CBS recently unveiled their newest Thursday night sitcom — The McCarthys. How is doing? Is it a comedy hit or a flop? Will it last or could it be cancelled soon?
The McCarthys revolves around sports-crazed Irish-American family from Boston. Athletically-challenged and gay son Ronny (Tyler Ritter) plans to finally move away to start his own life. Those plans are thrown into turmoil when his basketball coach dad (Jack McGee) offers him a job as assistant coach — much to the dismay of Ronny’s siblings. The sitcom also stars Laurie Metcalf, Jimmy Dunn, Joey McIntyre, and Kelen Coleman.
The series debuted on October 30th to a 1.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 8.08 million viewers. Last week’s dropped to a 1.5 in the demo and 6.67 million.
While those might be acceptable numbers for a sitcom on NBC, they are disappointing for one on CBS — particularly on Thursday nights. The show’s poor ratings are also likely hurting Elementary which airs at 10pm.
After two episodes, The McCarthys is averaging a 1.6 rating with 7.38 million viewers. For comparisons, The Crazy Ones was cancelled last season after averaging a 2.1 rating with 8.32 million.
Unless the ratings pick up fast, it’s certain that The McCarthys will be cancelled after a short season of 13 episodes. Today, the network ordered two additional scripts, a sign they aren’t giving up on the series yet.
If the ratings keep dropping, it seems likely that the network will pull the series and replace it with reruns for the immediate future — and eventually replace it with Mike & Molly or another sitcom.
What do you think? Do you like The McCarthys? Do you think it should be cancelled soon or given more time?
It is FUNNY.. It isn’t dirty like some, it isn’t violent like some, it is JUST PLAIN FUNNY!!!! It saddens me to say that is why it will more then likely get cancelled. I HOPE THAT IT STAYS ON THE AIR!! We need more GOOD, CLEAN, FUNNY shows!!
PLEASE DON’T CANCEL IT!!
Cancel it. Worse than the Millers.
I like the show. The whole cast. Something seems to be missing though. But I do like the show
I think it is the funniest show on TV. Even funnier than the Big Bang Theory, which is unfunny!
Whoever thinks this show is NOT funny, you are so wrong. It is hysterical. Laurie Metcalf is amazing. I hope you do not cancel.
I love this show! Please don’t cancel it!!
I love it ! It’s laugh out loud funny . My husbands said they were ” Pretty Damn funny “

Take that stupid Miller’s off and make more of these
Great cast
I love this show, please don’t cancel it!
Love this show!!!! I wish networks would give new shows more than 1 season to prove how good they are. Please do not cancel this one CBS.
Poor writing is killing this show. It’s a shame too as I like most of the cast. I will be very surprised if this show is renewed. I won’t watch another episode.
When people criticize the “writing” specifically, when talking about the McCarthys, I am always a little surprised and then curious about what they think is “good writing” in modern network sitcoms (not hour-longs or cable shows – that is a totally different kind of writing and is not comparable). I am just wondering, because, compared to MANY other current sitcoms, some of which are considered “hits”, I actually think the writing on this is very good. The writers on this show come from Friends, The Office, Modern Family and other shows that won Emmys for writing, so it’s not like… Read more »

Love this show! It is laugh out loud funny!!
Love the McCarthys! I don’t generally like sitcoms, but this one gets me laughing out loud. The characters are becoming better defined with time. I hope CBS gives it a chance.
I love “The McCarthys” it is hilarious! Please don’t cancel this show, I beg you. I think it’s the second best thing that CBS has put out since “The Big Bang Theory”!
