Tonight marks the last episode of The Event for 2010. NBC plans to relaunch the series in three months, on February 28th, after letting their new series The Cape have the timeslot. Is it a risky move? Not really. Ultimately, they don’t have much choice.
The Event follows Sean Walker (Jason Ritter), a young man who’s investigating the mysterious disappearance of his girlfriend. He slowly begins to uncover the biggest cover-up in the history of the United States. Others in the cast include Sarah Roemer, Laura Innes, Ian Anthony Dale, Scott Patterson, Clifton Collins Jr., Taylor Cole, Lisa Vidal, Bill Smitrovich, Zeljko Ivanek, and Blair Underwood.
The series debuted in September to decent ratings with a 3.6 in the 18-49 demo and 10.88 million total viewers. That’s a healthy sampling but, considering all of the promotion that NBC put behind it, the programmers were likely disappointed by its third place rank in the timeslot.
While some viewers clearly love the show, more than half who watched the first episode have already lost interest. The Event has been losing viewers, sometimes as much as 15 or 20% in one week, and to date has never shown an increase week-to-week in the demo. The most recent installment garnered just a 1.7 rating in the demo and 5.19 million viewers.
You can blame the network for not doing a better job of promoting The Event but clearly there’s a problem with the series when people who already watch don’t feel compelled to return week after week.
Will this February “relaunch” help? Based on recent TV history, the answer is no. Just look at V and FlashForward. People who were interested in The Event have either already tried it and stuck around or given up on it. Those who haven’t watched previously are very unlikely to give a try because they assume that they’ve missed too much backstory already. On top of that, when the show returns, the ratings will likely be lower than what they are now. By the time The Event returns in February, many casual fans will have already gotten involved with other shows.
The one thing that The Event has going for it is the fact that it’s on NBC. The peacock network continues to struggle and The Event is currently the fifth most-watched scripted program on the network. If things go as expected, it will drop much lower on the list next year. Still, with the exception of The CW, NBC is the only network that would consider giving this series more time. They’ll surely let all 22 episodes air.
The Event returns on Monday, February 28th and will have 12 more original episodes to air at that point. Will there be a second season? We’ll have to wait and see but hopefully the producers will plan ahead and not end the show without any resolution.
What do you think? Does The Event have a chance for survival? What could NBC do to save this show? Anything?

I like the show. Bring it back.
There was way too much backstory in this show before the end of the first episode. I LOVE shows like this, but even with a rewindable DVR and the ability to watch an episode 200,000,000 times, I just couldn’t keep up. One second it’s current time, another it’s 30 years ago, then it jumps to five seconds from next Tuesday. I watched the last two episodes twice (each), *thought* I finally got what was going on and who knew what when. Then POOF it’s gone for three months. EPIC FAIL. “The Event” should have been a major motion picture. It’s… Read more »
On a related note, the premiere of “The Cape” is minutes from my writing this, and as much as I want to see this show, it’s on NBC.
It WILL suffer the same fate as all the shows I previously mentioned. NBC needs to return to the format they had the most success with. SITCOMS.
Period.
“The Event” must come back!!!!! My whole family loves it. PLEASE don’t cancel it.
I LOVE THE EVENT. EVER SINCE THE ENDING OF ”24” TV SERIES. I HAD NO INTEREST IN ANY NEW TV SERIES, UNTIL THE EVENT CAME ALONG. CAN’T WAIT FOR IT TO AIR AGAIN. DONT UNDERSTAND WHY SOME SAY RATINGS ARE NOT THAT GOOD. IT BEATS WATCHING THOSE TV REALITY SHOWS WHICH I DESPISE.
I love the show and have been so disappointed by the fact that it simpy disappeared from its time slot… so looked forward to seeing it every week and hope it will be saved. Thought it was very well cast.
My 12 yr old son and I love it! Unfortunately the time slot is a little late, so we watch it On Demand. We can’t wait until Tuesday after he gets home from school to watch it!
My husband and I love the show. Personally think the interaction between boy and girlfriend drags, and the camera lingers on the blank look on her face much too many times. Actually, both of those characters were mis-cast. For the rest of the cast, they are wonderful. The president, vp, aliens, all perfectly cast. We had fun at first trying to ‘guess’ where the aliens were from…I was hoping for a universe existing side by side with ours. NBC should have made it a two-hour 8 part episode with ending.
As I scann the channels on tv I am bombarded with “reality, unscripted, beach patrol, street beat, cops, customs, talkshow trash,I say is thier any shows out thier with imagination, totally fictiojn.
I looked forward to Monday nights to see what would unfold in the tv show The Event. I do hope it makes a good comeback in Feb and I cannot wait until Feb 28th to see whatis going ro happen. Please keep the show going it isvery good. Sincerly Karen from Lancaster, Pa
I have a feeling it will go to the wayside like all the other NBC series. like Heros and Surface. What is it with NBC why can they let the shows go on. The get you hooked and then take the show off the air for no reason. I like unusual tv series. Please don’t cancel The Event. Keep in on the air
I liked this show. IT BEATS any reality tv which I despise!!!!!
This is one of the few shows that both my husband and I love to watch together. We didn’t miss an episode, rescheduling things around the time slot so we wouldn’t miss it. Sad to hear it slipped in the ratings…while I’d like to see it return before February 28, I’m glad that it’s returning!
I looked forward to the show each Monday. Had it automatically recorded each week. When NBC first began to advertise it, I thought they were finally coming around to compete with FOX.
i really enjoyed the show. it started slow but it got better. i cant wait to see more
I love the show have been very disappointed it hasn’t been on can’t wait until feb
