The FOX network issued a statement two weeks ago that, after months of speculation, The O.C. had been cancelled. Fans were understandably upset and many immediately began campaigns to hopefully persuade the CW network to pick up the series for a fifth season.
It seemed like a very real possibility because Warner Bros. co-owns both The O.C. and the CW network. Also, affiliates prefer at least 100 episodes of a series before they’ll purchase rights to run it in syndication. The O.C. will have only 92 episodes at the end of this season so it could make financial to continue producing the show for at least a few more episodes. Well, apparently that’s not the case.

Today is the CW’s turn to take the stage at the annual Television Critic’s Association (TCA) tour in Pasadena, CA. In discussing various topics, the CW’s President of Entertainment, Dawn Ostroff, addressed the possibility of the network picking up The O.C. for a fifth season. The answer is “no” — though she said that they had considered it. She said, “Obviously, it came up but we really didn’t think it made sense for us for several reasons. And we’re very excited about Josh’s new show.”
As we speculated earlier, it seems that O.C. creator Josh Schwartz’s new show played into the decision-making process. Schwartz is co-executive producing a pilot based on the very popular Gossip Girls books. Warner Bros. had previously made a deal with book publisher Alloy Entertainment to adapt the books for the small screen. Economically-speaking, it may have made more sense to pick up a new series rather than the fifth season of an existing one.
Any hope for The O.C.? Probably not. Unless the final episodes (the finale airs on February 22nd) attract incredible viewership numbers, it looks like the sun has set on the Newport Beach characters.
IM SO MAD, SAD, DEPRESED, I DONT EVEN KNOW WHAT I FEEL ANYMORE. I CANT BELEIVE CW ISNT BUYING THE OC. THE OC ROCKS! AND ITS REALLY SAD THAT THEY DIDNT KEEP ON WITH THE SEASONS. IM NOT WATCHING CW EVER AGAIN!

i agree, im never watching the cw again because of this. cancelling the oc is the stupidest thing ive ever heard.
bad choice you motherf**kers
I am in shock. The OC is a pop culture phenomenon that is going to get killed by a unproven show based on a book. Come on . Me and my fiance met because of the OC. I don’t even like tv except for thursdays nights i can sit for an hour with a grin on my face because i’m watching the greatest show on tv and now its gone. I think the CW is retarded and dropped the ball . The OC is an adult oriented show with a teen following I know a ton of adults who watch… Read more »
My husband and I LOVE The OC. We can’t believe it’s been cancelled. We were shocked to hear this last week and are really upset. We record it every week and look forward to watching the drama unfold together. It’s just the right amount of dry humor, drama, and excitement. I am also going to stop watching the “CW” network in protest. Why not just try a new time slot, why cancel it completely?
First of all, I love the O.C. and it helps me in my life a lot!! I have watched it for about 3 years and i have to say these 2 years have been the best!! I THINK JOSH SCHWARTZ IS MAKING A VERY BAD MISTAKE AND I WILL NEVER WATCH HIS SHOWS!! Also, to the CW you guys suck big time if you dont want to pick up this great show!!!!!!!!!!
i’ve watched the oc from day one i havent missed a show. matter afact i dont watch tv. the only reason i have one is to watch the oc. thanks fox now i have no reason to waste money on subscribing to cable tv. 🙂 more money for the cable internet. stupid network’s.
well I must say the OC is by far the best show to ever air on television. When I heard of its cancellation I was outraged, it was the most ridiculous thing I have heard all year, and the people respnsible are making a BIG mistake. I know a lot of people freaked over the death of Marissa, saying they won’t watch the show and blah blah blah. I cried like a baby when I watched the episode, and I have everytime I have seen the episode, and I think it was the saddest moment in TV history. but it… Read more »
I am hurt by this atrocity! I will never watch another series made by Josh Schwartz OR the CW again. Why not? Cause it’ll just get CANCELLED!!!!!!! YOU GUYS SUCK!
I am so sorry to see the OC cancelled. I wish they could have tried changing the airing day rather than canceling completely. I think what killed the ratings was going up against the other shows on thursday night rather than the show itself. Very sad. I am a loyal fan and watched every episode. I sure wish someone would change their mind to keep this show alive. There are a lot of shows out there that should be cancelled, but this wasnt one of them!
This is so unbelievably stupid of the CW, and I as well I am never watching another episode of anything on their network again. I know of soooo mnay ppl that cant wait until Thursday nights to watch The O.C…….and as far as the Marissa dying and now the show sucks and blah blah blah, I think its just getting good again, as do others, so CW YOU SUCK AT KNOWING WHAT PPL ACTUALLY LIKE AND LOOK FORWARD TO ENJOYING EVERY WEEK!
I will never watch anything on the CW ever agin because of this.
Thank god IT’S GONE now
Will miss the O.C. on Thurs-
day night’s @ 8:pm
