At today’s Television Critics Association presentation in Beverly Hills, FX’s president surprised many by announcing that the popular Nip/Tuck series had been cancelled. On the positive side, there are still quite a few new episodes on the way.
Nip/Tuck premiered back on July 22, 2003 and tells the story of two plastic surgeons, Sean McNamara (Dylan Walsh) and Christian Troy (Julian McMahon). The series mixes drama with satire and irreverent humor as the doctors take on often strange cases. Nip/Tuck was initially set in Miami, Florida but the characters moved to Los Angeles at the start of the current season, the show’s fifth. The series was recently praised by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) for its ongoing use of homosexual characters.
Today, FX president/GM John Landgraf told reporters that the network had ordered 19 episodes for the drama’s sixth, and final, season. That order’s a few less than a traditional TV season but it will bring the series’ installment total to 100 episodes. Series creator Ryan Murphy will stay on board until the end as the showrunner.

When asked about the cancellation, Landgraf noted that he felt it was time and doubted that any FX show would surpass 100 episodes. He said, “If you tried to do 150 episodes of The Sopranos, you would begin to diminish the quality of those shows. The David Chases (The Sopranos) and Shawn Ryans (The Shield), they’re taking on social commentary and grand sweeping questions. If we want to go after that brass ring, we have to accept they have limited shelf life.”
Though the move may be a disappointment to devoted fans of the plastic surgeon series, casual fans won’t realize the show has been axed for some time. There are actually 27 new episodes yet to come. Only 14 episodes of the fifth season have aired thus far with the remaining eight scheduled to begin airing in January. The sixth season is expected to begin running in 2010 and not finish airing until early 2011. Stay tuned!
What a shame. NIP/TUCK has brought tv watching to new places. Funny, dramatic, bizarre, all together! I will miss McNamara/Troy, their ordeals, their families, their clients…
I hope FX reconsiders it decision and brings more and more often Dr. Troy and Dr. McNamara to our screens.
I love nip/tuck, its one of the few shows (lost, ghost whisperer, and heroes.)I look forward to watching every season. And it’s a real shame that someone is canceling it. FX really needs to stop and think about its decision! There are going to be a lot of angry viewers and they are going to lose those viewers because of this decision, including me!
Cancelling Nip/Tuck is a huge mistake. It would easily run to 200 episodes without its glitter fading.
FX is making a huge mistake, likely from the pressure of people who know neither how to change the channel, nor set their parental controls. This is mature content of the best caliber, and its loss will cost them millions of viewers.
At least we have 1 more season left….

Plese do not cancel Nip/Tuck, it is the only well written show around right now. Regular tv shows are dumbed down for the average viewer, who’s IQ must be below 70. Please save us from more sitcoms and reality tv.
This sucks! This is total BS!! Nip/Tuck is the ONLY show I watch on FX and they have canelled it? Come ON!! With so much fodder on television, i.e., any and all reality shows, this is the only one worth watching, except old reruns of Seinfield, Frasier and the wonderful Mad Men on AMC. Who is the new guy who is supposed to take Troy’s place? He looks like a putz. He CANNOT be his replacement! WTF FX????!!!!
this is so stupid!!!!!!!!! this is FX’s biggest show idk what they are thinking fans are going to be angry!!!!
I think canceling the show is stupid on FX’s part. What are they thinking?! That show put them on the radar.
I have been a regular watcher of Nip\Tuck & Rescue Me since both series started, even have all seasons on DVD. To cancel a show so popular with its viewers is outragous, why can’t you want until the viewers give you a reason to get rid of it. Now that NIp\Tuck is getting back to its old habits, you decide to cancel it, why? If you continue to run crappy shows you will lose all of your audience. I used to belive that FX was my favorite channel, and I even traded to Direct TV because they offer it in… Read more »
that really blows balls that dick is cancelling the best show on FX. now i gues i wont watch the FX channel any more just cause of that.watch that sorry ass put on some weak ass show and i hope the ratings drop like you just dropped a brick off a building.
The loss of NIP/TUCK will be felt by all of television and its viewing community, for at least a decade to come. However, I suspect that it will be more painfully felt by FX, the network, and the schmuck at the FX network, that axxed it in the first place (That executive will hopefully/probably be getting fired shortly after the last episode airs. Although, the episodes are probably being spaced way out over time, the way they will be, because the decision maker does not have any strength in his/her conviction and will try to point at other causes for… Read more »
You guys at FX are ignorant
How come it is taking so long for the show to come back on, it was supposed to be on by Sept. or Oct. and how are they canceling Nip/Tuck? This show made FX and without it they will go back to being nothing. Dirt needed to get canceled but not my favorite show. The Riches also needs to be canceled, its one of the dumbest shows I ever saw. I hope they change their minds, and also I need someone to bring back The 4400.
I NEW SUMTHING WAS GOING ON B CAUSE IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ON BY NOW…I HAVE BEEN WATCHIN NIP TUCK FROM DAY 1 AND THIS. WOW I HOPE THEY CHANGE THERE MINDS CAUSE THEY DO HAVE A LOT OF FANS. IF ITS GOING TO B CANCELED THEN AT LEASE START THE DAMM SHOW BACK OTHER FROM THE VERY FIRST EPISODES. A SAD DAY IN MIAMI THANK FOR NOTHING.
really sad to hear 🙁 i love this show, and i find out this.. tho they are planning on finishing 5th season and a 6th one. but why wait sooooo long =/
crazy to just take 1 year break in the middle of a season.
Well, the FX channel just lost another viewer. This show was the only reason I ever tuned into the FX channel. This was such a sad and dissapointing decision. Network exec are good at some things, but making decisions about what shows people want to watch is just not it. By doing this they now have one less viewer to worry about what they want to watch since Nip/Tuck is gone. I always loved that music they used for the into and it’s a shame not to hear it anymore.
