast paced and exciting to watch and always leaves you wanting more. There were so many surprise twists it always kept you… Read more »
