Both CBS and NBC have launched new TV shows that revolve around smart blonde women who hold important government positions in Washington, DC. CBS’ Madam Secretary has already been renewed for a second season. What will happen to NBC’s State of Affairs? Will it be renewed or cancelled?
State of Affairs follows a top CIA analyst (Katherine Heigl) who assembles the President of the United States’ Daily Briefing (PDB), weighing the vital security issues that face the nation. She has a close personal relationship with the commander-in-chief (Alfre Woodard) as she was once engaged to the president’s now-deceased son. The rest of the cast of this dramatic thriller includes Adam Kaufman, Sheila Vand, Cliff Chamberlain, Tommy Savas, and David Harbour.
Taking over for NBC’s highly-rated series The Blacklist, State of Affairs debuted in November to a healthy 2.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 8.69 million viewers. It was a solid start that was no doubt aided by its strong lead-in The Voice. Some people were also possibly expecting to find a new episode of The Blacklist in the timeslot instead.
In week two, despite still having a strong lead-in, State of Affairs’ ratings dropped more than 36% to a 1.4 in the demo with 5.39 million. They rose up a bit in week three but have been falling ever since. Last week’s installment hit new series lows with a 0.7 in the demo and 3.62 million viewers.
Though NBC had high hopes for this series, State of Affairs is just not measuring up. The network is poised to finish airing the 13 episode season (there are four episodes remaining after tonight’s) but it’s hard to imagine that they’d consider renewing it for a second season with poor ratings like these.
NBC entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt recently said, “I’m disappointed in what it’s been doing [in the ratings] the last couple of weeks… It’s a show that I think is a really fine show, so I’m scratching my head a little bit about why we can’t get more people to be there for it.”
There’s still time for the numbers to improve but it doesn’t seem likely they’d be good enough to save the show. Hopefully the season finale will offer viewers some measure of closure to the ongoing storylines.
But, what do you think? Do you like the State of Affairs TV show? If you ran the network, would you cancel or renew the series for a second season? How would you improve this show if it was renewed?

please keep this show….a good one!
good show….a keeper
KEEP! KEEP! KEEP!
This is an awesome show. Its smart and it holds my attention. don’t cancel it!!
Great shows like this are mistakenly canceled too soon. It might be that the name of the show has a dual connotation. “State of Affairs” can mean either the inner workings, affairs, of the state department, or love affairs within the state department. There may have been more expectations of the latter. We saw a little of that in the first few episodes, then the romance portion fizzled proportionally with the ratings.
Perhaps more romance is the key to keep viewers hearts pounding on the ratings door
PLEASE KEEP !!! Donthe change anything.
I missed a few episodes because I thought it was aired on Tuesdays. But this show is the highlight of my week!
I like the show. Keep it.
Keep the show going! It’s great to have powerful women leading and the show keeps me wanting to watch more and more. Don’t cancel!
Please keep the show. I really enjoy this show and Blacklist. I DVR all of my tv shows because of my schedule, but these are my two favorite shows on television.
I just started watching this on the internet last week and I am hooked! I love it and would hate to see it cancelled! Please Keep it!
It takes ALOT for a TV show to hold my attention! Give the show a chance! KEEP IT! I agree, DVR recordings need to be counted in the ratings! NBC you always bail TOO SOON! Maybe that’s why your network is struggling in ratings…I’m always afraid to get invested in your new shows because you never give them a chance…
Folks for some reason are just not interested in a show that deals with the reality of life. Oh they will support all the stupid reality shows, not. I find it refreshing that NBC of all networks has a show with such a awesome actress as Alfre Woodard playing a black POTUS
with the nads to fight Islamic terrorism. This is as close as network TV will come to
Homeland.
Keep the show!
Love it!
Keep it on! its definitely a good show but i’m going to be completely honest… i watched the first one and was like okay it seems good… for some reason i lost interest on the 2nd episode i didn’t finish it. but after a 3 weeks i came back to the show caught up using on demand and have been watching it regularly ever since. I think it needs to be signed on for season two to even get a real good consistent rating to be sure. Things take awhile to get a following these days…
PS… your also trying to compete with Castle on ABC which has been on for a number of years and i have been watching that show from the beginning, and i don’t plan on stopping until its over for good. You may want to try a different time slot.
Would love to see it last for more than 13 episodes. FYI-I was a loyal NCIS:LA fan, but have not watched it once since I began watching this SOA! I don’t normally have time to Tivo or record, and come back to watch any show, but I did go to NBC website and watch last weeks show. Suggestion to NBC: try SOA in another time slot, that is not running against an established CBS fan favorite. As I said, I was loyal to NCIS so you have to assume that the remaining fans are also loyal. SOA would keep it’s… Read more »
