Third time’s a charm — though not for Greg Behrendt. In the third syndication cancellation in as many weeks, the Tribune group has cancelled freshman The Greg Behrendt Show.
The “self-help” talk show debuted in syndication on September 12, 2006 and was hosted by stand-up comedian and best-selling author Greg Behrendt. Each episode featured Behrendt attempting to change their lives in some way — from cheating boyfriends to lifestyle makeovers. (You can hear one guest’s experience via The Hollywood Podcast.)
The Sony Pictures Television-produced show was cancelled, like most, due to low viewership. In its four months, the “self-help” talk show attracted an average of only 880,000 households (0.8 rating) in daytime. It was tied with the similarly challenged The Megan Mullally Show that will go off the air at the end of this month.
The Behrendt cancellation may also be due to soft sales at the recent syndication show in Vegas as well as Tribune’s desire to sign up for the new The Steve Wilkos Show from NBC Universal. The Wilkos show will offer a different brand of “help” — more along the lines of the Jerry Springer variety. Wilkos was actually a security guard and sometimes replacement for Springer on The Jerry Springer Show for ten years.
The staff of The Greg Behrendt Show was reportedly told of the decision yesterday and production is expected to continue for the immediate future. A mix of original and rerun episodes will likely air until at least May.
I’ll be honest. I wasn’t very taken in by his book, and I think he’s trying to milk the success he got from Sex and the City. Truth is, I enjoy his style and his candor a lot more than Dr. Phil, who probably has no good business doing professional counseling since he abandoned the “real work” many years ago. He’ll be missed; he’s a good cup-of-coffee in the morning kind of show.
I’m very disappointed in the cancellation of the show. Though I think that Greg can use some better writers for the material presented, he is a breath of fresh air: sincere, quick, intelligent, funny, and truly helpful. I hope his talents will be better used elsewhere, and in a more widely watched time slot.
I found his show refreshing and honest. I looked forward to that hour each day and never missed a show. Why do the networks keep the lousy shows on and cancel something like this? When will things change for viewers like me? There’s nothing left to watch that makes any sense anymore. The view with “Rosie” and “Jerry Springer” are obnixious. If the viewing audience has sunk this low what does this say about us. This cancelation really stinks.
Dude, whats a comedian doing giving advice? This show shouldnt have ever begun!
I’m SSSSSOOOOO glad they cancelled this crap-load called a show. Greg seems like a cocky prick, and his “styled” mullet doesn’t do him good either.
He’s no different from any other unqualified dufus they give a talk show. He points out to obvious and the people stupid enough to walk it and like, eat the crap right up.
It’s unfortunate that the show is being cancelled, but it’s not like Greg doesn’t have anything else to fall back on, he’s a comedian and author, so he has other avenues.
Talk shows annoy me mostly because it’s hard to tell what is staged and what isn’t. I’ve only seen the show a handful of times, and from what I saw it’s a million times better than the other shows on TV like Jerry Springer.
Best wishes to Greg on whatever he does next.
The only reason the ratings are low cuz its during daytime tv. I love this show. And it sure is better than watching half the bullsh*t they have on tv.
There is no accounting for taste – How about this – cancel that hack Megan and leave Greg to take HER audience.
This guy is actually helping people and the jerry springer shows are more akin to audience types who sat in the Roman Collusium cheering for a thumbs down. In this case, to watch people get eaten by their own personal Lions and Tigers.
I remain disgusted and SHAME on you jerks for kicking Greg Behrendt after only FOUR MONTHS!
UP YOURS SONY!
Greg Seems like an Awesome guy. It took a few shows…but I really got to like him. It’s so refreshing to hear a guy say great things about his own marriage and be so upbeat about helping others. He is down to earth, smart, sensitive and throw in decent looking as a bonus. He IS the Whole package. Wish there were more out there like him. A true shame to replace his show with more trailer trash tv.
I am sad to see the GB show get cancelled. I thought he was a little ‘dude’ in the beginning, but once I got used to him, I really liked him. Its true he sometimes gave simple advice, but he was always real. Plus he is HOT!!! I have seen his Comedy Central shows and he is hilarious.
He has a lot of strength and I am sure he will find another venue for his talents, although he will be missed in my home! Love ya Greg!
Stupid decision to cancel the show. This host is extremly appealing. Secure male, comfortable expressing emotions and sensitive issues. Rare as hell
I love your show. On March 15, 2008 you did a show on arguments. I was able to see the whole show, but my husband didn’t. This could save our marriage. How do I get a copy of the show?
Fabulous show…the fact that it is getting cancelled isn’t surprising considering the state that the US is currently in…I guess he wasn’t violent enough in conversation, sexual enough to tittilate the audience. What was he…so refreshing…so adorable and so talented. He was kind and loving and was devoting his show to helping people better themselves. It seems these are not popular virtues these days. I will miss him terribly. Meg
im glad this show was cancelled. it was appealing to women ONLY
I’m sorry to see the show ending. It’s hard these days to be on a top rated show and try to come up for new ideas for future programming. Hopefully Greg Behrendt will find something else to do along the way.
Good Luck!! 🙂
