Tonight, TNT airs the last episode of Southland’s fifth season. Will the cop drama be cancelled or renewed for a fifth season instead? How are the ratings?
Southland follows the lives of a group of police officers who “serve and protect” the residents of Los Angeles. The ensemble cast includes Michael Cudlitz, Benjamin McKenzie, Regina King, Shawn Hatosy, C. Thomas Howell, and Tom Everett Scott.
The fourth season of Southland attracted an average of 1.84 million total viewers with a 0.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic. That was down from season three which averaged 1.99 million and a 0.7 in the demo.
Season five dropped even lower. The nine episodes have dropped 24% to 1.4 million with a 0.5 rating. Dallas, which has been airing on Monday nights, has done much better — averaging 2.67 million and a 0.8 rating.
TNT has taken great pride in airing Southland but these numbers are not good and they could easily choose to cancel it. Or, they could bargain to give the series one final season for closure.
The cast and crew have produced just 43 episodes over the five seasons and unfortunately even one more season won’t give them enough for much of a syndication package.
If TNT does cancel the show, viewers may not have long to miss some of the show’s stars. McKenzie, King, and Hatosy have all signed on to star in new TV show pilots. If Southland does continue, they’ll return to TNT.

I say it’s run its course. It had lots of potential, but got derailed. The writing changed drastically, and not for the better, after the 3rd year, or really when it went to TNT. It’s become less and less believable, and the authenticity and credibility compared to other shows was supposed to be its calling card. Time’s up.
This is one of the best shows ever. Don’t cancel it. If you need to, move it to a different time or day. Dallas can not compete with it

One of the best shows on tv. I hope it gets renewed for a LONGER season. Although if john cooper dies i’d stop watching.

PLEASE DON’T CANCEL THIS SHOW! This is the best cop show ever. The actors and the writing are great. I look forward to watching it so much . I don’t understand how some shows on TV that should be taken off and the good ones are canceled. Ridiculous!!! I would be soooo sad if this show is off air..PLEASE DON’T CANCEL!
Please don’t end this honest, exceptionally well written and brilliantly acted show. It is a gem in a pile of rocks. Ending after this finale would be incredibly cruel to the fans of this show. There is no resolution, no tying up of loose ends… Having to wait for Season 6 is extremely difficult in light of tonight’s gut-wrenching ending, and the thought of the unthinkable being true is hard enough. Southland ,Shameless the two best dramas on television. The actors are real Why are ratings low ? I dont understand why shows are cut . The minute you start watching something good it gets cut. Please dont cut the show . If you do cut it you simply dont know what your doing. So many good shows have been cut in the past ten years its unreal.Wish I could make the decision on what got cut. Who makes these decisions ?
Please DO NOT CANCEL this show TNT! This is the ONLY police drama I have ever watched religiously since its premiere on that other dumb network.
This show is one of the all time classic police dramas and to end it now would not do it justice. All of us fans need a final season to see how it comes to an end. Being a retired police officer it’s like I’m back on the job hooken and booken. I want to suit up every time I watch the show. TNT please give us fans at least one more season to see Southland have it’s best season ever. Thanks!
The best police Drama on TV…watching since its inception. Last week was heavy…..Meth heads need to be dealt with….way overdue.
