Last week, CBS renewed 11 TV shows for the 2016-17 season. Supergirl was not among them. With declining ratings, should the Monday night series be renewed for a second season on CBS? Should it be cancelled instead? Moved to The CW?
Supergirl revolves around Superman’s cousin, Kara Zor-El (Melissa Benoist). As a girl, she survived Krypton’s destruction by being sent to Earth where she was raised as a human. She kept her powers a secret and now, as an adult, works as an assistant at a big city media conglomerate. Kara’s existence becomes known to the world and she is enlisted by a super-secret agency to help protect the citizens from evil forces as Supergirl. The rest of the cast includes Calista Flockhart, Chyler Leigh, Mehcad Brooks, David Harewood, and Jeremy Jordan.
The ratings for this freshman series have not exactly been “super”. After a positive start back in October, the latest ratings are less than half of the premiere’s. It’s currently averaging a 1.73 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 7.9 million viewers. Last week’s episode hit a new low with a 1.29 in the demo with 6.0 million. Those are poor numbers for a CBS show.
CBS head Les Moonves recently said that he expected several of the new CBS shows to be renewed for second seasons. Still, they haven’t been renewed yet and things can change quickly in the TV industry, particularly as the network execs review pilots for next season.
Tonight’s crossover with CW’s The Flash should bring a bump in the ratings but that’s not expected to help the next week’s new installment’s numbers and there are only two more episodes in this season.
Given the ratings, Supergirl probably shouldn’t be renewed for a second season on CBS. The series could work well on The CW but that might mean that the show’s budget would have to be downsized and production moved to Vancouver, British Columbia — where Arrow, The Flash, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow are produced.
What do you think? Do you think Supergirl should be cancelled or renewed for a second season? Should it move to The CW or stay on CBS?
This is one of the few shows not too dark to watch with my kids. Like the ill-fated Green Lantern movie, today’s audiences just don’t care for fun happy shows. To get good ratings, the hero has to be miserable and tormented or people just don’t want to see it.
I’m sure if the old Christopher Reeves Superman was introduced today instead of the late 70’s it would be a bomb with audiences.
I’ve never seen such an awful Supergirl in my 48yrs on the planet! Has the CW lost their minds? CANCEL IT!! Horrible acting, writing, directing, & the list goes on. Focus on shows that really matter, & stop caving to the “tween-crowd.” At least they still have SUPERNATURAL!
Um, this show isn’t on The CW. Please read the article, it’s by CBS. You’re putting the blame on the wrong production company.
Like I said to another person here. CW stands for CBS and Warner Bros. They are joined networks meaning when you look at it CBS is the parents to CW.
I totally disagree. I grew up reading the comics and I think they are doing a fantastic job reintroducing a whole new modern day supergirl. BUT you will you can not please everyone. But to wish a show cancelled just because you dislike it is pretty immature for a 48yr old. Just change the channel and let the real fans enjoy it
So did I, & I loved them all, & this ridiculous show’s a sham! Immature, give me a break. Cancel the show. Keep the channel on, my mistake in networks! Apologies. Modern day, seriously? Like the new Wonder Woman too? How about we get a new Xena next? Point being??? Bye now:)
Be a big girl and change the channel. Tv does not revolve around the shows you like only. Like I said for 48 you are acting very immature. By the way We are getting a new Xena. lol They are already in the making. everything goes full circle just like when we were younger ours were newer also at one time. They older generation did not cry cancel it. lol. They let us enjoy our time. My family loves this show and so do my friends. You need to have an open mind and let this generation have their time… Read more »
NO body agrees with you… sorry
I agree. Everything she says is spot on.
You see. I’m not alone in this vast universe. Thanks, L. Take care.
Check your channel and station identification, because it is NOT CW that created this Super girl show, it is in fact CBS. If you actually read the article you would see that. In addition there was only speculation that people were making about CW possibly picking up this show due to the crossover with The Flash (which by the way is CW)
I do
First few episodes was not good as expected but after episode 6 this show grows so much i want season 2 of Supergirl.
Started watching Super Girl, only got through a few episodes, never got around to catching up. But watched The Flash crossover, which sparked my interest again to possibly catch up. Only reason I had watched was because of The Flash crossover, and because I watch several CW shows, including Arrow, The Flash, DC Legends of Tomorrow, and sometimes Super Natural. Perhaps if it were on CW and had crossovers with other CW shows I would be more inclined to regularly watch.
supergirl is my favorite hit show currently on television by far!!! please renew supergirl for a 2nd season on cbs!!! i watch it every week, and i plan to buy 2 copies of every dvd set of every season of supergirl on cbs,i can only hope and pray supergirl will remain on cbs for many seasons to come!!!!
Depends. If season 2 includes a musical episode, and/or singing, then definitely cancel the show. But if season 2 lacks a musical episode and/or singing, then definitely renew the show.
Why would it include a musical episode or singing?
“Why would it include a musical episode or singing?” I don’t know, as I don’t see how it would add to Supergirl’s evolution as a character. MB has expressed enthusiasm for one (http://www.cbs.com/shows/supergirl/news/1005116/supergirl-herself-would-love-to-do-a-musical-episode-/), but I’m hoping she was joking. Also, the show has often embraced bad ideas (such as episodes 6 and 7), so I could see the writers approving a musical episode. I will say that the show has had some great episodes (episodes 10, 4, 5, and 3 come to mind), as well as some OK ones (most of the rest other than 6, 7, and to some… Read more »
Please renew, my favorite show on Monday night. So much better than the bull **** they’re showing at the movies such as BvS.
Depends. If they’re planning singing and/or a musical episode for season 2, cancel it. If no musical and/or singing are planned, renew it.
This show is just starting to get good and with Barry being added that just makes it better. Supergirl should be renewed on CBS or moved to The CW but either way renewed.
Really interested for the new season.
I love the show! Please renew. It’s wholesome, entertaining, a great way to have a family night.
I like this show. I like anything Super…… (fill in the blank). But, change to another day.
Renewed Please !!!!!!
I love watching Supergirl. Please have the show renewed.
Supergirl deserves another chance.
