FOX has announced that the three unaired episodes of Red Band Society will run on two consecutive Saturdays — January 31st and February 7th — but that will be the end of the series. There won’t be a second season.
A dramedy, Red Band Society revolves around the young patients and caretakers of the pediatric ward of the renowned Ocean Park Hospital in Los Angeles. The cast includes Octavia Spencer, Dave Annable, Griffin Gluck, Nolan Sotillo, Charlie Rowe, Astro, Zoe Levin, Ciara Bravo, Mandy Moore, and Rebecca Rittenhouse.
The series debuted in September to unimpressive ratings and the numbers got much worse in subsequent weeks. It was no surprise when FOX chose not to order any additional episodes. Traditionally, that’s a sure sign that a series will be cancelled but word is that FOX and ABC Studios each made efforts to keep it going.
Though Red Band Society’s ratings were too low to keep it on the air as a regular season show, the network wanted to keep it — potentially as a summer series. The catch is that that would have required a lower licensing fee. It’s a high-end series and budgets for summer shows are really tight. In the end, it’s not a big surprise that a deal couldn’t be worked out with the studio for FOX to keep it.
Execs at ABC Studios also really like the series so they tried shopping it to other outlets to keep the show alive. Ultimately there were no takers so the series is now dead.
Red Band Society will end its short run on February 7th with a pair of episodes. Hopefully the finale will give dedicated viewers some sense of closure.
What do you think? Did you like Red Band Society? Are you sorry that the show’s been cancelled? Would you have followed it to another channel?
Loved this show. The actors were amazing and the story lines realistic. My daughter and I watched this each week and even talk about the characters between shows. I am really sorry to see the show canceled. I believe anyone who DST down and watched it stayed with it.
RBS was so much to so many people it really does seem to boil down to poor advertising of the show to begin with. Not many (OK very few) people even knew it was coming on until they just happened upon the first episode or one following. So, yeah, ratings probably was low and didn’t get better very fast. But, you not only have to take into account the introductory advertising BUT you also have to take into account the TIME and DAY it was on. Yeah, you may have moved the time and/or day BUT only to a WORSE… Read more »

Its so sad to see this show will not be returning for a second season. I love Red Band society!! I am so outdone. This show really warmed my heart.
OMG I LOVE THE SHOW, i would def follow onto another channel!!
Since the first episode of the show it took my breath away. Seeing these kind of things in a hospital is unusual but it is also heart breaking. Seeing how they deal with their disease is just knowing that there is hope for everyone. After the show ended my world collapsed and seeing this post made my world collapsed. The story was so good, everyone who watched this have the same reaction, but some may not. So sad to see that Red Band Society will be gone, after that cliffhanger they gave us. One suggestion for the T.V. channels why… Read more »
Red Band Society will stay in touch of my heart till the end of time

I was devastated to find out this show had been cancelled. The story line with the young patients experiencing so much in their young lives really was very emotional. They showed so much character and strength but showed how they persevered thru it with some humor. We would talk about the show in our office. It’s hard to become so emotionally invested in a great show like this only to loose it. We are all in mourning regarding the loss.
I was hooked on this show after the first episode So sad to find out it’s canceled!
