Things were a little touch and go for awhile but NBC has now renewed Parenthood for a sixth season. It will be the last season and the cast and crew will have 13 episodes to say goodbye.
Parenthood revolves around the lives of the extended Braverman family in Northern California. The ensemble cast includes Lauren Graham, Dax Shepard, Tyree Brown, Joy Bryant, Max Burkholder, Erika Christensen, Miles Heizer, Sam Jaeger, Monica Potter, Savannah Paige Rae, Xolo Mariduena, Mae Whitman, with Bonnie Bedelia and Craig T. Nelson.
The series has never been a ratings hit for NBC but it has remained a pretty consistent performer with a devoted fanbase. This season, the ratings took a pretty dramatic downturn, dropping 20-30% compared to the fourth season. Shows like Revolution, Growing Up Fisher, and Believe all had better ratings but they were cancelled.
The network wanted to cut costs so they could bring the large ensemble series back for a final season but members of the cast reportedly didn’t want to agree to a smaller-than-usual episode guarantee. A compromise was eventually made.
We should have a better idea this week when season six will begin airing.
What do you think? Are you glad that Parenthood has been renewed for a final season? Would you like to see a seventh season or do you think this is the right time to end it?
I, too, am so disappointed in the cancellation of this show. My sister turned me on to Parenthood about four years back and it became one of my favorites shows. One of the problems with the show might be the nearly constant habit of the characters talking over one another (it got so bad that my aforementioned sister told me she couldn’t watch it anymore for that very reason. I took it upon myself to inform her when one of the shows wasn’t too bad in that regard so that she could watch it from her taped shows). I hope… Read more »
I am so sick that this show ended! It was so wonderful to watch a show that had nothing to do with violence and all the other carp tgat goes with it! It was a feel good show and I loved it Wonderful actors fabulous stories!! BBC I AM SO DONE WITH with YOU
So sad to see this show end! If NBC would stay with a show with a fan base like parenthood their success would be far greater!
So sad that Parenthood will not be returning. That show is the ONLY show that I watch on NBC. Most of my favorite shows are on CBS. Now, I will not be watching any NBC shows. I can’t believe the ratings were down, as I have heard many acquaintances talk about how Parenthood was their favorite TV show. In this day and age of violence on TV, this show was a breath of fresh air. It was real life and made you feel part of their family! It made you realize that not all families are perfect, and that in… Read more »
This has been a consistantly wonderful show, covering so many sensitive social issues over the seasons. I can’t believe that it has been cancelled as it has had quite a large following of viewers.
Please tell me a better show on TV??? Please because I can’t think of one. It had no cops, zombies, murders…only a wholesome family dealing with the reality of life. They were my family. I loved each and every person in the Bravermans!! AND Pamela..THANK YOU…One hour for a final episode….come on…they deserve, we deserve more than that.
I will miss them all, when Zeek died, so do a little place in my heart. Thank you Braverman’s more making my life a little bit better….you will certainly be missed by me and my husband!! <3
I HATE to see this show go!!! I have not missed one episode! I am so sad about it. In some crazy way I feel as if I have become a part of the family. I don’t have an extended family myself. I have two children and a husband all of which I love to pieces. I watch this show and long for the closeness and even the bickering and talking over each other of this family. How I wish my kids could experience this. I don’t understand why it didn’t get high ratings. It kind of reminded me of… Read more »
I’m very sad to see Parenthood go. One of my favorite shows. It was really and everyone could relate to it. There is so much crap on the TV these days it stinks when such a great show has to go. The season finale was disappointing. Agree with Pamela, we were robbed and t you let us loyal fans down. I will miss this amazing show and hope you reconsider putting it back on the air! It’s been done before!
I love this show, ive watched it since day one. So sad and upset that it’s canceled! The last show was so amazing… Besides the death of an amazing father Zeek Braverman there are so many wounderf things that took place, so much more of the Bravermans lives to be told /seen. By looking at the comments on Facebook it seems to me they have a great fan base. I see alot of people tore up because of the cancellation of this wounderful show. Please reconsider and bring back the Bravermans… Bring back Parenthood! Oh and there was way to… Read more »
So frustrated! I loved the Parenthood series and really looked forward to it every Thursday! The writing was phenomenal and regardless of your family make-up each person viewing could relate to the problems and issues that in each of the families! It’s VERY disappointing that the trashy shows always seem to make it! The good quality shows that could add value and relate ability seem to get cancelled. Then we wonder why is the family unit so misguided! The powers in charge need to take a hard look at the decisions they make and be accountable for really the lack… Read more »
I am so disappointed that Parenthood was cancelled. I have been a fan from the first episode and have never missed a show . The Braverman’s were a family most only hope for. I had nothing but love, concern, and a real interest in what was going on in their lives week to week. I just watched the final episode and cried uncontrollably. I truly feel I lost a family so dear to me. In my opinion, I feel NBC made an error in judgement. Parenthood was one of best shows on the air. I looked forward to watching intelligent,… Read more »
You could not have said it better. You expressed my feelings exactly. I just watched the final episode. I, too, cried my eyes out and am feeling an incredible loss. Parenthood was a wholesome show…something tv and society truly needs. I will miss my imaginary family greatly.
It was a great show and I’ll miss it. But, come on people, it’s just a show. The Bravermans aren’t your real family.
Honestly i cried at each episode and i thought the finally wasnt until next week and i pressed info half way through the “actual” finale. I was like omg no. Best part of the show was watching Monica Potter portray a strong breast cancer survivor and her battle was around the time my mom had breast cancer. Every single actor was amazing
Am so sorry to see this show end. I looked forward to watching it every week.
So if this show had so many loyal viewers then why did they say the ratings were so low? I think that’s a crock of lies!
We deserved a two hour finale!. The head writer of the show even said they cut out a bunch of scenes that they filmed that would’ve been really great. We were robbed. Thanks NBC FOR BEING SUCH AN ******* to its loyal viewers! A one hour season finale for such a great show…..REALLY?
