Though Stargate Universe was cancelled midway through its second season (the last 10 episodes will air in the Spring), executive producer Brad Wright thinks there’s a chance that the story could continue. Wright contends that, “We haven’t given up on finishing the story we started.”
Wright was traveling when the cancellation news came down from Syfy and is now looking for a way to continue the series in some form. Wright tells Chicago Now’s Curt Wagner that he and MGM, the studio that owns the rights to the Stargate franchise, are discussing several possible options. He said, “It’s heartening to see so many people upset about Syfy’s cancellation of the show but it’s important to remember that their license fee represented only a portion of our total budget.”
While this is positive news, its a long way from the show being saved. Based on what Wright has said, it would seem that a substantial portion of the SGU budget comes from other sources like DVD sales. A possible option could be to do direct-to-DVD movies but then, fans are still waiting for a Stargate Atlantis movie. The series could be sold to another channel but that’s always a tough sell.
What do you think? Would you like to see Stargate Universe continue in some form — as a DVD movie, online short videos, comics, or novels? Or, would you rather see one of the other shows in the franchise return in some way?

I must say that i agree with previouse posts , SYFY seems to be determined to self destruct . i have been a fan of stargate since the very beginning and in my opinion SGU will become bigger then atlantis in the long run . the story is just picking up speed now and is just beggining to understand the true nature of each character. i think this is a mistake . i can see cancelling a ****** show such as CAPRICA but not SGU come one syfy get ur thumb outta ur ass
You know it would be nice if SGU was saved somehow like another network buying it. Sci-fi made the dumb mistake on letting it air in the U.S on tuesdays while the Canadians (like me), and everyone else around the world were able to watch it on netflex and online that same very night or the day after… Like really who would want to wait another 3 days.. IDEATS But if another show was able to air in its place, They should bring back SGA sense the only reason it was cancalled was to give SGU a running start.. But… Read more »
You must be kidding! Every time I get hooked on a show, a network shoots them down. I like Universe. Ican’t decide how I feel about the characters, and each week gives me some insight into how these characters evolve. Syfi seems to want to be the horror channel instead of sci-fi. Maybe they should change their name and a REAL sci-fi channel could be formed.
Put a young, good looking cast in it and bring it back.
Stargate needs to entice a new audience… the same one that flocked to the new “star trek” movies.
Nobody likes watching old people have sex… it’s that old thing.
I was majorly disappointed to find out this show wouldn’t be renewed. SGU has great acting and writing and is the closest in the series to the original movie. I hope it gets renewed on a different channel. Major fail “syfy”!!!!!!!
After reading a few more comments, seems like everyone is on the same page. Sounds like the channel is self destructing by changing its identity and programs. Wish I was in the front office. 24/7 SciFi would be SciFi. Enterprise, voyager, the next generation. BSG old and new, SG everything, old SciFi flicks, Sci/Fi movies…. and new stuff like SGU. SGU could be the next best thing! Ugh! So discouraging
You’re blowing it SYFY. You fell off the wave after BSG. you should have some smart people there. There is plenty of stories old and new that can be made. SGU was going somewhere and my family was really enjoying the program. Your making a mistake. Case in point…Smackdown? There is way too much material out there to be airing ridiculous wrestling junk. What the heck are you people doing! Get back on the horse or shut the channel down.
Technically the show wasn’t cancelled, it just wasn’t renewed by Syfy. MGM owns the show, not them. Personally I think SGU is easily the best series of the three. While SG-1 and SGA were fun, they were ultimately just brains-off action adventures, while SGU is much more thoughtful and true to the genre. With Caprica and SGU gone from their line-up, I’m struggling to see anything worth watching on Syfy any more.
I guess I have been out of the loop. Until now. Cancelling Universe is a big mistake. The show did start slow but it has picked up speed. There are now connections fans have with the characters. The story line has taken an interesting turn and I have been rooting around looking for when the next episode would air. What a shame. SYFY, you people have had some really good programs. I thought or rather was very skeptical about a remake of BSG. But WOW! What a ride. SG1, SGA,and now SGU. there are so many old science fiction stories… Read more »
I’m really sad to see the cancellation of Stargate Universe and SyFy has proved that it has zero credibility anymore. I wish the channel a slow and painful death. And I’m really hoping to see SGU continue in some form. This show is a rare conjunction of smart writing, amazing acting, and great effects–it deserves to get more recognition. Intelligent science fiction is scarce on TV and those of us who aren’t just drooling fanboys are very disappointed by its loss.
Getting fed up of how the Stargate franchise is being treated now. Just when Universe finds it’s place it’s bloody cancelled. Instant ratings or death, that’s what TV is these days.
I do think the 2nd season has been much better than the 1st … but that’s not too hard since the 1st was bad in so many ways. The biggest problem for me remains that I just don’t care what happens to these people even after all of these episodes. I find the characters either boring or outright despicable. The way they behave often makes me wish they’d be sucked out an airlock. There’s no balance between good and bad — they’re just all *bad* in one way or another. I’m sorry for those who like the show that it’s… Read more »
While SGU is not that bad of a show, it certainly does not live up to SGA or even SG1. I would personally like to see SGA come back. It had a good ending but there is lots more out there that can be done with what was left lingering. What happens to the city? there are still more wraith. What about Weir? she’s still out there….and more. Just my thoughts.
This really sucks. You cant say SGU was the best SG series, not that it wasnt; but it had its own genre in the ‘Stargate Universe’. Truly one of the best written shows TV has seen in a long time…given time, it could easily overtake Battlestar Galactica in popularity. Sy Fy has been going down hill ever since it decided to try to shed its SCIENCE FICTION persona. Its a shame that a good many shows have to be tanked because of one sinking ship.
And seriously, who the hell needs that many ghost shows!?
Stargate Universe really improved and it is a great show now that it has found its groove. Sometimes it takes a show a while to come into is own. In these days of “let’s cancel it after episode 3” there are some great shows out there that never would have been. Think about ST:TNG, the first season really stunk for the most part. These days, it would have never survived. The industry needs to face the facts – Nielsen ratings are antiquated given all the media out there today. It needs to be re-vamped or tossed out as to whether… Read more »
