CBS has pulled the plug on one of their family comedies but it’s not the one you’d expect. They haven’t cancelled The McCarthys yet but have dropped The Millers after four airings into its second season.
Set in Leesburg, Virginia, The Millers follows a local TV news reporter (Will Arnett) who’s been hiding his recent divorce from his parents. When they hear the news, his dad (Beau Bridges) his mom (Margo Martindale) are inspired to separate and each move in with their kids. The rest of the sitcom’s cast includes J.B. Smoove, Jayma Mays, Nelson Franklin, Lulu Wilson, and Sean Hayes.
Debuting last fall, The Millers aired on Thursday nights and greatly benefitted from having The Big Bang Theory as a lead-in. The comedy’s ratings were very good — but a large percentage of viewers tuned out between the two programs. It averaged a 2.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 10.9 million viewers.
This season, CBS moved the sitcom to Monday nights where it has 2 Broke Girls as a lead-in. Despite the addition of Sean Hayes to the cast, it’s been struggling in that timeslot and hasn’t been helping new drama Scorpion. It’s currently averaging a 1.7 rating with 7.28 million — a season-to-season decline of more than 30%.
The cast and crew of The Millers will reportedly finish filming one more episode before shutting down production. A new episode is scheduled for this Monday night but, depending on the ratings, it may be pulled after that. Reruns of The Big Bang Theory performed well in the 8:30pm timeslot before Millers returned.
CBS has the fifth season of Mike & Molly waiting in the wings but will likely wait until after the holidays to give it a proper launch.
It’s been a particularly bad season for new sitcoms thus far. Bad Judge and A to Z were cancelled on NBC while Selfie and Manhattan Love Story have been canned by ABC. Mulaney on FOX is sure to be cancelled and The McCarthys is sure to be dropped by CBS as well. Only ABC’s newbie Black-ish is doing well.
What do you think? Do you like The Millers? Do you think it should have been moved back to Thursdays?
I liked season one, but Sean Hayes ordering a coffee? Not funny.
This is ridiculous. The Miller’s was a great show, everyone I talk to loved it. You may recall originally the network geniuses we’re going to pull the Big Bang Theory early on too, the only thing that saved it then was the writer’s strike. What morons they are to cancel the show without giving it a chance, so dumb! Anything we can do to bring it back?
One of the true comedies on television cancelled!! Why? CBS had a diamond in the rough with The Millers, but I guess it wasn’t vulgar enough, like Mom, Mike n Molly, etc. my family and I really enjoyed a rather clean sitcom where I didn’t have to keep my finger on remote to change because of inappropriate content. What a shame!!
We need to have laughter in our lives and this show filled the bill. What a shame it was cancelled.
The Millers was another dud. Say good bye to the laugh track and actors acting like 8 year olds. This show bombed because it was a disaster and
this was my favorite comedy of 2 seasons. I did not know it had been canceled. I watched it every night no matter what night it was on.
My husband and I loved this show. Can’t believe it was cancelled. Who are you catering to. It was very funny. Two Broke Girls is still on and this show isn’t, can’t figure that out.
Thought the show should’ve been left in the time slot after The Big Bang theory! Really enjoyed it. Can’t understand how shows like Two and a Half Men could survive. Acting like juveniles in the school yard. insulting to women. Yuky Stuff!
It was one of the funnys show. I hope you bring it back, especially now with jack in it
We loved that show ,I hope you bring it back.it doesn’t matter what time or day
I really liked the Millers, should be moved back to original time slot please!
I Loved The Miller’s…..I Was Shocked To Hear This……
my god I’m shocked that a hilarious show like the Millers would be canceled, my wife and I looked forward to it every week. sure wish they could bring it back, we’ll cross our fingers and toes
Why did cbs cancel this show?? I loved it and all it’s characters. I personally thought it was very funny. Please bring it back. It’s better than the McCarthys.
I really liked the show. It was very funny.
