We’ve received quite a few e-mails from readers who are been worried that Parenthood has been cancelled by NBC. Well, it hasn’t been canned and will actually be returning on January 4th. That’s the good news but fans shouldn’t get too complacent. The drama hasn’t been performing all that well and certainly isn’t assured of a third season.
Last May, Parenthood was one of those shows that was “on the bubble” but still ended up being renewed. Though season one premiered with a 3.1 rating in the coveted 18-49 demographic and 8.1 million viewers, it soon after dropped to a 2.3 rating and 5.83 million viewers. The 13 episodes of season one ended up averaging a 2.6 in the demo and 6.38 million total viewers.
For season two, Parenthood debuted at about the same demo rating it had at the end of season one. Unfortunately, that didn’t last. In mid-November, shortly before it went on hiatus, Parenthood hit a series low of a 1.8 rating in the 18-49 demo and 4.8 million viewers.
The first half of the season has averaged a 2.1 in the demo and 5.22 million. Parenthood is currently the seventh-highest rated scripted program on the network, falling in the middle of the list, just below The Event. While it’s not in immediate danger of being cancelled, the show’s certainly not safe either. Its fate will ultimately be decided by how well it performs when it returns from the six week hiatus. Most shows don’t typically fare very well and ratings drop after a hiatus. Will Parenthood be the exception?
What do you think? Will the ratings for Parenthood go up or down? Will it be cancelled or survive to see season three?

Please DON’T CANCEL Parenthood!!! My husband and I love this show!! It quickly became our most favorite show!! Bring back the Bravermans’ PLEASE!!! It’s the best show ever!!
Parenthhood is the BEST show on tv. The network needs to put it back on and try pre-emting other shows. do we really need 2 days of 2 hours of another singing show? cut the voice down to one hour and share the airwaves with parenthood.
Please say No!! I love, love, love, Parenthood. I have all my siblings watching it too. It has to be may favorite show on TV. It would be a big mistake to cancel this show.
Please don’t cancel parenthood. I love this show. Why is it all the good shows are getting canceled?? Please renew it.
What about all us baby boomers? We can relate to the patriarch and matriarch… and I have kids in their 20s and 30s, with kids of their own, who also really enjoy the show with their friends. I may not be in the “coveted 18-49 age group”, but come on, there are quite a few of us, and I have been so delighted with the exceptionally high quality of Parenthood. I would be very sad to see it get dropped. I thought I read that it is produced by Ron Howard… and seems loosely based on the movie of the… Read more »
Parenthood is fabulous. We arrange our schedules to watch it! And our friends come over to do so with us! NBC — you turned us into TV addicts. We never ever watched TV before! But now, between Parenthood and the Thursday shows (Community, Parks & Rec, 30 Rock, and The Office), we are “busy” on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and don’t pick up the phone! We could do without the lame Perfect Couples, the inane Outsourced, or the boring Paul Reiser show, however.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I cannot believe it! Is it really really canceled? It was THE my No.1 favorite show. All the actors played so well and I could relate to a lot of it. I usually watched Parenthood ON DEMAND (from NBC website) because 10pm was too late. I am sure I am not the only one. How does it affect to the rating? Please please bring the show back! It’s too many junky cheapy reality shows lately…
I LOOOOOOOVVVEEE Parenthood I agree with a lot that has been said its so nice to finally watch a decent family show! I got all my friends to watch it. I will be so upset if this first in along time talented show gets canceled. There is so much trash on tv this was a really good show. I love all the characters in it the are all amazing actors. It has been had to stay up late to watch it so I have to either DVR or watch on demand. I was so upset last night when I went… Read more »
Ack! Did they cancel for this Voice crap? Seemed it was still mid-season – where’s the finale at least?
Please don’t cancel Parenthood! I love this show! It’s refreshing to actually have a program to watch tha isn’t all blood, sex and violence. The actors are so good and the storyline hits closer to home to more families then you know. Keep it on, it’s great!
I am so sad to see the show parenthood replaced,u finally get a show that can inspire many families with real life drama to replace with another singing show, why? Please bring parenthood back:(
This is one of the best TV shows I’ve seen in years!! It captures all of the many important aspects of familyhood. I know a lot of other people who adore this program and we all are going to be extremely upset if it is truly gone!! Also, this show that began tonight (Voice) is worthless! Please bring back Parenthood!!
I agree love the show very disappointed it wasn’t on , actually one of the best shows on tv
I absolutely love that show…It’s familly oriented, very reality stuff that happen in our live at some point and time…The only down part and I’ll speak for myself it way to late…but I do make the effort to stay up just to watch that show…needless to say I never do this with other shows…I find the actors are really living their part and it makes it one of the reason it’s such a great, awesome show…Would really love to have it earlier if possible it would be great to watch with our kids…Conversation opener for sure…Love the show, love the… Read more »
My 17 year old daughter and I watch and LOVE this show. As someone else said, it’s not trashy, which is the direction of most of the other shows. And it has great sctors and very real plots, which open up opportunities to talk to my daughter about sex, drugs, drinking, etc. Love it!
I absolutely love this show. All the characters feel like my family each actor plays their part so well!!! I think part of the problem with the ratings is everything comes on Tuesday, Glee Idol, biggest loser, you name it, it seems to be on Tuesday. Why not move it to another night? I love, love, love the Braverman family I wish they could adopt me.
