At the recent upfronts, it was announced that CBS was cancelling The New Adventures of Old Christine after five years on the air.
Starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus, the sitcom has been in danger of being cancelled each year and, on a few occasions, ABC expressed interest in taking it over. Though it’s looking doubtful that the alphabet network will indeed save it, discussions are still ongoing.
Kari Lizer, Old Chrisine’s creator, says that the cancellation didn’t surprise her, especially considering the fact that the show was taken out of the Monday night block of sitcoms and has been put on hiatus many times during its run.
She recently told TV Guide, “As far as what happened at CBS, we’ve suffered from a serious lack of support from them since the beginning… I hate to say it, but I’m afraid they don’t care much for the female-of-a-certain-age point of view over there. How else do you explain them squandering the talents of Julia [Louis-Dreyfus] and Wanda [Sykes]?”
The cancellation news came at a particularly bad time for Sykes. Her Saturday night talk series, The Wanda Sykes Show, was also cancelled by FOX. Lizer expects Sykes to bounce back though, noting, “She’s never funnier than when she’s pissed off.”
What do you think? Is CBS’ treatment of Old Christine some kind of sexism or just due to poor ratings?

So many shows are on the air for that 18 to 32 year old male audience. A clue: the deadbeat gets his spending money from not having to pay rent for living in his mother’s basement. We toss him out and there will be a lot less extra cash for beer. Give us back our show that makes us pee with laughter. We need and deserve it, damn it. Don’t make me come up there.
Are you saying Old Christine wasn’t for the 18 to 32 year old male audience? Please! That’s the only demographic that was ever watching. College guys tuned in to drool over Julia Louis-Dreyfus! I would love if they toned down Julia’s flaunting of her T&A and focus more on comedy that appeals to women.
I agree. The writers never missed an opportunity to get Julia in a bra or have her massive cleavage hanging out. The whole “MILF” craze thats happening now made this the #1 show for men 18 to 30.
This is one of the funniest shows I have ever seen. America clearly does not value good humor.
Uh….what Jersery Shore is good TV? NOT! Unbelieveable that decent, funny shows get cancelled but crap like Skins gets aired. Or I Used to be Fat….who cares! Like we need another cop/lawyer/coroner show….please. Good, funny shows are hard to come by. This one should be left alone. But that’s just my humble opinion.
Christine was the best thing since I Love Lucy
“Old Christine” starts my day off every morning at 4:45 a.m. While getting on the treadmill that early isn’t always the easiest thing to do, the show really starts my day off on the right foot! For crying out loud, she won the Emmy as outstanding lead actress for the show in ’06….doesn’t that say something about the show?! Very clever writing, great cast, laugh out loud situations. Politics, schmolitics….not sure that’s the reason, but if it is, then most of the other shows need to go as well! It’s just too bad….at least we have the reruns.
I will never understand these major stations. They take the best, and funniest shows off for those stupid, ridiculous reality shows. I think the show was excellent, I watch the reruns all the time and laugh everytime even though I have seen them a dozen times.
they should bring it back. I for one am in a republican family BUT we don’t care about the liberal talk. It’s funny because they sometimes take a wack at the liberals anyway. Those girls have talent and the cast is hilarious and cute. The show was funny because its real. The way Old Christine always got unlucky….that’s the real world. those sort of things really happen
Are you kidding me?! This was the closest thing we had to reconnecting with the Seinfeld era. Its a shame that something as smart and funny as “Christine” does not fit the right economic demographic of non taxpayers.
its sad when a network lets the good shows go and leaves the gitchie made for ediots shows on. Im a republican too and if you other republicans cant just have fun and watch a show then pull the stick out of you know where and relax
PLEASE bring this show back. I love ALL the characters and cry myself to sleep having to watch dumbasses like Frasier, who I used to like till Christines showed up, being the funniest show EVER! I love you cast!
Please bring the show back, it’s one of the funniest shows since Seinfeld!!! I watch the reruns over and over and over. I hope some network will pick it up. Awesome cast, it is such a shame.
You dropped the show for that sorry line up so sick of really good shows getting cancelled and yet replaced for shows that I can’t imagine any one with a right mind watching this reminds me of why people hate t.v now a days ..I could watch the new adventures of old c. With friends by my self drunk sober whatever! Haha..& That’s rare with most t.v shows now a days… it was a feel good show that was addictive from day one and that will be missed and and dammit does it deserve another shot and an ending ….
Yes bring it back!!!!!! Idiots!!…. who cares a good show is a good show some network out there please pick this up again its sad when awesome shows get dropped like this…..
PLEASE RECONSIDER! I have my friends watch the reruns and we like to see where this is going. The show held up then most of your shotty schedule. HELP THIS SHOW PLEASE
I for one wrote CBS and told them I would never watch this show again as long as Wanda Sykes was on it. (After her rant at the Presidential dinner hoping that people that don’t agree with her get cancer and die.) I’m sick and tired of these celebrities ramming their political views down my throat. I know a lot of people who quit watching it because of the same reason. More so than the network will ever admit. Sorry to disappoint you Hollywood, but there are a lot of us EVIL REPUBLICANS out there.
