In 2009, both Southland and Medium were cancelled by NBC but were then saved by other networks. Three long-running shows were recently cancelled last month and it looked like each had a good shot of being saved as well.
A couple weeks later, Law & Order and Ghost Whisperer have been denied a second chance and now, The New Adventures of Old Christine has as well.
The New Adventures of Old Christine follows a neurotic single mom (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) who has a hard time juggling a relationship with responsibilities at home and work. Others in the cast include Hamish Linklater, Wanda Sykes, Trevor Gagnon, Clark Gregg, Emily Rutherfurd, Tricia O’Kelley, and Alex Kapp Horner.
The sitcom has been a moderate performer for CBS from the beginning and has ended up on the bubble each year. For the past two years, ABC has been ready to pick up the show if CBS dropped it. Those were in the days when ABC wasn’t having much luck finding successful sitcoms of their own.
When CBS cancelled Old Christine this year, the alphabet network wasn’t as interested anymore because ABC already has some successful sitcoms with several new ones waiting in the wings.
This season, Old Christine aired opposite ABC sitcoms and didn’t fare very well. As a result, the network has decided not to pick up the Julia Louis-Dreyfus sitcom for season six.
The final episode of The New Adventures of Old Christine aired on May 12th on CBS. After five seasons and 88 episodes, there won’t be a final episode to wrap up the series.
On the positive side, reruns will begin airing on Lifetime and on local stations across the country in the fall.
What do you think? Should ABC have picked up Old Christine for season six? How would you have ended the show?

I’ve been waiting for the new season of OLD CHRISTINE and have been patient while I have the reruns to watch. Then I decided to look for the new season start date and was SHOCKED to see that it was cancelled!!!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME! This show IS funny, witty, laugh out loud. What is wrong with TV executives anyway. Oh yeah, reality TV, it’s cheap, and I guess that’s what’s important. Remember when ENTERTAINMENT was important for the audience. Not anymore.
This was one of my favorite shows : (
Please bring it back! I need it!!!!!
One of the wittiest shows written in the last decade. Up there with arrested development. Another well written and casted show. I’d rather chuck the tv out the window than be forced to watch ‘reality’ tv. What the heck does that mean anyway? What is realistic about scripted life? I’d rather watch people who are trained in entertainment than a bunch of idiots looking for their 15 minutes.
I think the show sucked
Successful shows do not get cancelled. This show was at times funny but, aside from Christine, I was not very fond of the characters. I would watch it if there wasn’t anything else on.
I just realized this show exists and I’m addicted. I may buy all 5 seasons because I don’t have time to watch the show during the hours that it comes on. I wish it came on in the daytime. I work at night. I think many people who find this show exciting and light hearted in the sense I do are probably night people. The neurotic behaviours are easy to identify with. It’s fun. It makes me walk around all day with a smile. I didn’t know the show exisited thill I saw her on a talk show talking about… Read more »
New Christine is a fantastic show that is smartly written and appeals to an audience who is tired of cookie cutter couple comedies. Julia Louis Dreyfus id a fantastic actor and I am very disappointed that it is off the air. It is too bad that the networks can’t put anything on TV that doesn’t market to the 20 somethings. Kay Campbell
We love New Christine! It is a great show and should come back. I don’t understand why good shows like this get cancelled. It’s just like Carpoolers. That show was hilarious and got cancelled. Makes no sense at all.
Finally, a good sitcom and they take it away. The hilarious lack of boundaries, real life situations, the two other mothers…there too many funny things about this show to list. A smart, real and honest look at a single woman’s life. PLEASE bring it back.
This show was extremely funny. There are so many HORRIBLE sitcoms these days why take off one that was actually good… AND FUNNY. The characters were real and so many people could relate to them. BRING IT BACK PLEASE!
Are You Serious??? WTF? Seems like Reality Shows
keep ruining Prime Time!! BRING BACK CHRISTINE!!
Are you kidding me? I have been waiting for the return of the show/ How can you just leave people without an ending? Now that it is on Lifetime and there are re-runs people are going to wonder what the heck happened? You aren’t hearing the people and you obviously don’t care, BRING IT BACK. At least show a little about what happens with the new baby!
Please, please bring back Old Christine. I am a single mom, also. What a riot to sit down and just laugh out loud after a long day at work. Plus, I love each and every actor on the show. What a perfect match up. Find the right slot and you’ll have a winner. PS. I don’t normally watch TV, I don’t have the time. But I actually look for Old Christine!
I didn’t know much about this show until this fall when the re-runs started. Please, bring this show back, I think you will have an even better following. People are right, we need a show back on the air that makes us laugh and isn’t either a crime drama or reality TV. I am begging you…this is a show that I now watch every day, twice a day. I would love to see more weekly episodes. This is coming from someone who isn’t dedicated to any show, but this show I love!!!! Give us back our Old Christine!!!
