CBS recently unveiled their newest Thursday night sitcom — The McCarthys. How is doing? Is it a comedy hit or a flop? Will it last or could it be cancelled soon?
The McCarthys revolves around sports-crazed Irish-American family from Boston. Athletically-challenged and gay son Ronny (Tyler Ritter) plans to finally move away to start his own life. Those plans are thrown into turmoil when his basketball coach dad (Jack McGee) offers him a job as assistant coach — much to the dismay of Ronny’s siblings. The sitcom also stars Laurie Metcalf, Jimmy Dunn, Joey McIntyre, and Kelen Coleman.
The series debuted on October 30th to a 1.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 8.08 million viewers. Last week’s dropped to a 1.5 in the demo and 6.67 million.
While those might be acceptable numbers for a sitcom on NBC, they are disappointing for one on CBS — particularly on Thursday nights. The show’s poor ratings are also likely hurting Elementary which airs at 10pm.
After two episodes, The McCarthys is averaging a 1.6 rating with 7.38 million viewers. For comparisons, The Crazy Ones was cancelled last season after averaging a 2.1 rating with 8.32 million.
Unless the ratings pick up fast, it’s certain that The McCarthys will be cancelled after a short season of 13 episodes. Today, the network ordered two additional scripts, a sign they aren’t giving up on the series yet.
If the ratings keep dropping, it seems likely that the network will pull the series and replace it with reruns for the immediate future — and eventually replace it with Mike & Molly or another sitcom.
What do you think? Do you like The McCarthys? Do you think it should be cancelled soon or given more time?
My husband and I finally have a show we watch together! Please keep giving this show a try!! We love it!!!!
This is the second time I have replied….My friends and I love this show, the family is endearing and the fact that the daughter is pregnant without a father opens the door for the writers to do so many funny and meaningful situations that are interesting and especially in todays world, I believe it would be a terrible loss if it is cancelled. A better time slot would also be helpful to the ratings
This is my favorite show on TV! I record every
Episode and watch them over and over. Please
Give it another season!
The mccarthys are too good for it to cancel
I really enjoy this show. It is different from all other shows. It was a great idea! I think it needs a season 2.
My family looks so forward to the McCarthy’s. There is just not many good tv programs. Two & A Half Men has gotten so ridiculous. Other shows have become stale. We need McCarthys back on air, please!
I will cry if u cancel this show… this is the best show on tv since big bang theory came out. u have to give it more than 1 or 2 seasons to get popular!!!!!!!!
Do Not Cancel this one show that I can share with my family
I like this show, it’s funny, you should give it a chance, you’re to quick to cancel shows.
Please DO NOT cancel.
I love this show it has such possibilities to grow not like some of the tired unpalatable jokes that are the same over and over again in most of the current comedies. I want to see what happens when Jackie has her Baby. I love the twins and the gay brother is so great to watch. Jackie is adorable and I love watching her .
LOVE this show!!! The Christmas episode with the “Red Sox Swap” was hysterical. I hope they give this show a better time slot so more people will get to see it.
Please don’t cancel The Mcarthys…It is my favorite show.
This show is hilarious! Hope you will be able to keep it on! Thanks!
