NBC has confirmed that their musical drama Smash has been officially cancelled. There won’t be a third season.
The news certainly doesn’t come as a surprise. Everyone but the most optimistic viewers assumed that the series was already done.
Smash premiered very well last season when it followed The Voice. Despite the strong lead-in, the ratings declined as the first season wore on.
NBC renewed it anyway with an order for 18 installments. They no doubt regretted that move when season two debuted to poor numbers. The ratings got worse and they chose to burn off the remaining episodes on Saturday nights, rather than simply pull the show off the air.
The last two episodes of Smash are scheduled to air on Sunday, May 26th. Hopefully the producers saw the writing on the wall soon enough and wrapped up the ongoing storylines.
What do you think? Did you like Smash? Are you sorry that the series was cancelled?
Smash is a good show. When everything out there is crime, medicine or idiots, this was a refreshing break. I cannot believe that this show didn’t have lots of watchers who are as disgusted with the usual drival that is being served up to us by television networks. Shame on you for cancelling Smash!
So sad to see this show go, I love musical theater. I am bored beyond the beyond with the drivel of so many other TV offerings, along with totally nauseated by Glee, enough is enough, I really will miss this show. Wish you would move it back to after the Voice and focus more on the musical theater story.
This show has taught me so much. After watching this, I’ve learned so many new things, and gained confidence in myself. I am a huge theater geek, and every single show is absolutely dumb because they involve violence and NOBODY WANTS TO WATCH A BAJILLIONTH COP SHOW!!!! This show was NBC’s best in my oppinion. I absolutely adored the beautiful songs, characters, and liveliness! I will go all ‘Newsies’ and strike if you cancel this! Please, please don’t! I love this show so much.
Found the show Smash by accident one Saturday night in season 2. Since that time I have been a dedicated fan. I hate to see it end.
awww c’mon NBC. A decent musical show with interesting characters and story lines and you just go away? I am so SICK of networks doing this. No wonder cable is kicking the networks collective asses.
This was a nice series until they brought the two dumb kids into the scripts. That being said, it is still better than the reality crap deluge that the networks are trying to force-feed us!
This is my absolutely favorite show!!! It can’t be canceled. I literally live for this show. The plot and music are so moving and very creative. Hopefully there is a chance they will renew the show after seeing these comments.
Sorta sad to see the series go, Kat McPhee is a stellar performer, a notch above the others in the cast probably because she can act AND sing(the same can be said of Megan Hilty), and it was a fun glimpse of theater culture for those who couldn’t get to NYC as often as they’d like. Still, the soapy, who’s-sleeping-with-who aspect of the show was getting annoying, some of us tuned in to see a Broadway show being put on, not “Melrose Place’ reruns. Smash’s run may have been short, but it was good for the time it was on.… Read more »
Sad to see this show cancelled. Great music, acting and story line. Fulfilled the bill for some Broadway entertainment….sad, just sad
Sad to see it is cancelled. It was a quality show. Enough of realty shows, game shows, violence,. This is what happens when a network changes time slots. Sad for tv viewers.
I am disappointed that Smash is being cancelled. Its been so nice to have a show that pertains to a certain “Broadway-loving” audience. It was a nice look into Broadway shows and the efforts that go into the them. There isn’t another show like this on the air and NBC should not take it off. If they had done a better job publicizing it, reaching out to more of those Broadway fans it might have stayed on the air. This was a great opportunity for performers on Broadway to make their TV debut and I hope NBC has some sense… Read more »
Finally a show that doesn’t have violence in it and NBC cancels it. WE ARE TIRED OF COP SHOWS AND VIOLENCE. Please give this show another chance.
I am so, so disappointed that the show is cancelled. Love the cast and love the music. The insight into the lives of Broadway hopefuls and stars is really interesting. Hopefully the fans of the show will raise voices in protest and the network will bring the show back.
Fans should speak up!!!
I am very sorry to see smash cancelled! I thought the storylines were picking up actually. I think moving it to Saturday really killed it. Monday would have been a much better spot for it as all the theaters are dark and people are at home starting their week. Performances were mostly strong. As I said writing was picking up and I wish they would have continued with better writers and given it more of a chance. Very interesting look at theater production! Really will miss!
I am sad to see Smash cancelled because I thought the characters were interesting, and the story lines were fun. I must admit that the show dragged more often than it should have, but the actors are fantastic and did what they could with some poor material! Megan Hilty is phenomenal. I cannot wait to see her more.
I just hope they release season 2 on DVD so I can have something from this show. I can file it away with Pan Am and Homefront…. other excellent shows that never had a chance.
I feel the same way. I swear NBC does not know what they are doing 🙁 I love this show. The cast is fantastic.
