The search is truly over for the Magus crew. ABC has cancelled The River, their mid-season thriller series, after just one season of eight episodes.
The River follows the search for Emmet Cole (Bruce Greenwood), an adventurer, TV host, father and husband who disappeared while on an expedition deep in the uncharted waters of the Amazon River. Others in the cast include Joe Anderson, Leslie Hope, Eloise Mumford, Paul Blackthorne, Thomas Kretschmann, Daniel Zacapa, Shaun Parkes, and Paulina Gaitan.
The TV series had an okay premiere, registering a 2.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 8.35 million viewers. Unfortunately later episodes didn’t do nearly as well and towards the end of its short season it went as low as a 1.3 in the demo with 4.09 million.

On our ABC Ratings Report Card, which measures the relative success of shows on the network, The River has a “D” grade and is one of the lowest-rated shows on ABC this season. It’s no surprise that the network has cancelled it.
While you won’t see a second season ABC, there’s still a glimmer of hope that Netflix could pick it up. The movie rental/streaming service had preliminary discussions with ABC Studios about possibly picking up the show if ABC ended up canning it.
There’s been no word since the initial story but, now that the show’s been cancelled, perhaps we will. ABC holds their upfront presentation on Tuesday so we may learn some more information at that time.

I hope Netflix makes season 2 and so on. I loved the show. My whole family watched it.
Netflix would do a fantastic reboot of the river. They should absolutely pick it up.

I did enjoy this series. Although, it is a rip-off of the movie ‘The Fog’, even down to the crew being trapped.
Another series would be most welcome with a slightly different plot.
I loved this series, when I eventually came across it on Sky Box Sets. I don’t ever remember it being advertised on TV (though I rarely watch the ads if I can help it), so maybe that was why it didn’t do so well or maybe people got it mixed up with ‘River’ which I think was out at about the same time and ended up recording the wrong series. Anyway, I think Netflix would do well to pick it up as, let’s face it, we really need to know what happened at the end of the last episode, right?!!
Please make Season 2 of the River!! I don’t understand why people don’t watch the best series and they get cancelled! The river is one of the best thriller series of all times!

Just saw the river on netflix and loved it!!!! And am so sad there isn’t a season 2, if there is a petition out there to sign, to somehow bring back this awesome show, i wanna sign it!!! Please please please please please bring it back, i have to know what happens!!!!
This show was premiered in Singapore few years back which I unfortunately have missed a couple of episodes that I have now caught up with, an agonizing impact and so much of a disappointment on Season 2 of The River being cancelled on ABC! Therefore, with all the comments here by the fans that have enjoyed Season 1, I truly hope Netflix could bring up another wonderfully thrilling season of The River!
