The Originals wrapped up its fourth season on CW on Friday night, and fans will have a long wait for the return of the series.
Why the long wait for the return of this series?
CW did not add The Originals to its fall schedule. The network is holding back the series, which started as a spin-off of The Vampire Diaries, to midseason. That means at least a late 2016 start, but more than likely the series will return to CW in January.
The decision to hold the series for midseason was discussed by Mark Pedowitz at the CW Upfronts earlier this week. According to TV Line, he said:
“We have a very strong schedule. We still believe quite a bit in The Originals. We only have 10 hours, so we made a choice to [hold it] to further boost our schedule at midseason.”
As a fan of this series, this writer was confused by the announcement of the delay to midseason. In a recent interview, Julie Plec talked about future crossovers between The Vampire Diaries and The Originals for next season, but the creator wants to have those opportunities come up organically.
A delay for one of the series cuts off the opportunities for those moments. The two shows have different casts and stories, but even after three years on the air, The Originals has shown that it is still very much connected to the world of The Vampire Diaries.
SPOILER ALERT. On the finale, Klaus sacrificed himself in order for all of his siblings to live. Freya created a spell that would put her siblings to sleep after Marcel had her poisoned and bit Elijah and Kol. Klaus was daggered, and the final moments saw Marcel hiding him away behind bricks. Hayley drove off and left New Orleans with four caskets and Hope. Her mission is to find cures for the Mikaelsons.
Right now, it looks like she will be looking for that cure for nine months. That is a one very long wait. Are you surprised that CW did not put The Originals on their fall schedule? Tell us what you think.

I was really looking forward to seeing the Originals this season. I really do hope they are coming back on in January. Please don’t cut their show. I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen when they return.

Why can’t CW have 3 shows in the evening time slot like every other station. It would make miss programs a lot better so we wouldn’t have to wait so long!!!!! And yes I miss The Originals

This is ridiculous!! I personally feel the originals is way better than the vampire diaries and the face that the vampire diaries had its MAIN actress just up and leave.. Was a total let down. The originals have a history and I feel the acting better as well.. As long as the story line. It’s never stale. I love it. Die hard fan of the originals and of all the Mikaelson boys!! ⚰⚰
Not all your patrons are4 to 20 something. I’m 66 and throughly enjoy The Orginals. I grew up with the real super heros so nothing great about that mess. Bring back my show that has so teeth to it.
Gutted this show has it all . Loyalty. Love. Intrigue. Vulnerability. Strength. I could go on hard to find something in other programs where all of the above you are keenly aware of above the violence you really do see there hearts
Yes I am very disappointed I really love the originals and hope it’s not being canceled just because the vampire diaries it to me is a separate show it’s ties are broken from them I would very much like to see upcoming seasons please. Don’t cancel it Thanks

The show is running out of ideas to keep the story going. Like someone else stated are they just going to show Haley for the entire season. Doing what? Back to Mystic Falls. They need to have better ideas to keep the show going. The past entire 2 yrs was nothing but Klaus’s enemies wanting to kill him. It got to the point that the show was so predictable that I knew what was going to happen before the next show aired.
Have been looking forward to the fall season and very disappointed to hear the Originals is not in the all line up. Let’s et this show going!
