Star is coming to FOX from Lee Daniels, and the series now has its showrunner. Deadline reported that Charles Murray has signed on to executive produce and run the series. In the past, he has worked on a variety of shows, including Sons of Anarchy, Castle, and Criminal Minds. Murray’s most recent projects include Marvel’s Luke Cage for Netflix and the Roots’ remake.
Star will follow a girl group as they deal with the ups and downs of the music business. The series will feature Queen Latifah and Benjamin Bratt with Jude Demorest, Ryan Destiny and Brittany O’Grady as the young actresses to play the group on the show.
Jonnie Davis, president of creative affairs at 20th TV, said the following about Murray’s joining the project:
“Charles has written in every conceivable genre, on shows from Sons of Anarchy to Castle to Criminal Minds. He literally defines versatility, and he brings a passion for excellence and a confidence to every project. Star is a huge priority for the network; it’s wildly ambitious and packed with talent from the luminous Queen Latifah to the bright young discoveries that form the girl group at its center. Charles is exactly the right showrunner to take on this exciting series and ensure that we not only shoot for the stars but actually reach them.”
