There’s another casualty on network TV. CBS’ military drama, The Unit, has been cancelled after four seasons on the air.
The Unit revolves around an elite military unit and their civilian loved ones. The series features the talents of Dennis Haysbert, Regina Taylor, Audrey Marie Anderson, Robert Patrick, Max Martini, Abby Brammell, Michael Irby, Scott Foley, Demore Barnes, Alyssa Shafer, Danielle Hanratty, Kavita Patil, and Rebecca Pidgeon.
Created by acclaimed director and writer David Mamet, the series debuted in mid-season 2006. An average audience of 15.5 million viewers ensured a second season for the drama but year two didn’t go as well, attracting 11.1 million viewers. The show has continued to decline in the ensuing years and season four has averaged an audience of 9.67 million. Though the overall viewership isn’t too low, the series does skew older. The average age of The Unit’s viewership is about 55.
The series has been “on the bubble” for awhile and many took it as a bad sign when showrunner Shawn Ryan signed on to helm FOX’s Lie to Me. Ryan however maintained that he would continue on both shows if The Unit was renewed. He’d previously performed double duty while working concurrently on The Unit and The Shield.

Like most of the networks’ actions these days, the decision to renew or cancel came down to finances. CBS had asked for all of its shows to reduce their budgets. The Unit is actually already cheaper to produce than it looks. Shot primarily in Southern California, it costs less than $3 million per episode to produce. That’s about half as expensive as other primetime dramas.
A couple weeks ago, Haysbert told the LA Times that he was unsure if he wanted the show to come back if it meant making too many creative and salary concessions. He said, “There are a number of factors that go into whether I want it back or not. It’s been a great ride and, if I don’t work with these people again, I’ll certainly play golf with them.”
In an age when the networks and studios have to watch every dollar, they’ve all been favoring renewing shows that are created by sister or in-house production companies. Since 20th Century Fox TV produces the show, the network wouldn’t benefit if the show went into syndication.
Prior to the cancellation news, Gary Newman, chairman of The Unit’s studio, said, “For the CBS viewer, this show is unique. The audience may not be huge, but there’s going to be enormous disappointment if it goes off and it’s replaced with one more procedural or forensics show.”

I am absolutely and totally bummed!! My husbandand I LOVE THe UNIT!! We are the the 35-40 age bracket and this was the only show we were INSTANTLY hooked on!!
It was the only show that we taped ABOVE any other show. To say I am terribely dispappointed is an understatement. The 4th season was the best yet!! I would LOVE to see it back!!
and i am in my thirties!!!
i am so pissed they cancelled The Unit!!!!!!! I never missed an episode!!!!!
CBS totally messed this up; best show on TV. Sunday at 10pm and still almost 10 million viewers. I may remove CBS from my guide and never watch them again. They should sell the rights to a real channel.
CBS and whoever had the decision in cancelling the Unit are fools. My husband and I, 28 and 33, have faithfully watched this show since it has come on and are so appalled that CBS would cancel it and keep shows such as Numb3rs. What a waste…
Are you kidding me. I so looked forward to every Sunday . This is a bad decision bring it back please.
I absolutely cannot believe that The Unit has been cancelled! Great show, suicidal time slot. I don’t know how many times I set a timer to record it only to find that I only had half of it because the last half of Cold Case cut into the show. I married a soldier in April 2009. He had never seen the show and was instantly hooked. Now I have to tell him it’s been cancelled? Shame on you CBS….shame on you.
I couldn’t wait for The Unit to come on every Sunday night. I’m 34yrs. old and even hooked my wife on the show. We have bought each other the seasons for our birthdays. Somebody pick it up!!
Why would the unit be cancelled? It was one of if not the best show on tv. This is a bad decision.
I am SO disappointed!! Cancel another program -BRING BACK THE UNIT!!!! We are in the 30 are bracket and love the show!!!! CBS had made a huge mistake!! Their ratings will pay in the fall!!! Bring it back!!!!!
As a military professional myself, I loved everything about this show!!! Its a show I got into late and now that I’m almost caught up on the season’s, it gets the axe… sad, sad…. now that it’s off the I guess I’ll have to give up on network tv and stick to ESPN, Comedy Central and HBO… Sorry CBS, you cut something really great this time…
The Unit CBS attracks age bracket 55 and over…..Hmmm Baby Boomers…..More Baby Boomers than any other age bracket and they cancel the show…Just goes to show that anyone can be anything they want to be even if they are StuuuuuuPid… So what they gonna replace it with How about reruns of Dancing with the Stars….or maybe Gidget reruns….Happy Days…? what a bunch of iddiots a really great show and some iddiot probably the owners son cancels the show….My head itches

why would you leave us hanging? at least have one last season to close all the loose ends you left us with, who ever decided to cancel this show now needs to go to a diffrent network one i dont watch!
Well, they have done it again! Shot themselves in the foot. Had a great show.. shoved it off to a late Sunday night time slot.. guess what if you really want to kill something, you can kill it….does not take a crystal ball to figure that out.. I watched every one of these shows, and thought they were all great.. I hope someone else picks it up and it goes against one of CBS big shows and cuts its throat.. thats what CBS deserves… and some of those dope headed upper echelon morons deserve to be fired and never be… Read more »
