The Leftovers has returned to HBO with its second season, and the man behind the series has been out a lot in recent weeks talking about the new season and what he has planned for the future.
Fans of this HBO series can relax a bit and not worry about it being cancelled too much. It appears that HBO and Damon Lindelof both see a future for the series – a future that could take the series through five seasons.
Before season two premiere, Lindelof spoke about what he had in mind for the series in an interview with Assignment X. He is definitely looking ahead to season three, but HBO is interested in his ideas for more, according to him.
“I’ve adopted the [Vince] Gilligan model. I think a show like LOST, that was so mystery-based, it required a certain degree of planning ahead, having the answers to the mysteries, understanding that there might be some improvisation along the way, but it would have been irresponsible to proceed without a road map, even if you decided to deviate from it. THE LEFTOVERS, I’m much more comfortable saying, “We’re going to take it one episode at a time.” The collaborative nature of the show, the other writers, the directors, certainly the actors all have a fair amount of input, but we watch what they do and it inspires us. But I do think that, particularly when we told HBO that we wanted to move the show geographically in its second season, they were like, ‘Is this something that you’re going to do every year?’ Like, ‘Is it going to be THE WIRE, where Season 2 is the docks and then Season 3 is Amsterdam and Season 4 is the school and Season 5 is the press?’ And we essentially had to say to them, ‘Well, if there was a Season 3, it would probably be this.'”
Of course, HBO would need to pick up the series for a third season and more beyond that for Lindelof’s vision to play out. Season two premiered with a huge drop from the series premiere last year, but the last episode picked up big numbers from the previous two episodes. HBO will likely take a look at The Leftovers ratings as the season continues to progress.
Would you watch five seasons of The Leftovers? Tell us what you think.
Go for the 10 seasons! I love love love it! By far the best series for a very long time on TV. Roll on series 3!
Yes. Have a definite Love-Hate relationship with the show, but the actors are amazing and I love the music. Would definitely watch it.
The leftovers is most definitely the best show on television of late and to see it canceled would be a crime. I love a show that makes you think, and want to re-watch the episodes over and over. The leftovers does exactly that.

Great show, keep it going
Definitely!!! Best show on tv today!
Brilliant and thought-provoking television, The Leftovers catches and holds my attention from start to finish every episode. I am a30-something in a major metropolitan area (Phoenix), and have been watching since Season 1.
They balance character development with plot, and the show manages to hit a variety of dramatic emotional notes without insulting my intelligence.
Please don’t cancel The Leftovers!
This show takes a lot of deep thinking and finding meaning, your own meaning, in the symbols and signs. For that reason, I love it! It’s a heartbreaking story for the characters and the mysteries that we all face in life. We all ask ourselves, “what is the purpose of life?” Some of us do not, cannot, deviate from our beliefs related to this, others weave in and out of faith, and still others take things at face value and do not apply faith or signs. It’s the story that humanity goes through and it is fascinating. I really hope… Read more »
I would watch however many season they can get. My favorite HBO show since TD season 1 that is. Keep it coming!
I absolutely adore the Leftovers! It’s like no show out there, so imaginative & mysterious! I pretty much got everyone I talk to hooked on it, and we all would absolutely watch five seasons or more!
I will absolutely watch future episodes. Iove all of the weird stuff and I want to see it played out. However I don’t want it to be like American Horror Story – I want a seamless stream of core characters.
I would absolutely watch the Leftovers for 5 seasons! I love this show. The mystery kills me but I want more. The actors all have made this show exceptional to watch. Thinking in straight lines leaves nothing to the imagination, the creators and writers are definitely thinking outside the realm of typical TV. Awesome show!
This show better not get cancelled it is my Bae
