It turns out that there won’t be a sixth season of the Switched at Birth TV show on Freeform. Series creator and executive producer Lizzy Weiss has confirmed that season five will be the end. She wrote, “This season of #SwitchedatBirth will be our final one. We are ending the show after an amazing 103 episodes with pride, love, and gratitude.”
Switched at Birth follows the lives of two teenage girls after it’s discovered that they ended up with the others’ families as babies at the hospital. The cast includes Vanessa Marano, Katie Leclerc, Lea Thompson, Constance Marie, Sean Berdy, D.W. Moffett, Lucas Grabeel, and Giles Marini.
The series debuted in June 2011, won a Peabody Award in 2013, and features several deaf and hard-of-hearing series regulars. The fourth season finished airing in October 2015 was down by 28% in both the 18-49 demographic and total viewership. The fifth and final season has yet to be scheduled and will apparently have just 10 episodes (93 installments have aired over the previous four seasons).
What do you think? Are you a fan of this series? Do you think the final season of Switched at Birth should have been longer? Would you have watched a sixth season?
I love the show but I think to many new cast members were used at different times. But I am sad it’s being canceled.
I enjoy the SAB but need more deaf casts. Bay signs better and better. Don’t hire more hearing non-signers. Bored me! Hire deaf casts from Spring Awakening. They are the best! Plus CODA Hilary and Stephanie! Cutie couple from Prom! I keep watching them but start to bore.. you need to spice the show more with deaf casts.
I loved this show during the first two seasons and a bit beyond. But tHere were (IMHO) some storylines that I felt were handled clumsily, and some character choices that, for me, RACED into melodrama. So at that point it became a matter of watching just enough to fill in the spaces. Plus there was one aspect that, admittedly, is totally a reflection of my own worldview but….the rejection of considering a cochlear implant for any MAIN character, the disdain for those who “deserted” the culture/community by wanting a different experience or to move through the world differently was just… Read more »
Emmett’s father received a cochlear implant, and he remained respected and loved. Plus, Daphne had a cochlear implant in an alternate reality, and she was successful with it. Travis told Emmett that he was considering getting a cochlear implant. If the show had continued, I had the impression that he may do so, because Travis is different from Emmett. He probably already would have had a cochlear implant, if his character had the kind of parental support that Emmett’s character has. On the show, it’s really only Melody who is against cochlear implants, and because she takes that stand, Emmett… Read more »
I am truly upset that season five will be the last season. I love this show so much. This show made me want to become an American Sign Language interpreter, in which I will continue in school this upcoming fall. This show is amazing, and a great family show that should not be canceled. I watched it every week, and even have the episodes recorded for my own needs. Truly disappointed but so excited for season five!!
I love the show! I watch it every week when it comes on! I know for a fact that ALL deafies across the world watches your show, WE ALL wants a show or 2 that has signs in them and we always enjoy the show cuz we understand and the show keeps our culture in it, I wished that you would NOT EVER cancel this show, this is really heart breaking, I was looking forward to watch many more shows to come through the years, it will NEVER be the same without you on Freeform. I love Sean Berdy! Will… Read more »
I love Switched at Birth and never miss tuning in. I am so sorry to see this series end. Best wishes to all the very talented actors and writers involved.
Lizzy Weiss has so much to be proud. Thank you for a brilliant run.
I am a big fan of this show. I think the last season should have more episodes, I was actually excited for this new season. It’s really sad to know that the fifth season is going to be the last one. This series shouldn’t end like this.
Yes, I think the fifth season should have been allowed the full 20 episodes. Yes, I would have watched a sixth season. I’m in the target demographic, and I never missed an episode. Neither do my family and friends. I watched Switched at Birth live, every time, and then, I watched it again and again on my DVR. I love this show, its focus on Deaf culture, Sean Berdy, Marlee Matlin, Daniel Durant, Nyle Dimarco, Stephanie Nogueras. Give the Bledsoe family and friends their own spin off. Their story is riveting. Freeform should keep this one on the air.
This is very unfortunate. In my opinion, The series is excellent and it is sad to hear it will be ending. I’m not really understanding these 10 episode seasons that shows are more frequently having, I wish switched at birth was given a full season at least. I just hope the series had enough time to produce a proper ending, j know filming had started in January so with the new coming just 2 months after I hope there was enough time to write a proper ending.
Don’t cancel it!! I am so tired of ABC family that is now FreeForm to cancel another series that I love. First the 9 Lives of Chile King, The Lying Game, then Twisted, Chasing Life, now Switched at Birth. Don’t make these shows that get us hooked then disappoint the viewers by canceling them.
its too bad this is a great show and a great family show, we need more of these. we also need more seasons.
I agree, we don’t have many family shows on tv anymore and that’s something we need in this world especially how things have been lately . Maybe that’s why abc family dropped the family in their name because they’re steering away from family related series, it’s a shame.
it was a good show. really liked it, but most of the abc fam shows never last more than 5 seasons anyway. have to remember not to get so involved with any new show the bring out
I lost interest during season 2. I found that the narcissistic spoiled daughter was too much.
I have loved Switched At Birth since it Frist started in 2011. I am very sad that this year which is the 5th season is the last season. I love they are coming back this year for a 5th season. But very sad this is the last season. I don’t think they should end this show after this year. I think they need to continue having Switched At Birth for a Season 6 and more seasons please. Please do not let this show end on just a a season 5. We need to see Daphne and Bays Brother have this… Read more »
please make more seasons
