Wilkin Brattle (Lee Jones) can now beat his sword into a plowshare, since there will not be a second season of The Bastard Executioner TV show. FX has cancelled the Tuesday night drama after one season of ten episodes.
According to Deadline, creator Kurt Sutter, who also plays the Dark Mute character, knew the 14th century period drama would not return for season two, when he filmed the season one and series finale.
Deadline reports Sutter took out ads (below) in the trades, to thank the cast, crew, and the network. Said cast includes: Jones, Sutter, Stephen Moyer, Matthieu Charneau, Katey Sagal, Flora Spencer-Longhurst, Sam Spruell, Darren Evans, Danny Sapani, Timothy V. Murphy, Sarah White, Sarah Sweeny, Ethan Griffiths, and Ross O’Hennessy.
According to Deadline, Sutter did not break the bad news to the cast at the time, as the decision was not then final, and he did not want cancellation news to affect production. Last week, star Katy Sagal admitted she was not sure if there would be a second season.
As of episode nine, which aired Tuesday, November 10, 2015, The Bastard Executioner was not faring well in the ratings. Its to-date season average ratings in the 18-49 demographic was a mere 0.45, with a total average audience size of 1.26 million viewers. Dateline mentions that the ratings were not high enough, considering the cost of shooting on location, in Wales.
This show has been added to the growing list of shows that won’t be back next season.
What do you think? Do you like FX’s The Bastard Executioner TV show? Do you think it should have been cancelled? Would you have watched a second season?
I am very disappointed there won’t be another season. Big mistake i think. You should reconsider that.
I’m disappointed the series was canceled. It started slow because you needed to get to know all the characters and now I know the characters and it’s canceled. Sad.
I loved this show, found it by accident but watched all the episodes.
Wow! Just when everything seemed to be getting good! I have watched the whole first season and even got a few others to watch it as well, it really is a shame to have it end before they even really had a chance to get started. I have seen some absolutely ridiculous shows that get better time slots with extremely poor writing and somehow, a show as well written and acted as this gets dropped? I’m not really sure what others are watching but I can assure you that given a chance, this show would have found a far larger… Read more »
What a mistake to cancel this series! I am so disappointed. It took season one to develop the characters and just when the viewers are truly engaged you cancel the series. Please.bring it back for a season 2!!!!!!!
A truely wonderful original show, well acted with a compelling storyline. Very sad to see it go. It just needs more time to find its audience.
So disappointed!!! Just when it started coming together!!! I agree!! It wasn’t given enough time to prove itself!!! 🙁
It saddens me that a beautifully done show like this, with so much potential is cancelled while a show like Reign remains on the air.
I will miss this show. Yes, it was violent, bloody, and naked. The plot wasn’t predictable, and the characters were memorable. I knew where I was going to be sitting every Tuesday night, waiting for my fix. I do thank Kurt for tying up loose ends for us, and for kindly not letting us hang. It seems as though everyone made their peace with their fellow characters for once. You know, I think people who automatically record all their favorite shows, are the ones that kill them. Aren’t the ratings based upon who tunes in to watch the initial airing?… Read more »
Hi StoneBunny. The problem is there are too many show on at the same time to watch all you like in real time. But I catch your drift. Basically does anyone know why the 18 to 49 crowd is the most important? Is it because there is hard evidence those ages buy the most from advertisers? Thank you.
I agree with what the others have said. I too loved this show. Such a change from the moronic other shows on tv. I think Hollywood tends to cancel shows far too early. Sorely disappointed. This type of show needs the time to develop its characters and story line.
Really am shocked…Unfortunately.
I’m disappointed that there will be no more episodes. Please reconsider and bring this show back.
I, for one, am very disappointed. While I didn’t think anything could quite live up to the addictive ‘Sons,’ I thoroughly enjoyed this show. I’ve always had an interest in the Middle Ages, and Kurt Sutter and team brought their usual mix of great plotting and writing- as well as a cast that seemed so suited to their roles. Having gotten hooked on Sons of Anarchy, I went back to binge on all seasons of The Shield, another Sutter effort. Also great stuff. Considering the crap that will likely replace this time slot, I am increasingly dismayed at how difficult… Read more »
LOVED this show!!!! Looked forward to it every week as i appreciate period shows/movies…such a break from all the cop shows, canned laughter sitcoms and moronic reality tv. PLEASE bring it back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not the first time Hollywood got it wrong, this was a good show that wasn’t given the time to proove itself and should be reconsidered. It’s to bad that Hollywood is run by people who only know how to be PC.
We love the show. I’m disappointed it won’t be back
