TV show description:
This single-camera comedy takes an inside look at a seemingly perfect family whose lives take an unexpected turn when surprising truths are revealed. Instead of ruining their family, the honesty triggers a new and messier chapter where everyone stops pretending to be perfect and actually starts being real.
Eileen (Martha Plimpton), the matriarch of the O’Neal household, is highly regarded in the community for her volunteer work and fundraising skills. Eighteen years ago, an unplanned pregnancy and a shotgun wedding made a young Eileen get her act together. After reinventing herself as the perfectly put-together Catholic mom, Eileen is a little reluctant to embrace this new era of honesty and openness in her family.
A cop with the Chicago Police Department, Pat O’Neal (Jay R. Ferguson) is a regular (though inept) guy who loves his city, the Bears, and his family. After eighteen years as Eileen’s compliant husband, their separation leaves him a little less than prepared to handle life on his own as a single guy. Now that he’s independent (though living in the family basement), Pat’s has to learn to make his own decisions for the first time in his life.
Eldest son Jimmy (Mathew Shively) seems to have it all. He’s the handsome, popular star of his high school wrestling team. Though he isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed, he sometimes shows surprising insight. Jimmy reveals his struggle to make his weight class has turned into an actual eating disorder. It becomes clear that all the pressure and expectations have really gotten to him.
The smart, likable, and funny middle child of the O’Neal family, Kenny (Noah Galvin) has always felt like a bit of a black sheep compared to his perfect siblings. His decision to come out of the closet spurs the chain reaction of secrets from the rest of his family to spill out as well. He’s always been his mother’s favorite but his announcement about his sexuality threatens their special relationship when it opposes her firmly held traditional beliefs.
Wise-beyond-her-years, Shannon (Bebe Wood) is the family’s youngest and brightest child but her moral compass could definitely use some recalibrating. She’s been raising money for poor children in Africa but is actually saving to buy herself a car.
As Pat’s brother’s ex-wife, Aunt Jodi’s (Mary Hollis Inboden) connection to the family is more about proximity than blood. In the midst of the fallout from the family’s secrets, this hairdresser remains loyal to the O’Neals, always happy to play the role of their number one fan and cheerleader.
Episode #29 — The Real Secrets
VP Murray is nervous to tell Pat about his plans to ask Eileen to marry him and is relieved to receive Pat’s blessing to do so. Meanwhile, Eileen and Kenny realize how far they’ve come when they help Allison deal with her close-minded parents. Shannon and Jimmy discover a pregnancy test and prepare for life with another sibling.
First aired: March 14, 2017.
What do you think? Do you like the The Real O’Neals TV show? Do you think it should have been cancelled or renewed for a third season?
Please renew, I look forward to watching every week. I just love the show and think the cast work really well together. I especially like where Kenny does the dancing and singing, he’s really talented. Great show, great writing.
Cancel – what a boar. How can anyone watch this for more than 30 seconds?? Really bad writing – nothing original.
Please renew. Excellent , funny and very well written show.
I love The Real ONeals it’s a upbeat, happy show. I think we need a show like this to bring this topic the the table. Please, please renew!
I really like this show. It’s clever, witty and extremely entertaining. The cast is perfect. The Real O’Neals should be a full season!!! Please renew.
Please renew. We enjoy the way the characters evolve slowly and without drastic changes. Engrossing episodes. Comedy is often very wry and worth a smile if not always a laugh.
Please,Please renew for another season. the show is absolutely funny and needs to be on for several more years.
I love this show! So much more intelligently written, witty, and entertaining than most sitcoms. It’s must-see tv every week for me.Please keep it on the air!
It’s sad that there are so many talented, funny screenwriters trying to get a TV break, and they can’t because shows like The Real O’Neals is on instead.
This show has had some rocky moments off the air but I like how it tries to address it within the show, acknowledging issues and trying to do better. For me, a show that listens to feedback is very important. It’s a first of its kind and needs to continue. I also love how it makes fun of itself like the episode where they bring up that not everything is about Kenny being gay. They managed to make us feel really invested in the characters pretty much off the bat and it’s cheeky humor and clean fun brings back fond… Read more »
This show needs to be renewed!!! It is not the usual cookie-cutter program that many other series seem to follow and it’s writing doesn’t appear to be afraid to discuss what some people still consider “uncomfortable subjects”. Coming from a traditional Catholic-Italian family, I can completely relate to the situation Kenny faces with his mom and siblings. I may be just one person, but it would be a shame to lose the opportunity of watching such a great program. Please consider extending the series. Thank you!
One of the funniest shows I’ve seen in a long time. Crazy but warm and loving family. Would probably be better in a different time slot as it’s the only 1/2 hour show when all the other networks have an hour show beginning at 9. Tough to be against This is Us. Please renew!
IN CASE MY COMMENT YESTERDAY DID NOT GO THRU, (SINCE I HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE CODE) I NOW REPEAT: PLEASE DO NOT CANCEL THE REAL O’NEALS. IT IS A CLOSE LOOK AT A WARM FAMILY THAT IS NOT BASED ON SCANDALOUS SEXUAL ESCAPADES OR CRIMINAL ACTIVITY. IT IS SO HUMOROUS AND FRESH THAT ITS CANCELLATION WOULD BE A SERIOUS TO FINE TV PROGRAMMING.
My whole family LOVES this show. Renew, renew, renew!!!!
This show is just too damned funny. It’s got to be renewed.
