FOX has announced that the three unaired episodes of Red Band Society will run on two consecutive Saturdays — January 31st and February 7th — but that will be the end of the series. There won’t be a second season.
A dramedy, Red Band Society revolves around the young patients and caretakers of the pediatric ward of the renowned Ocean Park Hospital in Los Angeles. The cast includes Octavia Spencer, Dave Annable, Griffin Gluck, Nolan Sotillo, Charlie Rowe, Astro, Zoe Levin, Ciara Bravo, Mandy Moore, and Rebecca Rittenhouse.
The series debuted in September to unimpressive ratings and the numbers got much worse in subsequent weeks. It was no surprise when FOX chose not to order any additional episodes. Traditionally, that’s a sure sign that a series will be cancelled but word is that FOX and ABC Studios each made efforts to keep it going.
Though Red Band Society’s ratings were too low to keep it on the air as a regular season show, the network wanted to keep it — potentially as a summer series. The catch is that that would have required a lower licensing fee. It’s a high-end series and budgets for summer shows are really tight. In the end, it’s not a big surprise that a deal couldn’t be worked out with the studio for FOX to keep it.
Execs at ABC Studios also really like the series so they tried shopping it to other outlets to keep the show alive. Ultimately there were no takers so the series is now dead.
Red Band Society will end its short run on February 7th with a pair of episodes. Hopefully the finale will give dedicated viewers some sense of closure.
What do you think? Did you like Red Band Society? Are you sorry that the show’s been cancelled? Would you have followed it to another channel?
Wow….another great show cancelled! Nothing worth watching on TV now
My Family and I loved Red Band Society, it was one of the shows that all members of my family enjoyed and now that it is gone it is a HUGE LOSE. Fox should continue the series because its follower will be sad to see it go and just because it didnt have a rocking first season like Empire doesnt mean that this will not be one of the best shows at FOX network. personally i am EXTREMELY disappointed to hear this.
Red Band Society is riveting, canceling the show is tragic. Characters are large and real, scared and upsetting. The program makes it possible to cry large, hurting tears that cleanse and help. Please don’t cancel. I am not a child, and even thiugh the cheaters on the program are young, it is not really a program for youngsters. It is a program for anyone and for all.
My 16 year old daughter and I really enjoyed watching Red Band Society together each week. She related well to all if the teens and it opened up dialog between us about the characters and their situations. I can’t believe more people did not enjoy this show and I wish it was coming back!
I would literally wait for this show to come on. It was always the highlight of my week, scratch that….LIFE!!! I was really looking forward to a second season. I have never felt so many emotions: happiness, love, hope, sadness, anger, and I wouldn’t want it any other way. They really captured the attention and the hearts of many. If I could keep it going myself, I really would. I really hope this isn’t the end of the Red Band Society.
I was so angry when i found out that this show was not going to be continued!! This show explains alot! And is very realistic!! I think it should be continued!! I would really like that! This show is very liked!! It should be continued!!!!
I was so sad when I found out this show was cancelled its really hard for me to find shows I’m really interested in and willing to follow and keep up with’ season after season. I was really hoping this would be one of them. Hopefully it is brought back somehow in the future on another channel.
What a bunch of losers!!! Cancelling a show which was really close to the truth and reality of life and medicine!!! My son — 17 years old learnt a lot from this series than he did by any other means!!! Why do the big media companies only always look for profits!!! Some times why not give something back to the public/people?

why doesn’t,t fox issue a statement on axing red band, I still think that there,s hope another TV station gets it, hope it,s not net flicks which Don,t have.
Such a shame. Recently started watching On Demand because I remember the commercials looked promising during the fall. I’m hooked! Big bummer it stopped at season 1. You either connect with the show or you don’t, but it has great story lines. It would be great if it was aired on Netflix perhaps. Would deff watch!
Im so sad they are cancelling this show! As someone who has struggled with an eating disorder, this show helped my family and friends understand me so much more. Im devastated that its gone. It helped me so much. <3
This is one of those RARE shows that in this day and age I can actually curl up with 11yr old daughter and we could watch together. Not often anymore that we had a show we both liked and could watch together. It wasn’t obscene or vulgar and if the kids on the show were doing something wrong they amazingly learned a lesson from it! Something rarely promoted this day and age! To uncool I assume. It was a sweet show you could emotionally invest in. People get sick everyday and you think not me but yeah you. It’s a… Read more »
Literally this was an extremely awesome show. Pretty much down to everything, the music was amazing, the actors were perfect, and for me, I felt good after watching each episode. I feel as though viewers could get emotionally to the characters and their stories. It is really such a shame these days how all TV channels producers care about is ratings. There are so many dumb, fake and scripted reality TV shows out there, and finally there is a show that lets viewers see into what the lifesof young patients is like, and how they deal with it, and show… Read more »
Can’t believe this show was cancelled. We have to put up with “reality” shows of idiotic housewives and others and ONE SHOW THAT CAN HAVE AN IMPACT IS CANCELLED! Great show – the money has to be out there and the ratings I’m sure would be there, but more people need to know about it. Blast it everywhere – there are so many stupid shows on TV. We need real TV with what could be “real” people in tough situations learning to make their lives better – so good for all of us forging ahead. TV is so bad we… Read more »
