Telly’s Take
Based on the ratings, things already didn’t look good and then they started airing two episodes a night which smelled like a burnoff. The Viacom execs have been shuffling programs on their channels (including BET, CMT, TV Land, VH1, and MTV) so they may be okay with this big dip in the ratings as they try to establish the new Paramount Network. I’ll keep a hungry eye out and will update this page with breaking developments (and, hopefully, my supper plans). 1/17 update: Paramount Network has cancelled The Shannara Chronicles, but the producer will shop season three to other outlets. Details here.

What do you think? Do you hope the The Shannara Chronicles TV show will be renewed for a third season? How do you feel about Spike/Paramount Network cancelling this TV series?
Really enjoying the series. Hope its back for another season.
I absolutely love this show! I hope that it doesn’t end on a cliff hanger if there won’t be anymore seasons. I don’t think enough people know that it has moved from mtv to spike though. Hoping for season 3!!
Yes I want the show to have season 3 too.
Renew The Shannara Chronicles and for goodness sake bring back and renew The B astard Executioner which was a fascinating and partially based on historical fact show that had much to offer the intelligent amongst us who abhor the mind numbing proliferation and totalitarianism of mindless reality tv shows. The rise of this dross style TV genre is as bewildering as President Drumpf’s election and continued existence in the White House
Person after my own mind, love both shows. Just got done watching them all the way through. And it’s a hell of alot better that making teen pregnancy look glamorous
I wanted to love this show. But I actually hate it. I cannot find ways to like this, other than Malese Jow’s character. Strong and a badass. BUT this is fantasy at its worst. Writing isn’t horrid. Stray too far from the books. No one is clearly watching. Why would you try to launch a new rebrand of your network with this POS.
Highly recommend to NOT renew.
Too bad you feel this way…Terry Brooks is working on this show and the scripts and approves everything the show is doing and you can’t get any better then that..If the show lasts long enough, it will undoubtedly get more into the books, but for now, there is an author approved plot line and story. Nothing wrong with embellishing the story especially if the author himself not only approves, but is helping producing it.
Its called selling out which is what Brooks did. He went along with the stupid teen fantasy crap and thought it would sell. Its nothing like the books and is far cry from the quality that the first 3 books had. Its not embellishing the story… its nothing like the story… the characters are hollow versions of themselves in the books… the whole tone of the series is absolutely nothing like the books. What Brooks did to his own work is crap all over it and the fans. imo The ratings suck because the show sucks, if they had followed… Read more »
As far as I understand the first season was what he approved, but he sold the rights so now they have the power to screw it up. The first season was like the book ( the second one only) but the ratings are probably down cuz it is NOT like the books.
I have not red the books but I do love the show. I think the ratings drop is there was no way you could of known of the second season unless you searched the net. there was no advertisement to let viewers no of the network switch or second season. I really hope they have a third season with some advertisement to let the original viewers no and new ones to find out. I will definitely be reading the books and hoping for a third season
I believe switching networks after just the first season was likely the main reason that the second season had such low ratings. I had a hard time tracking the show down after it jumped networks. That was the only show I watched on MTV and they didn’t advertise nearly enough for Shannara outside of MTV itself. So when the switch happened, I figure most people lost track of the show like I did and probably thought it was just wasn’t coming back. Only way I found it was to search for news about it hoping to find some more info.… Read more »
Thank You!
So true! Missed the second season due to not knowing where to find it. Didn’t know there was one.
Thought it was a great show! Seems like every time a show comes alone that can really get into, it gets dropped for some other genre I can’t stand, like stated above “mindless reality tv shows”. Following shows today can be difficult when their being moved around or having time changes. Many times I’ve missed or come in part way on seasons. I can see why the viewership would be down in size.
It’s really a decent show. I was a little disappointed with how far it strayed from the books but I knew it would. What movie hasn’t? But I have really grown to like the show and really look forward to watching every week. I think the big problem is the very long hiatus between seasons. I really hope the renew for another few seasons.
This show doesn’t just have bad ratings. No body is watching it. I am a avid lover of the books and want to like it but there is nothing to watch. You can’t have a 10 episode season that just shows drama for the sake of drama with little to no actual content and have people with an actual intellect watch this crap. I keep on laughing when I see that there are writers on these shows. The content has been written. If you actually believe this is what people of the genre want to see just look at the… Read more »
What is causing the low ratings are horrible changes that have been made in adapting the book for the show. There are characters in this second season that have become uninteresting in relation to the first season and some new ones are useless for the story (cof..cof .. Lyria … cof..cof …). The dialogues are another terrible thing. They have that very teenage tone. This is nothing epic. If they had made a more faithful adaptation of the books with “Lord of the Rings” dialogues on which the books were based, it would certainly be incredible! After all, I hope… Read more »
That isn’t entirely true… I had absolutely no idea that season 2 was even out until it had finished. Same goes for my friends who watch it too. We found a way to watch it and we all did so together. All of us hope it comes back, especially to see more Malese! Imo, she’s the most beautiful and talented on the show. Not to mention her character is a badass!
Just advertise more and the viewers will increase. Maybe not to game of thrones levels, but the drop would have been much less significant. I hope it comes back!
Renew the season, Please.
Best fantasy show at the moment,it even got much better than the 1 season! Changes of network and I think much less money involved in the marketing of that leaded to low ratings, I would like to know what are their numbers in dvr!!!
i hope they do come back but i also hope they will not be so skimpy on how may they make , like come on 4 to a series whats that called , was 10 or so in the 1st lot ,,,the Books are Great by the way ,,,hope we don’t hav to wait a lifetime for the next ones as well
I like The Shannara chronicles and i keep my fingers crossed for the series 2 be renewed for a third season 😉
RENTED DEFINITELY!!!!!
They need to give The Shannara Chronicles a chance to recover from almost a 2 year hiatus. This show is phenomenal, and the original fans would have had to check up on it’s status regularly to know where and when to watch it. I truly hope that they do not cancel the show due to the drop in ratings. Advertise it on all the viacom networks, buy advertisements on social networking. Spread the word, and fans will flock with excitement. The story is just as fulfilling as the first season, but the fans need to know it has returned, and… Read more »
