Syfy has given the go-ahead for a second season of Stargate Universe and a third season of Sanctuary. The cable channel has ordered 20 installments of each.
Stargate Universe (SGU) is the latest series in the Stargate franchise and revolves around a band of soldiers, scientists and civilians, who must fend for themselves after being forced through a Stargate. The desperate survivors emerge aboard an ancient ship which is locked on an unknown course and unable to return to Earth. It features Robert Carlyle, Justin Louis, Brian J. Smith, Elyse Levesque, David Blu, Alaina Huffman, Jamil Walker Smith, Patrick Gilmore, Peter Kelamis, Julia Benson, Jennifer Spence, Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman, Mark Burgess, Ming-Na, Josh Blacker, Haig Sutherland, and Lou Diamond Phillips.
Sanctuary follows the adventures of Dr. Helen Magnus (Amanda Tapping), a brilliant scientist who holds the secrets of a group of strange and sometimes terrifying beings that hide among humans. Others in the cast include Robin Dunne, Emilie Ullerup, Ryan Robbins, Christopher Heyerdahl, and Agam Darshi.
SGU is expected to return in April with the second partth of its 20 episode first season. Production on season two will begin in early 2010 and is expected to start airing in the fall.
The second season of Sanctuary is currently airing and expected to finish on January 15, 2010. Production on season three will start in early 2010 and begin airing in Fall 2010. This recent pickup marks the biggest order to date for Sanctuary. Seasons one and two are comprised of only 13 episodes apiece.
What do you think? Are either or both of these shows worthy of another season? Which do you prefer?

SGU sucks. The characters are unlikeable, the plots dismal and depressing, the sets dark, redundant.
Its like “lost in space” meets “LOST”, without any of the two shows redeeming qualities.
Kill it.
Sanctuary is a light weight. Good for an hours diversion – If nothing better is on elsewhere – like reruns of Lawrence Welk.
SYFY has bombed out guess it should be renamed the doofus channel, Its marathons of Ghost hunters this, Ghost Hunters that and wrestling seem designed to kill the SCI-Fi franchise.
Both are awful. After 11 years of watching Tapping as a hot, intelligent blonde, I can’t begin to fathom what the producers of this bowser were thinking. As for SGU — oooooo….dark sets and deep drama! Stargate as recycled Galactica. Didn’t these guys learn anything from Stark Trek: Enterprise?
Two thumbs down and around the world for “SyFy” and it’s rapid decent into medi0crity.
I think people are being too harsh on SGU. I remember liking the movie and then never getting into SG1 until maybe season 3 and then going back to watch the earlier ones. So SGU is different and more character driven. They do need to work on that part and make the show not move so slow but did you seriously think you’d have them visiting planet after planet meeting aliens that looked like humans dressed in medieval clothes??? Geez, they did that enough in SG1 and SGA. Every show was predictable in those 2 series, you knew there would… Read more »
More like curled up a using my DVD’s as a pillow!
I can’t believe what I’m reading. I love SGU. It’s starting off dark just like SG1 did. I think the actors are doing a fine job and the storylines so far have been interesting and make me wnat to continue to watch. If the rest of you don’t like it then don’t watch.
OMG OMG , Say NO to the SGU space drama its horrible. I’m a big fan if not the biggest fan of the Stargate series. How many times i’ve seen the series? Well lets see.. 5 times for SG-1 and 3 times for Atlantis. And now they force me to watch the old shows again, coz the SGU series are simply unwatchable.
I have tried but I can’t get into Sanctuary. I watched the first 3 episodes and they had some promise but certain things about the show just start to annoy me, like the communication stones. Its started to become a joke device and a bad one.
The stories have promise as I can sit through parts of some episodes, but they just need a little more work and financial backing to bring it up to par.
I would have to agree with you, concerning the communication stones. I think it’s starting to get old. The actors themselves are failing to hold any sort of grip on the show so far. It all feels very bland. When I watch it, I feel like I’m watching people practice, rather badly no less, their acting skills (or there lack of) and not a good sci-fi show. When I watched the older series’ like Atlantis and SG1, I got very involved with the episodes and couldn’t wait until the following week for newer episodes. I catch re-runs every now and… Read more »
The communication stones are in SGU. And yes, are very annoying! And confusing!
