Is Second Chance getting a second chance? In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, executive producers Howard Gordon and Rand Ravich discussed the status of their sci-fi cop drama.
The series premiered on January 13th.
Second Chance stars Rob Kazinsky as Jimmy Pritchard, an irritable sheriff who is killed at age 75. He gets another chance at life, however, when he’s resurrected as his younger self.
The series went through several changes before its current incarnation. Based on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, it was previously titled The Frankenstein Code before being changed to Lookinglass before being changed to Second Chance. Then, in October, FOX cut the episode order from 13 to 11.
In the interview, both Gordon and Ravich addressed the episode cut, saying it has nothing to do with FOX canceling the series early:
First of all they’re spending money on reshoots, which is great. You don’t do that for [a show you don’t believe in], but it’s also put right after American Idol. We got the Empire slot. There is not a better slot on Fox, so if that’s not a show of faith. … It really is a scheduling issue. They offered us 13 [episodes]. They said, “Do 13, but we only have 11 continuously.” For storytelling purposes we said, “So, then let’s not do it.”
Ravich added that it was them who “begged” the network to reduced the episode order so they could better tell the story:
It was our choice to tell the story in the way it should be told and not have these two little episodes hanging out there that had no meaning.”
The premiere of Second Chance did okay in the ratings, receiving about 4.7 million viewers.
What do you think? Did you watch the premiere of Second Chance? Would you continue watching the series?
I have been watching from the beginning and have introduced a few people to it that went back and watched the earlier episodes to get caught up. This is one of the better shows on TV right now. It would be a shame for this show to be cancelled.
Hate to lose this one. Definitely a new and fresh idea. I was a fan since episode 1..
I love this show I watch it on Hulu. Don’t cx.
I have watched a lot of series but eventually I lose interest but, with this show I find myself looking forward to the next show . I think I’m addicted.
I love this show I will absolutely keep watching to see if looking glass and graff merge or become rival companies and to see mary and jimmy/james fall in love.
I love second chance. Please do not cancel it. Please. Thank you.
We have watched every show and hope it wont be cancled. My husband and I DVR it and can’t wait to see it each week.
My husband and I really enjoy this show – don’t know how anyone could not! But, when we really enjoy something it generally means it gets cancelled. I hope this one is the exception and is renewed for a second year!
My wife and I watch the show, We like it because it is different from other who done it shows with the frankenstein twist. Every show doesn’t need to be gay or reality tv. The other stations do a fine job of shoving that stuff done our throat, so to speak.
Love the show. It definitely should be given a second season. Please do not cancel.
I love Second Chance and want to see more.
Yes, I’ve been watching the show. Mostly on Hulu, because I work on Friday nights. I love the show. Don’t cancel it.
Terrific show offering a lot more than most cop shows!
We watch second chance every week, would hate to see it cut.
I love this show. I can’t believe it’s not a hit. Must have something to do with the scheduling because anybody who watches this show should love it. It’s got everything including lots of chemistry between Pritchard and Mary. Please don’t cancel this show. There’s so much crap on tv most of the time. All these ridiculous sitcoms that make men look like morons. Please give us women out there who like men to be men something to watch.
