Fans of NBC’s Trauma series have had a season of ups and downs. The TV show got off to a poor start in the ratings and then was essentially cancelled when NBC decided not to purchase any episodes beyond the initial 13 installments. Later, because the peacock network needed additional original programming, they kept it in production and ordered an additional seven episodes.
Unfortunately, the show’s ratings got worse and worse and NBC later cut the final episode order to 18 installments. Last night’s was the last. Looking at the ratings, it’s hard to imagine that NBC would consider ordering another season of Trauma.
Still, one of the show’s star’s, Cliff Curtis (Rabbit), remains hopeful that Trauma will be back for year two and refused to let the show’s prospects influence his work. He recently spoke to USAWeekend and here’s a portion of that conversation…
Have you got any word on if Trauma will get a second season?
We’re still in the mix despite all reports of being cancelled. I’m still contracted till May 17, which will be the day I find out what I’m doing. They haven’t cut me loose to go and take first position on any other projects. We’re all watching.Would your first choice be to have another year of Rabbit?
I love Rabbit as a character, he’s fantastic. We can get better – we’ve come a long way and we started off with a very broad concept: Basically taking a female-skewed audience of a genre show, a medical show, and skewing it toward the male audience. The pendulum swang a little too far in that direction, we’re pulling it back the other way, and we’re getting really good. That must have been pretty disheartening to hear the rumors in the fall of Trauma being cancelled and left for dead.
I skipped over all of that because I didn’t want to focus on it. That is not going to help me enjoy my work and is not going to help enjoy my life. Rabbit as a character is somebody who despite all of his flaws and all the tragedy happening around him, he’s just a fun guy in a lot of ways. He’s not the brightest guy at times – he’s got room to grow in terms of how he approaches life, and that’s what keeps me interested in him as an actor. But I just really love his enthusiasm for life. I really admire people who are clear about what they love, and they just go for it. That’s really helped me as an actor to think, “You know, I’m gonna approach it with the same attitude.” People can say what they say. I’m loving my job, loving my work, love the people around me, and I’m going to come to work every day and have the best time I can.
What do you think? Do you think Trauma has a chance at returning? If it is cancelled, would you like to see Curtis (or even “Rabbit”) to land on another series?

I am so sad Trauma is canceled. I don’t watch alot of TV but looked forward to this one. It was a great show!!!!! I gave up 24 to watch Trauma. It would do better on a different night I’m sure.
I think NBC needs to put Trauma back on the air. It was a spectacular show and the cast worked together wonderfully. This is a show that both my husband and myself looked forward to on Monday nights. STOP with the dumb reality shows and put back some more drama and real life shows that we can all get into and forget about our lives for an hour. KEEP TRAUMA ON NBC. WISE UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I share the sentiments of just about everyone on this blog. Trauma was a “close to real life” show as I have seen come on TV in a very long time. I don’t watch much TV at all, but Trauma was one of the few I looked forward to watching. I am very dishearted toward NBC’s decision to cancel. I believe they are making a huge mistake in their judgment and I am still hopeful that they will reconsider.
this is messed up! if nbc did there job, the ratings would be through the roof. well should all email them our thoughts and save a show that is worth watching! save trauma bring it back!
I completely agree with Barbara W’s comment above.
Well, they have done it again, to another great show. The Unit, Trauma, Third Watch, Saving Grace, etc.,etc. Why do we have to have a multitude of stupid, not good shows while all the really adult, well acted ones plunge and die? Television anymore seems to do best for the sophomoric, non-thnking people than those of us who appreciate good acting and good scripts. Too bad, but there it is. What are the TV execs. thinking???
Amen to Barbara W’s comment! I couldn’t have said it better. The real question is this: Is NBC deliberately introducing these great new shows JUST SO IT CAN CANCEL THEM BEFORE THE END OF THE SEASON? In addition to that, where were all of us when they were calculating the ratings? It is obvious that there are a lot of people who avidly prefer shows that have some serious drama to offer. Perhaps the ratings should be sent to a larger, or better DIFFERENT, segment of TV viewers. Even that, however, might not work since so many people who appreciate… Read more »
Just when they put a show on worth watching they pull the rug out from underneath us!! I really looked forward to watching Trauma on Monday night’s.. It reminded me of an updated version of Emergency.. I really hope that NBC reconsiders and brings this great show back.. More Rabbitt!!
Well and truly gutted. Seriously hooked on this show. Just found out it got axed… Heartbreaking 🙁
Love the show. The problem as I see it is that it got bounced around so much that it was hard to keep track of. It seems to me that any show that gets as good reviews as I have read on the website, should be renewed and run in a regular time slot.Kudos to the minds that thought up the concept and thumbs down to the management that can’t stand success. Joe
best show ever that wasnt reality tv… an yet it gets cancelled? but you keep shows like mercy not half as good as trauma,, or you keep chuck..
how can you cancel when you finally got a show that was worth watching
Love Trauma and would like to see it come back. Needs to be advertised more so people will know when it is on.
This is one of my favorite series. The chemistry among the characters is great. I agree, the networks are doing a very poor job of advertising shows. It would be helpful to inform the public of the premise of each show even after the series has begun.
Trauma is a great show and i believe it show stay on its different and needs more advertising . NBC fail to give it another chance to move on if its cancelled.
WHY WAS TRAUMA NOT ADVERTISED??? Great show and cast NBC you failed in regards to advertising trauma. Very few people even knew the show returned after the Olympics. So sad.
