Although it just premiered on PBS last night, the Prime Suspect: Tennison TV show has been cancelled after only one season, by ITV. A prequel to the Helen Mirren police drama, and adapted from the Lynda La Plante novel Tennison, the Prime Suspect: Tennison TV show aired on the UK network as Prime Suspect 1973.
Prime Suspect: Tennison stars Stefanie Martini as Jane Tennison. The ITV and PBS TV series cast also includes: Sam Reid, Blake Harrison, Alun Armstrong, Ruth Sheen, Jessica Gunning, Andrew Brooke, Nick Sidi, Geraldine Somerville, Geoffrey Streatfeild, Nancy Carroll, Rosie Day, Lex Shrapnel, Jay Taylor, Jacob James Beswick, Joshua Hill, Daniel Ezra, Tommy McDonnell, and Jordan Long.
Mirror reports:
ITV’s Prime Suspect prequel has been axed after just one run, despite pulling in six million viewers.
The decision not to reorder the retro series, set in 1973, comes after an unfortunate fallout with author Lynda La Plante .
It starred Stefanie Martini as a younger version of Helen Mirren’s character Jane Tennison, when she was a rookie PC.
La Plante had originally been lined up to adapt her novel Tennison for the channel, but later quit the production, citing artistic differences.
At the time she claimed to have been left “very sad” by the fallout, but declined to say what sparked it.
ITV drafted in another writer with bosses saying they were “grateful” to Lynda for allowing them to adapt her “brilliant book”.
She has since penned a follow-up novel, Hidden Killers, which sees Tennison as a detective in the late 70s. But ITV said there were no plans to adapt it.
“We’re very happy with the performance of Prime Suspect 1973 but not everything is meant to run and run,” said one source.
What do you think? Did you watch the Prime Suspect: Tennison TV series premiere on PBS? Will you keep watching, even though you know this TV show is cancelled?
The prime suspect 1973_soundtrack is on Spotify, I am currently listening to love grows by edison lighthouse,.
I am still so disappointed by the, cancellation, the longer the standoff with Miss L Laplante the less likely we will get to see a second series.
Can anything realistically be done to resurrect it, maybe some divine intervention!
Very disappointed that Tennison was cancelled. I watched all the episodes and thoroughly enjoyed them.
Show was brilliant!! I am do disappointed it’s not coming back. Four episodes was not enough so I was really looking forward to a season two. Please work it out with the writer.
Having watched all of the original Prime Suspect, my wife and I found this one to be as good or better in some ways. The young actress who portrays Tennison and the rest of the ensemble, bring a nostalgic well acted story to life. Just about the time we fall in love with the star and cast it gets canceled.
I have one word for the decision to not bring it back for at least another season: ridiculous!
After watching the finale today, I was disappointed to find out there are no plans to continue with a second season. I was a big fan of Prime Suspect back in the day, and I think they did a good job of setting up the characters in this season, which would allow them to pick up the pace in a second storyline. Considering the amount of absolute garbage on TV these days that gets renewed season after season, I cannot understand why this is not being given a chance to further develop the character arc, especially with such high viewing… Read more »
Great show, excellent script , fine cast , the actress for Jane was excellent
The 1st episode we weren’t sure about, but the program greatly improved. We are sorry there will not be more episodes.
This was a wonderful show. I hate the fact that it will not continue. I wish they would change their minds.
Great show Itv needs new people that make decisions. They cancel GREAT shows. Hopefully someone with a brain so that this show and Homefires comes back. Hopefully a good network picks them up.
I am so disappointed that there will not be a second prequel season.
I thought it was well cast and acted. I hope the decision will be reconsidered.
Really enjoyed the series. Sad to see it’s not going to series 2. Hope it gets another chance.
I just watched the finale last night. I really enjoyed it and I am very disappointed that there won’t be another season I’m going to look for the second book in the series I want to know what happens with Jane I would have loved to have found out on PBS
Loved the show and hope that Netflix will work with author to move forward…so tired of great shows, being cancelled…sad..
I’m sorry to hear this news! I enjoyed episode one and two and know I will enjoy this Sunday’s final third episode. Wish they’d reconsider and renew for a Season Two.
P.S. I don’t know about UK results, but the U.S. critic reviews were decidedly mixed. I would prefer an episode of Vera, or any of the “Inspector” series, with apologies to all the fans on this platform.
