TV show description:
This dramatic TV series is based on the book of the same name by Lily Koppel. It focuses on seven women who were key players behind some of the biggest events in American history. As America’s astronauts were launched on death-defying missions, the lives of their young wives were transformed — seemingly overnight — from military spouses to American royalty. As their celebrity rose, tragedy began to touch their lives and they rallied together.
Betty Grissom (JoAnna Garcia Swisher) is a small-town girl who’s been thrust into the spotlight. She says what she means and means what she says. Betty worked the night shift at Indiana Bell to put her husband and best friend Gus (Joel Johnstone) through engineering school and her unwavering support helps him to become the second American to fly in space.
The spouse of astronaut Scott Carpenter (Wilson Bethel) and a mother of four who attended college, Rene Carpenter’s (Yvonne Strahovski) time in the public eye awakens her to a higher calling in politics, civil rights, and women’s issues.
An intensely private person, Louise Shepard (Dominique McElligott) understands the image she’s expected to project to the public. She’s the calm, collected, and supportive spouse of Alan Shepard (Desmond Harrington). She always delivers and this earns her the nickname of “Lady Louise” from the other wives.
A pilot herself, Trudy Cooper (Odette Annable) is separated from her husband Gordon “Gordo” Cooper (Bret Harrison) when he gets selected to become an astronaut. Trudy agrees to reunite with him for the sake of his career during this pivotal time.
When her husband Deke (Kenneth Mitchell) is grounded early in the Mercury program, Marge Slayton (Erin Cummings) is forced to carve out her own identity in this tight knit community. Just as Deke came to oversee the training and assignment of the astronauts, “Mother Marge” stepped up to become the leader of the Astronaut Wives Club.
Despite a debilitating speech impediment, Annie Glenn (Azure Parsons) is the picture perfect American housewife. She’s athletic, cheerful, devoted to her family and sings in the church choir. Annie shines in the pages of LIFE magazine and her husband John (Sam Reid) is the first American to orbit the Earth.
The daughter of a Navy officer, Jo Schirra (Zoe Boyle) is the consummate military wife who knows the proper behavior in every circumstance. Jo shows up to functions with perfect pearls and gloves, but she also has a wry sense of humor — much like her husband Wally Schirra (Aaron McCusker), the prankster of the astronauts.
Episode #10 — Landing
It’s 1969, and Apollo 11’s historic moon landing is cause for worldwide celebration and a high point for the Astro-families. The wives are interviewed for a TV documentary on the space program, Gordo is passed over for the next mission, and Trudy faces some big decisions about her personal and professional future. Betty finds a powerful way to honor Gus’s legacy and advocate for change.
First aired: August 20, 2015.
What do you think? Do you like The Astronaut Wives Club TV show? Do you think it should have ended or been renewed for a second season?
Definitely renew!! I’m certain there is enough real-life material to keep the show going for years. The best show to come along since the ending of Mad Men and Breaking Bad!
I’ve really enjoyed this show. It has been fun to watch the women grow and form a wonderful sisterhood.
i love this show!!! please renew for another season.
This is such a great series, how could they even think it shouldn’t be renewed?!! This show is such a refreshing change from all of the medical and law enforcement type series. It also is packed with USA history which I experienced as a child and remember very well. It’s kind of fun to see the 1960’s cars, home decor and fashion. This show is definitely, 100% a “KEEPER”!!!
Definitely a keeper! Really enjoyed the historical aspects and the acting and writing are really good. I hope there will be additional seasons of this show.
I LOVE this series! Please renew it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please renew Astronauts wives club!! Love this show and based on history, awesome. Way better than all the dumb reality shows! AWC is a winner!! The monentum is gaining!
Please keep this show. It is more skillfully written and acted than most network television, most of which I will not watch. I would not characterize it as a soap — rather, just dramatically plotted and true to life. I don’t think it’s fair to compare AWC to cable. How could they cancel something this professional when programs as terrible as the bachelor/ette series keep multiplying! ?!
Strong writing – with humor within the drama – as well as performances, and great production design . Bravo to the whole AWC company ~ Wishing you many seasons to come. You’re a great bunch of artists.
Awesome show.!!!!! Keep it.
I think the show is great!!! Please don’t cancel it. I’m looking forward to Many seasons and hope it stays.
I’m not a big TV person , I just happened to be searching for something ‘Good’ to watch and ………
I found ‘The Astronauts Wives Club’ and I’m Glad I did. Give it time ( although I knew during the first episode )
That I finally found a good drama and with History too !!!!!! Please Don’t Cancel.

I hope I am not cynical about this show. I happen to enjoy it and look forward to it. I would like to see another season happen.
I think it should be cancelled
I couldn’t agree more. Example, if you watch the HBO period drama Masters of Sex, you don’t think about it being 60 years ago, it just is. With AWC, it comes across as them “acting” like their back 50+ years ago. It might be the sets, direction better known actors, or that one centers about fewer people and the other being more of a soap about a larger group of people. Obviously, both are dramatized for television. I’ve given AWC three tries and end up being on the computer more than watching it. I don’t see a season 2, or… Read more »
I liked it pretty well, but I’m not expecting much beyond soap opera.
It was a bit of an anachronism to hear the Drums’ “Obama/I Wanna Go Surfing” song as the astronauts ran into the ocean almost 50 years earlier.