My husband and I are big fans of Sanctuary and Stargate Universe. We look forward to watching the shows each week!!!!!!! Amanda Tapping is such a good actor and seeing her in this different role is great. I hope the show will continue for many more seasons.
SGU is good, was a little hard to get into but as it goes on getting better.
You blew it when a entire family would stay up until 1 am to catch stargate atlantis and stargate reruns over and over waiting for a new show cancelling is a joke. The money could be raised by recreating set through photography melding just like they did in sixties and seventies in editing rooms.Asanctuary was a little harder to get used to but now would not give up amanda tapping in either. Problem at first was wanted her to be sammatha carter not her fault she did such a outstanding job in Stargate 1st if roles were reversed we would… Read more »
The show is BAD BAD BAD, real soap opera, boring drama in space. I literary fall in to a sleep while watching one of the episodes. Actors are not B grade, but C grade quality (except Carlyle). HERE IS THE UGLY TRUTH: everybody cares only for profit and nothing else. They invested a really small amount of money in making this horrible show, and they will make big profit because the people will watch it anyway because there is STARGATE word in the title. I watched all 10 episodes, each time disappointed, just to see is this show getting any… Read more »
PLEASE CANCEL SGU!!!! It is a horribly boring show that is staining the name Stargate.
As a Stargate fan I have watched ever one of the SGU’s episodes. All of them required fast forwarding just to get through the tedium.
Re. SGU & Sanctuary: Tom, Richard & Neha said it all!
What I can’t believe is how atrociously bad the made for TV Sci-Fi channel movies are in both writing and acting. Have you seen Annihilation Earth? Marina Sirtis & that accent?
Oh I know what you mean Chuck. I only saw one or two movies on SyFy, but two was plenty for me. It seems the TV series, Sanctuary, seems to have the same horrible special effects (if you can even call it that) as the movies. I am just ready for SyFy to take their shows a bit more seriously. Maybe then the fans will have more respect and interest in the network.
I must agree with both Tom and Richard. I am a HUGE fan of Stargate SG-1 and even Stargate Atlantis. I can’t recall how many times I’ve gone back and watched SG1 and was still amazed at how good it is, even after all these years. When I first saw the trailers for Stargate Universe, I knew right off the bat that this show was, not only going to be brutally bad, but that it might stain the good Stargate name. It has been a very slow season and I must admit, the titles of the episodes have been rather… Read more »
I’m really disappointed at both of these shows. SGU is slow and non-interesting and Sanctuary uses way too many special effects. I purchased the SG1 DVD set and have been watching a disk each Saturday night. I’m up to the middle of season 8 (not the best season) and it blows SGU away in every aspect. SG1 makes me want to watch it through the characters and writing, but SGU is a struggle to hang on till the end of the show. As for Sanctuary, I only watch it because of Amanda Tapping (like the new hair). The other characters… Read more »
I’ve been a die-hard Stargate fan since the original movie trailer hit theaters. SGU is every reason SG-1 & SGA don’t exist anymore, the writers are empty hacks at this point, with every ‘new idea’ being a regurgitated clone of some other tv show’s episode. SGU is absolutely NOTHING but Star Trek Voyager with bad actors & an inept script. Carlyle is a solid actor who is stranded amidst horrid writing & ridiculous crybaby scenes performed by Chloe, better known by fans as ‘Forehead.’ I tried so hard to love the new series as anything Stargate makes my hair stand… Read more »
Richard Harrington. Touche’! I am a woman and hate SGU! I totally agree with your critique’ of this horrible, lackluster very very very weak attempt at continuing the Stargate saga. What a let down! You can read my reply; ritareplies dated 01-02-10. ENJOY!
I really like SGU, but Sanctuary – honestly? The last three episodes had me hitting the FF button on my Tivo just so I could be finished with them.
It needs a good dollop of cancelation butter.
