The Leftovers has returned to HBO with its second season, and the man behind the series has been out a lot in recent weeks talking about the new season and what he has planned for the future.
Fans of this HBO series can relax a bit and not worry about it being cancelled too much. It appears that HBO and Damon Lindelof both see a future for the series – a future that could take the series through five seasons.
Before season two premiere, Lindelof spoke about what he had in mind for the series in an interview with Assignment X. He is definitely looking ahead to season three, but HBO is interested in his ideas for more, according to him.
“I’ve adopted the [Vince] Gilligan model. I think a show like LOST, that was so mystery-based, it required a certain degree of planning ahead, having the answers to the mysteries, understanding that there might be some improvisation along the way, but it would have been irresponsible to proceed without a road map, even if you decided to deviate from it. THE LEFTOVERS, I’m much more comfortable saying, “We’re going to take it one episode at a time.” The collaborative nature of the show, the other writers, the directors, certainly the actors all have a fair amount of input, but we watch what they do and it inspires us. But I do think that, particularly when we told HBO that we wanted to move the show geographically in its second season, they were like, ‘Is this something that you’re going to do every year?’ Like, ‘Is it going to be THE WIRE, where Season 2 is the docks and then Season 3 is Amsterdam and Season 4 is the school and Season 5 is the press?’ And we essentially had to say to them, ‘Well, if there was a Season 3, it would probably be this.'”
Of course, HBO would need to pick up the series for a third season and more beyond that for Lindelof’s vision to play out. Season two premiered with a huge drop from the series premiere last year, but the last episode picked up big numbers from the previous two episodes. HBO will likely take a look at The Leftovers ratings as the season continues to progress.
Would you watch five seasons of The Leftovers? Tell us what you think.
This is one of the best shows I’ve ever seen and have been so interested in! FIVE STARS for 5 seasons easily!!
The reason I subscribe to HBO is for “The
Leftovers” and “Real Time”. Please HBO, don’t cancel half of the reason I subscribe to you.
Love this show. Not predictable and I think that’s a key to holding my interest. Keep going, please!
Please HBO I implored not miss the best series of fall #renewedpls
In this house we’re hooked on The Leftovers. If it doesn’t go a few more seasons at least, I’ll have to have a serious talk with HBO.
Absolutely! When I saw the “LAST 3 EPISODES” at the end of this week’s episode I panicked. This story line is too good to wrap up in only 2 or 3 seasons.
I am very glad anonymous is gone. Clearly they have picked up viewers as the second season has progressed and I don’t work for the show or HBO I LOVE THIS SERIES AND WANT MORE! I love Kevin and Hope for his resurrection!
Yes. Please please please. PlEaSE?!?!?!
Begging.
I absolutely would watch up to season 5 and beyond! This show is like no other it’s fricken amazing. It Really makes you think! I have not missed one single episode and will be very sad to see it end Please don’t cancel it! There’s still so much more to explore
I love the Leftovers, hope HBO keeps the show alive!!!
I have watched The Leftovers since the first season! And like Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead, I can’t wait for next episode. This series asks the relevant questions without giving too much away, and when it does it makes sense as it’s relevant to a plot that is more focused on exploring each character, leaving just enough to want another taste of it. As opposed to Lost series which started great but ended with a disappointing resolution and some unanswered questions, The Leftovers gives just enough away to make you come back for more, and I a good… Read more »
love the leftovers..hope they don’t cancel
Yes!!!! Please bring it back!!! Me and everyone at work love it and want to see more!!!!
Absolutely, this is an amazing show with amazing actors…. I now watch The Leftovers first then The walking Dead…..
Same here!
The Leftovers is a very high quality and very well acted. show. The story lines are eclectic and unique. It seems like the Leftovers is less popular among the general US Population than some shows such as Game of Thrones and the Walking Dead, however I feel that it appeals to the Highest Possible Common Denominator. The character Development is so well done that one can truly believe in and care about each character. The mystery involving “The Departure” is spell binding. HBO should consider continuing this series even if it doesn’t have the highest ratings. Sometimes, it is important… Read more »
“I feel that it appeals to the Highest Possible Common Denominator.” Yeah, like the remark Patti made in last night’s show in regards to the cop guy traveling to Egypt, doing what was necessary to obtain a guarded chalice so that he could fill it up with his own *** and drink it. Sorry, can’t recall the X-cop guy’s name at the moment, guess I’m not that connected to the characters. Anyway, was that whole exchange in the car really necessary? Is that the fabulous spellbinding writing everyone is always talking about? Did the episode really depend on that exchange… Read more »
You have missed the history of patty and the cop…. Its much more than that coment. I understand your frustration but for viewers her horrid sarcasm makes sence….. Sorry it is not of your liking but it beats a lot of crappy reality shows that only portray people trying to be the most promiscuous they can, or exalting insignificant qualities.
Great job HBO
I’ve seen every episode since day one last season. Why does everyone answer in generalities instead of pinning down what they say I missed or don’t understand? Again, 6 in 10 viewers have crap canned this series. They quit watching…what don’t you understand about that? Seriously, you all must work for the show and fear for your jobs. This is lunacy.
You’re seriously not getting it. Everything you described are intense psychological issues presented as subtext.
I’ve said that I don’t get it several times to several posters & asked that they explain the show to me and the 6 out of 10 viewers that have quit watching it this season but not one has done so. Maybe you will? Doubt it because you don’t have a clue either. It’s ridiculous and hopefully this will be the last season. “Newsroom” (I think it was) was a dog also & got canceled. I love HBO but this one is a loser, I know it, they know it and so does the 61% of viewers that gave up… Read more »
Seriously? I think you are just complaining about this show because you obviously can’t think abstract enough to figure out the plot.
its typical of Patti to say something like that. It seems like maybe you have not been paying attention.
Very well said! I agree completely.
