All good things must come to an end… eventually. Freeform confirms the fifth and final season of its Switched at Birth TV series will not premiere until 2017. A couple of weeks before Switched at Birth creator Lizzy Weiss announced the delay on Twitter, she also announced season five would be Switched at Birth‘s last, leaving the show effectively cancelled. This is the first time Freeform has addressed when the show, which ended its fourth season on a cliffhanger, would return.
Switched at Birth stars Katie Leclerc as Daphne Vasquez and Vanessa Marano as Bay Kennish, who were, as the title spells out, switched at birth. The cast also includes Constance Marie, D.W. Moffett, Lea Thompson, Lucas Grabeel, and guest stars Sean Berdy and Marlee Matlin. Weiss, Paul Stupin, and Linda Gase executive produce.
A family drama, Switched at Birth explores early adulthood, blended families, deaf culture, and includes scenes shot in American Sign Language. The series has won a Peabody Award as well as a Television Critics Association Award for Outstanding Achievement in Youth Programming, and an Imagen Award for Best Primetime Program.

The Peabody Award-winning drama series begins its fifth and final season – including the milestone 100th episode – in 2017. The upcoming season picks up from the cliffhanger finale with Daphne and Bay living in China. A mysterious call has them packing for home, where they try to settle back in, but ten months has brought some changes. Daphne finds herself in the midst of racial tensions at the university and witnesses the racism faced by her black friends Iris, Sharee, and new baseball star Chris, in an episode told solely from their perspectives. The 100th episode sees the return of Angelo Sorrento (guest star Gilles Marini) as a vision brought about by a young woman with an unexpected link to the Kennish/Vasquez families. The series is executive-produced by Lizzy Weiss, Paul Stupin and Linda Gase. The series stars Katie Leclerc, Vanessa Marano, Constance Marie, D.W. Moffett, Lea Thompson, Lucas Grabeel, with guest stars Sean Berdy and Marlee Matlin.

No this show cannot be canceled!!!! what are they thinking!!!! I am so emotionally connected to these characters, It’s like a plot for me to feel the heartbreak like Emmit and Bay breakup. I hate that I have to wait another year after that crazy cliffhanger. I hope Netflix will take this show pleaseeeee!!!!!
I am so upset about all of this news. I have been watching this since day one. You got rid of the Life of a teenager and I was upset but ok because I watched switched. Now you are letting that go. I am going to end up not watching any other shows because you keep doing this. Need TO KEEP THIS SHOW GOING!!! I love it.
I love Switched at birth im so sad to see the show cancelled and even more sad that i have to wait a whole year for season five! wish it could be sooner. This show always got me in my soft spot and has left me cry of happiness and sadness. I will be learning ASL!

I have been watching “Switched at Birth” since it first began. I just checked when the fifth season would start as I hadn’t heard anything, only to find out that it won’t be on at ALL in 2016!!!!! I am furious!! How can fans be made to wait for over a year since it last ended? And now, it’s being cancelled? Why the long wait then to have a finale……after that long, who’s gonna remember? End it if you must, but do it sooner to tie up loose ends. Why string us along?!

I am so in love with this show and it has honestly made me look at things in a different way I am really upset at the fact that it will no longer be aired on tv it was for sure my #1 favorite TV show of all time…PLEASE DON’T STOP THE SHOW!!!

I’ve been looking for the series to start season 5 and just saw that it is about to end…and a year away…seriously disappointed. If there’s a chance, don’t end it!!
I absolutely fell in love with Switched at Birth! I couldn’t quit watching it. It made me smile , cry, shake my head and even want to learn to learn ASL!! Please don’t end it, it’s such a great show.
This is my favorite show I was so disappointed to hear that there was not a firth season when I finished it but reading this makes it even worse because not only do we have to wait until 2017 but the whole time I will be watching it I will have the horrible thought of it ending in the back of my head. I think ending the show is a terrible idea.
I hate to see this I have been waiting on it to come back on. I love the way it bring hearing impair people to light. Wish it would go on.
Why cancel this show but keep making new seasons of Pretty Little Liars?? That show is repetitive, unlike switched at birth. You guys are making the wrong decision here. Making us wait until 2017 is absurd.
This is definitely NOT the right time to cancel the show! You have TONS of fans that absolutely love this show!! Please please please reconsider! I love this show and the fosters, so please try to keep this one going. It’s what got me to love ABC Family (Freeform) in the first place!
