Court will soon be adjourned for ABC’s new legal drama. The Whole Truth has been cancelled.
Airing on Wednesday nights, The Whole Truth stars TV veterans Rob Morrow and Maura Tierney. He plays a powerful defense attorney who was raised on the wrong side of the tracks. Tierney is on the opposite side as a Senior Trial Assistant District Attorney whose father was a sheriff. Viewers are shown how each side builds their case, using their own version of “the truth.” The rest of the cast includes Eamonn Walker, Sean Wing, Anthony Ruivivar, and Christine Adams.
For whatever reason, most viewers haven’t been willing to even give the series a try. The legal drama got off to a very poor start right out of the gate. Whole Truth debuted on September 22th to a poor 1. 5 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 4.85 million viewers. The news got even worse in week two and the rating dropped by 20%. The last two episodes seem to have evened off, registering a 1.3 rating and about 4.4 million total viewers.
The Whole Truth’s been ABC’s lowest rated show, attracting an even lower rating than My Generation; another freshman drama that was pulled after just two episodes. Likely because of the caliber of the show’s cast and because it’s being co-produced by Jerry Bruckheimer’s company, ABC has been more patient with it. That doesn’t mean however that they’re going to order any more episodes. ABC has now cancelled The Whole Truth.
Via Twitter, co-executive producer KristieAnne Reed confirmed that the cast and crew will complete the initial 13 episode order but that will be the end. At this point, it’s unclear how many of those will actually air.
Whole Truth remains on the schedule this week but will be preempted next week for the In the Spotlight with Robin Roberts: All Access Nashville interview special. On November 10th, ABC airs the Country Music Awards. Whole Truth is tentatively scheduled to return after that but those plans could certainly change.
Though Whole Truth has been cancelled, there is some positive news for fans of the show. With the news of the cancellation coming this far in advance, producers have time to give the series some closure. The cast and crew are still shooting and are scheduled to continue until mid-December.
What do you think? Should The Whole Truth have been cancelled? Why do you think it didn’t catch on?

What a bummer. my favorite show of the season cancelled. What a loss. It was such an intelligent, thoughtful and informative show with excellent acting that it defies belief that it was cancelled. It deserves another chance.
An amazing show. There is nothing else like it.
It is so ‘fast’, very intelligent and I am glued to the screen waiting for the ending.
Please give it another chance.
This is shocking! This was the best show on tv. This is so unlike every other lawyer show.
This is the one show that I really looked forward to watching every week.
My daughter and I loved this show. Looked forward to it every week. I am so tired of getting addicted to a show and them pulling it off the air!! First Flash Forward then Happy Town and now this!!!!! Makes me really angry!
Stink – loved the show and cannot believe it’s cancelled. So sick of phony “reality” shows and this one actually had some substance, fun, chemistry between the leads, and a twist at the end of every episode. I’ll really miss it – stink.
Like so many others we were EXTREMELY disappointed by this premature cancellation – Please give us a chance to view and pass the word about our favorite new shows – This and Outlaw were such a wonderful treat – Finally shows to look forward to instead of the “Vast Wasteland” With these cancellations hope diminishes even more that there will EVER be consistent new offerings – what it the point in getting these hopes up – you can be sure that if it’s GOOD, it’ll be canceled in a minute – I so wish they’d have the brains to reconsider,… Read more »
Surprised it was cancelled. Maybe they are surveying the wrong people. I think it’s well done and and a very good show.
Loved this show – ABC, you are wrong. Give it a chance.
Great show! ABC should give it a chance.
Great cast and story line!
The show is good and the actors really pulls the stories together.
The one problem I found with it…. I could not get is… why every defendant is guilty. It means once they went to trial, you know the outcome of the story.
Thats why Matlock was simply a great legal drama, and why The Defenders is beating it in the time slot. You never know what the jury will decide.
I can’t believe this show is being canceled. It was extremely a well written show and the actors were incredible. Another network needs to pick it up and give it chance. Some shows take longer to catch on but these days the networks do not give them time to develope a following. Shame on you ABC for taking it off the air too soon!
This show was one of the best dramas on TV.
Darn ABC. This is s great show!!
This was an original intelligent program that I LOVED from the beginning. I thought it was the best new show of the entire Fall season. And I can’t believe that the powers-to-be couldn’t see that! I really, really hope that this show continues on in some other way because I really thought it was terrific. I don’t usually love shows about lawyers but this one was different and I looked forward to seeing it every Wednesday. Can’t believe the junk that is still on TV while The Whole Truth gets canned.
Loved the show and am very surprised to hear it is canceled. Thought the cast was great and story lines were great as well. Too bad!
