Last we reported, Felicia Day had been cast as the new Mad for the Mystery Science Theater 3000 revival. Now, it’s been revealed that Patton Oswalt will be joining the reboot as the new Evil Henchman.
Or rather, he’ll be playing TV’s Son of TV’s Frank, the son of former henchman TV’s Frank, played by Frank Conniff in the original series.
Oswalt is the latest to join series creator Joel Hodgson’s revival of the cult show. A few weeks ago, he created a Kickstarter account to crowd fund the new series and within six days, the campaign reached its $2 million goal. Currently, Hodgson’s raised more than $3 million.
He says that if they can reach $5.5 million by the time the campaign ends in nine days, they can make 12 full episodes of the new series. As of now, there will be at least six new episodes.
So far, comedian Jonah Ray has been cast as the new host, with Baron Vaughn and Hampton Yaunt as the new voices of robot sidekicks Tom Servo and Crow.
Hodgson, on casting Oswalt:
You know, the funny thing is that when we launched our Kickstarter, I hadn’t even approached Patton about being on MST3K… but I had thought a lot about getting him involved. … Anyway, even though we won’t start working on contracts until after the Kickstarter ends, it seems pretty safe to say that Patton will be on board with us, on camera AND as a special guest writer too!”
What do you think? Are you a fan of Mystery Science Theater 3000? What do you think of Oswalt’s casting? Will you be watching the reboot?
