ABC’s Six Degrees was yet another ongoing dramatic series of the 2006 – 2007 season. It told the stories of six very different New Yorkers who we slowly learn are actually connected. The show is based on the idea that anyone can be connected to another through a chain of no more than six people. The series, co-executive produced by Lost’s J.J. Abrams, starred Jay Hernandez, Erika Christensen, Hope Davis, Dorian Missick, Bridget Moynahan, and Campbell Scott.
Six Degrees debuted on September 21, 2006 and was pulled from the airwaves after only six episodes due to low ratings (leaving seven episodes unaired). At the time, ABC stated that the show would return in January 2007. Viewers were understandably skeptical. Well, a January return won’t be happening now but there may be some hope for fans of Six Degrees.
In Pasadena, CA, at the annual Television Critic’s Association (TCA) tour, ABC Entertainment President Stephen McPhearson fielded questions about several shows, including Six Degrees. Of fellow dramatic series The Nine and Six Degrees, he said “those two actually may get back on the air in (primetime).” Not exactly a vote of confidence, and yet…
Though Six Degrees is not scheduled to go beyond the 13 episodes of its initial order, strangely enough the series is actually still in production. The cast and crew reportedly took some time off to creatively retool the series. In addition, Josh Charles (who you may remember from Aaron Sorkin’s Sports Night) has been added to the cast.
Though it seems like the show (like so many this season) has been effectively cancelled, it may not be a done deal. The fact that production is continuing seems to indicate that ABC has not given up hope and seriously intends to air the remaining seven episodes. It probably doesn’t hurt that J.J. Abrams is one of the executive producers.
If the revisions to Six Degrees are successful and better ratings are achieved, it is possible that ABC could give the go-ahead for future episodes and even a second season. It’s a bit of a long shot right now but stranger things have happened. We’ll keep you posted so stay tuned!
“Six Degrees” was a series I found just as it disappeared. I have only seen three episodes but have been trying to find it ever since. I found it very engaging and would like to see more. Please consider its return and continuation. I am selective about what I choose to watch and a faithful viewer of the series I choose. This is a program I would like to be able to watch regularly.
Let me begin by saying that I am EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED with ABC’s decision to cancel SIG DEGREES. First, they put their viewers through hoops the first time around having a huge gap of time from it’s original air date, stating that it would air in January, then February, then finally in March. We were all very excited, to then basically be teased for one episode in March & the show is cancelled? What the hell is that? ABC never gave it a chance, never really promoting it like they’ve done with other useless shows! SIG DEGREES’ cast and characters are… Read more »
Pleeeeeese I’m begging you on bending knee, bring back my show. I’ve been waiting for so long to see six degrees. Why oh why have you cancelled this great show. No one asked me obviously to rate this show. From the 1st day that I saw this show I was hooked. The actors are great, this is the greatest series on tv/ ABC what is wrong with you, the nerve putting wifeswap in place of six degrees, it was just on 2 weeks or so ago and now gone. You must bring it back, you just have to, I need… Read more »

I was SO ANNOYED that ABC put on that ridiculous Men in Trees to replace Six Degrees! i love that show…..and i just heard it was cancelled!! PLEASE at LEAST put the remaining episodes online!!!
I’m hoping that by writing here the powers that be will get that there is a market for well written, well acted, shows. I was an instant fan of both Six Degrees and The Nine and really pissed off that they were pulled so quickly. Sometimes it takes a while to build an audience for a show – remember Cheers and Cagney and Lacey? When the plot is the least bit complicated and requires attention, it takes longer for people to get into it. But it’s so worth it! PLEEEAAASSE bring them both back (I know that Six Degrees was… Read more »
